We are getting a bit political guys, I know that's hard not to in this case, but this is my last post here lest I start banging on myself!

At first, I was kind of hoping this was going to work as it would have been good to have a different setting and vibe for an MMO.  However, as soon as I saw that most of the people working on this were artists, writers and a few coding minions to throw it all together, I knew it was doomed.  There was a thimble full of MMO experience amongst everyone there combined.  Also, the casual racism coming from the studio didn't do it any favours, either.

It really is shocking how many startups treat coding as the least important part of game development.

I disagree. I'm looking upon this game cancellation from a purely financial point of view. To wit, it is unwise to alienate the very people who would have otherwise purchased supported and played your product.

Which in this case is an absolute shame as I think the game's setting would have been a wonderful breath of fresh air in an otherwise stagnant gaming genre.

I'm white, I wanted to play when the game was first announced. It was likely the first really fresh feeling MMO announced in awhile. It didn't take long for their racism to come out in full force thinking it would be a good move for them. Like it or not white people are a significant portion of money that gets spent on games especially in North America and Europe. They seemed to think it was no problem being bigoted towards that segment of the populace. So as every one of them hits the unemployment line I couldn't be happier that this racist turd of a game crumbled. Here's a hint for every single dev team thinking about making a game...try to not be racist against...ANYONE maybe?

I followed the game from day 1 on kickstarter and discord and never met any racism in there. The devs tthought it would be cool to make a queer game with strange looking chars without pronouns, think up for yourself who or what you are. Looked far from good, if you ask me. Queer people are just people. They play games like everyone else. Why should someone create a game for a minority on purpose? Not the brightest move.

The CEO was full in love with his ideas for an african themed fantasy D&D world. But he overstepped his competence by thinking a dozen people with some talent here or there would be enough to create a working MMO AND a pnp rule system along the way.

After the alphas (i backed myself in) we told them, what the game lacked to be fun or even be an MMO. In the alphas you have been lucky to see more than one or two other people ingame. Not promising... They ignored the feedback and continued to not deliver. The team grew, the game not so much. In the Discord there has been no talk at all for weeks. Every person could see how this would fail massively. Most people online was 24.. but only on EA release. They should have never released it and stick to their pnp vision.

Maybe they should follow what Desert Nomad does with A Tale in the Desert and create Tales which are a lot like a different version of a game season but with a longer run and restart. Then they can have a chance to make each run get better and use feedback from previous tales to enhance the next.

You're using the wrong word....It's not racism, You have to be in a minority class that has marginalized by a majority with a superiority complex for it be actual racism.  Discriminatory, prejudice? Poor execution of inclusion and trying to get more PoC interested in playing MMOs? More than likely.

I just don't think they thought their approach through since people are especially sensitive about this topic these days. Had it been in the 90s, early 2000s few would have paid any mind. Things have changed, and not for the better.

Quibbling over semantics isn't the greatest way to get people to see your point.

It's really weird to me that, in a time when dictionaries are perfectly happy to take a descriptive approach and scholars insist that definitions can change based on how people actually use a given word, those same people often insist that it's super incorrect or even ethically questionable to use certain hot-button words in a way they don't approve of.

I am trying to understand the posters' perspective here because to my knowledge they did ask whether you are PoC in the beta form and they said they were going to enforce RP but that's all I caught that could fit that context.
So, they don't see the minefield that is a white person roleplaying a minority?
I can already hear the screams of digital blackface.

    No.
Racism defined: Racism Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster

I appreciate that people in a minority group that hate people in a majority group use the term as you've defined it here to avoid smearing themselves with the poo they're throwing, and I can accept that new definition.

If we're changing the definition, we'll need a new word for people who hate/discriminate based on ethnicity.  I'm good with 'hater' or 'asshole'.

Only people that bothered to check out the game would have possibly experienced any sort of racism, prejudice, etc... that was not the issue WHY it failed. It could be one reason but its small.

I play games with two guilds, one with thousands of members, the other with hardcore MMO gamers. There has been no mention of this game, no trials, no betas, no check this out posts. Heck, there have not even been any this game sucks posts because nobody cares what it is, that it even existed, and with such a small niche MMO circle (and apparently lofting success expectations of the devs), it had no chance from the start. Its just another game on the trash heap of MMO failure.

Out of curiosity, can one of the posters quote the devs (link, quote, whatever) what they found to be combative? Just the quote/link, no need to take a position and get political.

Personally I found this announcement to be very distasteful:

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/wagadu/the-wagadu-chronicles/posts/2963174?lang=de

    https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1TRF_CdqckqgXwMWxOmFVHJzgzRzNVNOIO5xUso4-ny4/closedform?pli=1

" we are offering 50 “Kickstarter Exclusive” pledge tier for free to Blacks or PoCs who can’t afford it."

Look, at the end of the day they were a private company and I truly believe that a private company can do whatever they want when it comes to stuff like this, but I honestly found it despicable to try and segregate potential players based on skin pigmentation.  Also, a Kickstarter is probably NOT the best time to be telling people you are giving stuff away for free to ANY group while trying to fundraise to have enough budget to even make the game in the first place.

That said, while I thought it distasteful, I was still willing to give it a look in the Beta until they once again were focused on asking what my skin pigmentation was as a criteria for selection.  I said my peace on that when it happened.

At the end of the day I want to escape into a fantasy world for fun.  I don't want to drag stupid human ignorance and prejudice into it any more than we have to.
