At least with steam you can just change your address to a state with no sales tax and not have to pay it. Might be able to do that here as well.

Surprisingly the state I live in doesn't charge sales tax for digital goods like video games considering them intangible assets or personal property.

Yep been paying sales tax on digital purchases for years now. Death and taxes. Only thing that surprises me is they made it this long without collecting sales tax when so many other companies have done it for years. Guess they got caught in an audit.

The next step is to tax us on the "loot" we obtain in game since in many games that "loot" has a value via a cash shop.

I can verify that tax is charged in Georgia. I just resubbed to an MMO and tax was included.

Clearly a great VAT opportunity for countries which have such.

This is not surprising, but I find it strange they are now doing this. I've had to pay tax on other game subscriptions. In fact, I think I was paying taxes when I bought crysta, though I can't really remember if I did or not. So w/e.

Update: Buying Crysta does not add sales tax. But I had to pay tax from the Square Enix store, for the Dawntrail pre-order. Now if you're paying tax for Crysta, like through Steam; why the @!#!? are you playing this through Steam? I've read about its issues.
