I think a healthy bit of grind can be beneficial to an MMO in the long term. The problem arises when you make it mandatory - like what happened with Torghast in WoW.

If you lean too hard on the "game respects your time" narrative, you usually end up with a product that lacks the sufficient reward structures that want you to log in.

I think Ion said it best in one of his WoW interviews. You still want to give players a reason to log into the game.

In contrast, FFXIV's Endwalker made everything so grind-free, there isn't a whole lot to do for non-raiders once you max every job. The MSQ updates comes once every 4~ months, and they can usually be done in 1-2 days.

Are these guys making a video game are writing essays? Because I'm not seeing a video game materialize.

These guys really need someone in the room to tell them to 'shut up and go make a video game' and 'please don't come back until it's created.'

Mark Jacobs also has a lot of blah blah blah and not much game to show for it. Maybe go make your game THEN talk about it. Until then it's just pie in the sky.

One thing I valued about World of Warcraft released, the 8 starting zones. You do not see this in many new games same race, same classes start and funnel out from the same starting area.

Reminds me of OG Everquest. You had all these racial cities and starter zones. Hell that was one of the first MMORPG's and it was doing it. Yet after WOW all that went bye bye. Multiple races, with racial flavors/skills/benefits/hindrance is a good thing that lazy ass (or penny pinching) devs and companies completely ignore nowadays and I hate it.

Vanguard had multiple races/racial and starting zone/cities. That game came out after Wow, 2007.
