Monsters & Memories Announces Next Playtest Window, Shares New Improvements and Progress Videos | MMORPG.com
The Monsters & Memories team has shared a new monthly update, announcing a window for their next playtests, and sharing new changes and progress videos.
I actually think the art is quite cool and it has a fun concept to it. However if there is one thing I wouldn't take from EverQuest, it's the horrible combat. One area that WoW really perfected from that style of MMO and really I'd prefer if someone took Classic EQ (pre Luclin) and put WoW's combat in it.
I don't understand why they would spend sooooo much time and resources to make a literal Everquest but from the ground up from scratch under there own IP when Everquest still exists and is played still with time locked servers.
What exactly does this game offer that Everquest doesn't?
This game has to be better than Everquest to succeed. If it's the same, then it won't last.
Either way, I hope it does well. This is my opinion. I just don't see a market for this type of MMO in the modern era. It won't make enough money to keep going and continue development unless the developers are doing it for non-monetary reasons.
Can't wait. As far as MMORPG's go this team is such a breath of fresh air for doing everything the old school way. Not begging for money to play their alphas. Fully funded and working to build the game instead of building hype for presales and founders packs. Allowing people in to test who apply and actually test. They've been rather transparent regarding their development and pricing models. Most importantly they know this will be a niche game that has a look and feel like the OG Everquest. Really like the dev team, really like what I've played so far since I've been in 2 tests. Make no mistake its an OLD OLD school alpha, but each play test you can tangibly see significant progress. So can't wait to jump back in again.

It's EQ, but a whole different setting, lore and places to explore. So even if it's AS good as EQ, it will still drae that audience as its a whole new place to see and experience. That answers your question.
Bah, i'm old, but seeing this attempt at recapturing nostalgia with a low poly unity game seems like a fool's errand. A lot of old game nostalgia isn't based on how old games were made, but on what our expectations back then were when we entered these fantasy worlds. We didn't know how they worked, so we enjoyed the content for what it was. Now that we know the treadmills, the grind, the wasted time, the unfair PK and the "endgame" hijinks, it's clear mmorpgs were built on broken foundations of singleplayer games and bad multiplayer additions most of the time. I think we need to rethink those foundations to make a game that gives people what they really want from a fantasy multiplayer world, but don't let me spoil your fun!

I think you are correct in that (and I don't call it nostalgia) people had no expectations when they first started playing these old games. They just logged in and had a blast.
I think for people "other than you" they still like the limited worlds, the slower combat, no story, the interaction with other players.
That's not nostalgia. That's preferring a different type of game. While I never played Everquest, I did play Lineage 2 and it's just a noticeable difference between that and any new game.
I love the better graphics/animations as well as better UI but the general thrust of these newer games are quests and story and bleh. Don't get me wrong, I like good story and good quests but in single player games. I much prefer a "world" where the players band together to take on adversity. Or each other.
One could say "go back to Lineage 2" or "go play Everquest" but the issue there is that Lineage 2 has changed a LOT and a LOT for the worst. I'm not sure I could catch up in a game like Everquest and would I run into the problem where one would have to play 8 hours per day to stay competitive?
So that's why these new "old" games are interesting.

A lot of the team played EverQuest, Ultima Online, and other oldschool MMOs and are familiar with the pitfalls that these original games experienced. EQ, especially, was designed around players needing to communicate and work together to move through the world and helped develop relationships that you don't see as much in modern MMOs (outside of the raid scene) - I think that's the goal.. not to make another raiding game, as there's plenty of those to choose from if that's your thing
*Also just to clarify, the team is not funded - it's being developed in free time, but is aiming to go early access at the end of next year if you're interested in supporting
