I would not say this is a scam... but the developers have definitely no experience in marketing and publishing a product and the game is a very early pre alpha version, definitely not an early access. You can try for free if you pop up on their discord but do not recommend spending a pence on it yet.

I'm using scam as a hyperbole term. But I just don't know what else to say. Between the over-abundance of AI art on their website, the obvious crappy use of bought assets, the absolutely abysmal screenshots with basically the bare minimum (IE non-existent world design, shit just thrown together without rhyme or reason, the most "generic" looking "fantasy" world ever). It's grotesque. Let it die on the vine immediately.

I don't see what using AI art is a bad thing. If someone likes the style and they created a model, why not use it. I don't think art is better just because a hand made it. I'm not saying theirs is good or bad, I'm just talking about the idea of AI art.

It is taking jobs from actual artists. It is stealing art from actual artists.

Possibly, but small developers might not be able to hire a team of artists.  This would be a cost effective way to get quality images.

AI is going to be hugely disruptive and end a lot of careers in the gaming industry. Artist, musicians, and writers are already on the chopping block. I could link you several websites that will generate AI music for you that's royalty free. You have to pay for the service, of course. It's not super expensive, though. I have no doubt game studios use it for sound tracks already. Level designers, and even developers will be next. 10 years from now there will be very few actual jobs left in building software other than small teams of AI shepherd who give the AI instructions and then curate the output. Iterate until it's what is desired. I'm just thankful that I should be retired by then. Well... I guess I'll be retired one way or another. The hope is I'll have enough money for a decent lifestyle in retirement as opposed to having to go move into a homeless shelter.

This is absolutely a scam and should not be promoted on this site. You can go to the web site and download a free version, but the one everyone will see on Steam is $25, go figure. If you try out the free version, there is literally nothing implemented. Walls do not even have collision. This isn't even a pre-pre-pre-pre-alpha. It's literally what someone threw together in an afternoon with an Unreal engine template.

Please do some research before promoting this BS on this site. It started out as a NFT crypto scam that fell apart and then was rebranded into this "MMO" that has been lurking around for a few years now preying on anyone dumb or desperate enough to throw even more money to the dude running it. He lies constantly in the discord, the launcher itself hasn't even worked since he started selling it AGAIN (yes, again, this game has been on sell for $25 for the past year) and his excuse for nothing working is that he's busy working in person with Amazon Games engineers.. lol.

This isn't even a case of just 1 guy making a sh*tty indie mmo, this is a case of someone legit trying to desperately get any money they can as a side hustle. Do not promo this game and take this BS down.

Read the Steam reviews, every single one calls it out as a scam.  Also, apparently MoP did some homework and found out this games roots.

"It looks as if our suspicions were on target: MMORPG community member Protobear pointed out to us that Abyss appears to be the same game as Metagates, an NFT/crypto game that popped up seeking promotion on the MMORPG subreddit back in June, complete with a roadmap. It’s apparently changed course since then.

Metagates is an MMORPG featuring a classless, dynamic combat system."

It'd be satisfying to watch these scammers gets busted and jailed. An example needs to be made of those who commit fraud; so no one else will attempt it. That is just how I feel about it. But this shit keeps happening, because there's a sucker born every minute. And their legal document you sign, before you play, protects them from lawsuits.

To be clear, I'm not making the argument because I care about the use of AI art itself, that said, it does speak to the quality of the product when it's so blatantly obvious that it's AI art. It's low quality, and low effort. Besides that, if they can't be bothered to pay for a single artist for a single piece of art, even for the damn front show piece for their game, I have zero faith in them as developers to hire or even have the ability to hire competent people to make a game.

I wouldn't give these people a dime. Not a single thing they're doing speaks to quality, it's shortcut after shortcut. Go and buy a single player or co-op game for the same price. Because this one looks like damn junk, and let's get real. It's never going to get better. What you see is what you're going to get. What you get is garbage.

And just like that Abyss Online has exited Early Access.

“We warn all to not purchase our game until these game breaking bugs are behind us.” If your eyes are bugging out reading that memo from the developers of the brand-new early access MMO Abyss Online, then push them back in because Old World Labs is quite serious."

My wife writes freelance articles online and many clients now ask that before sending articles that she has to put them through an AI article checker, as the end clients often ask for that now, and it is becoming increasingly more difficult to write an article that actually passes the check.....

......sometimes she spends more time tweaking it so it passes than it actually took for her to write damned article
