I don't play this game but I just wanted to say that's really impressive that they invested enough into the gameplay design of fishing (of all things) to warrant a 300 page guide for it. Even though I personally don't enjoy fishing I think it's really cool that they went that for in depth for those that do.
I think the devs need to rethink how fish is used in game; because right now it is worthless/meaningless. I am still leveling it doing the ocean fishing event. That is the only thing I suggest doing if you want to get into it. Before, to level fishing, I made it a goal to fill up the log in every area. That is how I dealt with the boredom and the useless fish. I did this up to level 70.
If I had to change something, if anything, is how fish is used in cooking. The fish not used in cooking should be used in alchemy, or producing fish oil, or some other item that is useful. Fish should have a good price being sold to fish specific NPC's. I think such changes would help.
I remember how bad fishing was in FFXI. Even a friend of mine would quit not long after he started lol. But then they changed it to a mini game where you have to keep the indicator in the center. Fishing was worth doing, even at low levels, because you can convert them to crystals which was worth money. In FFXIV they get converted to sand...

Isn't that basically most tradeskills in FFXIV though? You don't make any money leveling up the tradeskills at all hardly, it's crafting specific things in endgame that makes money.

As someone who loved oceanside fishing as a kid, it's probably the most realistic experience in FFXIV, in that regard.
