Memory has gotten cheap

If you're inclined to upgrade your computer's memory or storage, then now is a good time to do so.  Without looking very hard, you can find 64 GB of 3600 MHz DDR4 memory on New Egg for $110, or a 4 TB PCI Express 3.0 x4 SSD for $200.  Smaller capacities are much cheaper, as you'd expect.

Hynix is bleeding money as a result.  They just reported that they lost nearly $2 billion in the quarter completed on revenue of less than $4 billion.  (They reported numbers in Korean Won, of course, but I've converted it for you.)  For the most recently completed quarter, Micron's financial statements were even worse, losing more than $2.3 billion on revenue of less than $3.7 billion.

That sort of losses leads memory fabs to make dramatic changes to shore up the prices.  If it lasts long enough, it can also lead to bankruptcy.  The last extended period of cheap memory drove Elpida out of business, reducing the number of major DRAM manufacturers from four to three.

Samsung 980 Pro 2TB NVME drive is $158 right now (Amazon US). That's $30 cheaper than I paid for it on sale during holiday sales last winter. I've been very happy with it.

Queue up timely natural disaster that shutters one of the 4 plants world-wide that make this stuff, sending the price to the moon.

I bought computer hardware for Motorola in 1980. 1/2 of a megabyte was $5,000.

    My home PC now has 32Gb, so that's 64,000 X 5,000 = $320 MILLION in 1980 dollars.

If only we could get some modern budget video cards in the 150-180 range that don't suck terribly. The 6600 is getting close, maybe it will get there.

“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

It is a shame old PC's don't go up in value, but those are the breaks.

Yes, it is a phenomenal time to buy some RAM, I agree. 64GB DDR4 3600MHz for like 150$? What a steal!
