Dauntless Dev Phoenix Labs Has Laid Off Over 100 People Amid A Restructuring | MMORPG.com
Phoenix Labs, the developers behind Dauntless and Fae Farm, have laid off over 100 staff today as the team shifts its focus to its live service titles.
What a bloodbath this industry has turned into. I'm making a game now with a friend or two. We never expect it to go big or hire on shit tons of people. We want to remain small and do it for fun for ourselves. Honestly the best games being made right now, for the most part, are coming from smaller independent passion projects. A solo person or small groups like Vampire Survivors or Manor Lords or Death Must Die are perfect examples. People trying to work for large studios/AAA studios have an utterly horrific job life expectancy. More people than ever are in the gaming industry but the products being turned out have never been more terrible or egregiously monetized. With so many more people in the industry, you'd think the talent for studios to employ would be overflowing. Sadly it seems most of them either aren't listened to, or are fired the second viral hits aren't scored by game releases. Sad state of affairs all around.
It's not just the gaming industry, even wal mart laid off employees citing bullshit reasons. When they say "restructuring" it's another word for "We need to look good on our next quarterly investor statement" (Yes that's a word in the dictionary). Every industry is being effected. Ai is leading the charge in job destruction. Companies just want to save money or make more of it. They don't actually care about hit games as long as it is profitable. Developers from indie studios actually care, like No Man's Sky. The game was a far cry from the promised land on launch, but they released expansion after expansion after another because they care about the vision of their game, their reputation, and the happiness of their players. Years later theior game is synonymous with the come back kid. A AAA corporate greedo company would have abandoned the game shortly after release but not until after they forced them to release early in the first place.

I think that since the noughties gaming has avoided the "too many games" issue by expanding the market games are sold too. So no matter how many of us were getting jaded and burnt out there were always more new players coming in. This is why mobile was I think less affected by the downturn compared to PC and console as that market has more legs, though still it is having a downturn.
