Between Palworld, Helldivers 2, and now Manor Lords, it's been a year of games coming out of left field and achieving runaway success.

    Palworld had a peak of 2,100,000 three months ago with a 24 hour peak today of 50,000.

    While 50K is a good number it still represents a 97% drop in the population in about 90 days.

    Hyping people into your game is easy.
    Putting out a product where they want to stay is something else entirely.

    The Manor Lord number means nothing to me.
    I'll see where we're at in 3 months.

    Hopefully, its even higher.

    Well the risk now is that this solo developer pockets his millions and sails into the sunset. Granted the steam page says "started by" a solo developer, and from the polish I'd say there's no way this is a one man show. Professional music composer, artist, animator, game designer and coder all in the same person and didn't take 20 years to put this all together? Seems unlikely to say the least. Point being he's probably got payroll to make, and the millions coming in are offset by millions going out.

    Looks cool. Too bad I suck at RTS.

    It seems every game being released, is Early Access. What happened to releasing finished games?

    I wonder how the Japanese were able to do it. They release a new game, with a new concept, and it's a hit. Perhaps they understand their own culture better than we do ours? Or is it that they actually did some research first? Also they had software engineers, writing code in ASM, to make their games; yet they managed to over come their difficulties without quiting. One game that comes to mind, when Sega was worth its salt, is Phantasy Star Online for the Dream Cast. It was a beta version, and they admitted it was difficult to make happen, yet they excelled. Today, hardly any studio can get multiplayer to even work properly.

    That's not a great indicator of success for a single player RTS game. You can easily get hundreds of hours of gameplay out of it within 90 days, which means you got your money's worth. If you move on from a SP game after 90 days that does not mean it was a failure.

    It still matters because it shows the game has legs and you want to play it for more than a month. But as you say the drop of in numbers is no where as near important as it would be for a multi player game. That said, the fact it is early access muddies the waters, are people dropping of because the game is not as good as they thought or because as an EA there is still much to be done? I would wager it is the latter, it seems to be a winner to me.

    I think quite a few people do that (swap games frequently); however, in my way of thinking if a game doesn't hold my attention for more than 90 days it was a bust.

    That’s subjective.

    There are people who won’t replay games once finished. Just like there are people who won’t rewatch movies, no matter how good.

    This game looks like a slam dunk for everything Kingdoms of Elyria was claiming to be.

    There are people who won’t replay games once finished. Just like there are people who won’t rewatch movies, no matter how good.
    And I am one of them, but the length of time I play still reflects on the game as long as the game is not too linear. So, if all the guys who play like me play a game more it is a better game and that will show in the Steam charts. The sort of game that won't apply to is not difficult to spot.

    It looks great and I'm tempted to install it, but I'm already buried in a few other games right now and it's PC only. The game play footage of building and battles is impressive.

    If it was on 3 million wishlists, how can you possibly say it came "from out of left field"? It was, in fact, highly anticipated, and any sane person would have bet that it would have a huge initial burst of sales.

    At one point, American McGee, the guy who created the "Alice" games, partnered with an Asian company (not sure if it was Japanese or Chinese") to make a game. He said that they were exceptionally fast at making realistic assets.

    So I'm guessing it's part of their culture/how they are trained.

    I'll add that if it was a Japanese company then they have a culture of working ALL THE TIME. So when you have people who are working to 11pm and it's "ok" then a lot of work is going to get done.

    I remember asking a former girlfriend who was Japanese if "I" lived in Japan but decided to not work late, to only work until 5, what would happen?

    Her answer was that unless it was a temp job or an entry level job it would be highly frowned upon and that I would be overlooked for promotion or not get a renewed contract.
