Since we changed the subject to tanking, it is an interesting idea for using crowd control. Technically, "taunting" is a type of crow control. Though I understand what is meant in the post, such as slowing the enemy(s) or knocking them dizzy. The idea of the "taunt" tank is simple: keep the enemy from hitting any one else but you. Besides using magic of a type of mind control, how are you going to do that? Perhaps have more than 1 tank, and they can act like a wall keeping the enemy(s) from even getting near the rest of the group. I think it's just how you envision and design it.

Tanks already do have crowd control with shield attacks that stun or disorient. It just does not last as long as an Enchanter's charm. It is also limited by some races being unable to be stunned. There are many ways tanks hold aggro as the term used to be in Everquest. It's not just taunt. Paladins in Everquest got root if I am not mistaken. There are tanks like the Pally in WoW that uses consecration which does damage and the Shadowknight in Everquest could steal HP making the mobs get mad at them. You can use gadgets like bombs or dynamite to gain aggro.

You are just looking at taunt like it was the only thing in a tank's bag of tricks. I think many game developers were using a formulae to build their classes but many games like City of Heroes or Anarchy Online broke away from that path. It's just that even when you play City of Heroes you keep seeing groups asking for tanks and healers in the group seeking chat. However City of Villains broke all those bad habits. The healing was pathetic and the Brute was more a hardier DPS class. We did however have the wonderful Mastermind that could get their pets to take the alpha strike.

However it was crucial for all the other classes to debuff and control and play smartly and not just tank and spank. It was a great time to play MMORPGs when City of Villains came out.
