Amazon is bringing New World to console through a revamped version of the MMO with New World: Aeternum. At Summer Game Fest Play Days, we were able to go hands-on with a build of the upcoming console port.

Does new world or the studio behind it have any investors? serious question because i am puzzled, why not just shut down the game if they don't owe anyone anything.
Why won't you just invest in fixing the pc issues that have been in the game ever since it's launch and actually make it you know.. good?
    Why the rush to console..
What's concerning to me is that these people are the ones making a new lotr mmo.

New world is a beta now for mechanics for the lotr game.....
I hope its a hit on consoles and they decide to have another expansion next year. If it is not...it will just fade away.

New World is AGS's tech demo for other developers that are considering using AWS for their online game hosting. It demos everything you would need to do from a technology standpoint to run a game. The game's lack of success is immaterial so long as it's still a useful marketing tool to get other developers on the AWS platform.

It's dead Jim, but not as we know it. Oh wait, it's exactly as we know it. Amazon should cut their losses. No one except them is going to use their garbage engine.

AGS moves in another direction with New World and all the players that are still playing are coming out of the woodwork expressing how much they hate the game. Kind of weird. They broke up with you all via text message. Get over it. You will find another game.

"However, this comes from the perspective of an MMO player who has seen what abrupt changes in starting zones sometimes herald. And that’s the beginning of the end, or the end of an MMO, as its loyal player base may know it."

Indeed, if you focus on console what else is going to happen down the line, it can only be to the net detriment of the MMO aspects.

And I think this is the whole reason they wanted to re-brand it. Many aspects of MMOs are either not wanted or difficult for console players. AGS wants it to appear to be more friendly to console players and to do that will require fundamental game changes. And as indicated that is usually at the expense of the MMO player.

Hardly. There are several MMOs on console including Black Desert, ESO, and FF14. They're very popular. There are even more multiplayer "mmo-alikes" that are hugely popular. Trying to put people in easily labeled boxes doesn't work and just makes your points look like fantasy fan fiction.

I think you are both right, this is an attempt to be console friendly and do a rebrand, but it has been presented poorly or presented in a way to obscure what is happening, I think both actually. Thats why as Valdemar points out there are loads of MMOs and MMO likes on console, what is the point of making it seem "console friendly", MMOs are console friendly? There has been a push to 'ARPG focus' from what this article says, but the reason for that is not to make the game console friendly, I believe this is a solo push to make the game more casual friendly.

What would be their motive for rebranding the genre of their game, if not to tone down appealing to their MMO base and advertising the MMO elements of the game?
Simply to create a new SKU they can sell both on PC and console for one, but to create a clean break from the New World of the past as well, to signal that this is a different game. Because aside from the content additions, the gameplay, UX, QOL stuff and more does make it look like a revamped version of New World.

Personally, I think they stuck in the old mentality that console players don't like MMOs with how they are marketing it as an ARPG - to me that feels insulting to console players and sets up bad expectations since this is, and will never cease to be, a very MMO-y game. But the rebrand is it signals a change in the overall package. This is no different than when ESO launched on console, the game was rebranded to Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited. The tagline signaled a change in the game, and this is what they carried through to the console release.

Who knows? I cannot fathom why they feel the need to rebrand. I'm not sure what or why AGS has done and said what they have over the life of this game. It's often quite puzzling. A lot of the time I think they're making up a lot of it as they go.

However, to try and paint it as console gamers are confused or find mmo aspects difficult is laughable. Console is almost an MMO in themselves because players are constantly connected and interacting with others. Multiplayer games dominate the console platform. MMO as a catchphrase is thrown around just as much on console as it is on the many PC game stores.

Everyone on my (admittedly small) Xbox friends list already owns New World on Steam, so I doubt they'll buy it again on console. I think a lot depends on the details and not so much the marketing spiel AGS is using.

The announcement was definitely poorly done, and information I saw on their site immediately afterwards is no longer present so obscurity is part of their strategy now.

This is likely due to the information being contrary to the everything will be much like it now narrative they are spinning, in terms of playing through the story at any rate.

What had been on the site were several named starting character types, each with a particular pair of weapons they were meant to play through the story with. That is quite different from the mix and match approach one can adopt now once past the introduction where you must use sword and shield.

It seems more change is in the works than they currently want to let on, likely getting cold feet with how poorly the initial announcement was received.

I do wonder about the management, I have since the mismanagement of server transfers. The woman who gave the interview in the last NW article did make me wonder what her background in gaming is?

The games biggest problem though is that they switched development horses mid race and I don't think the game has ever recovered from that. Now they have two games being looked after by the same team from what I can see, so that can but slow down anything they now do for the game. Anyway fingers crossed for the fans of the game.

You don't know what AWS is right?
Amazon Web Services is the most used cloud service in the world.

AWS is nearly a third of all cloud infrastructure.

So, you think it unlikely they'd use a tech demo to gain a bigger share?

New World is only demonstrating 2 things: how awful Lumberyard is as a graphics engine (but they at least tricked those idiots at CIG to buy it), and how much money they can throw away.

And the only thing AWS needs to do to gain a bigger share is exist.

Also, not allow Russia to hack into the USs National Nuclear Security Administration because of an easily fixable security hole that you knew about.

Was exactly my thought. They're using this live game to build the LOTR game. There is a lot to like about new world, and a lot not to like. But having a game live on pc and consoles, that uses the same engine and bells & whistles as the new big IP game you're making, brings in all kinda of useful data. So it's worth the loss New World is likely operating on currently.

Yeah I know exactly what it is. You know what an RFP is? You know what the quickest way to close a deal is? Have a fancy dog and pony show that checks all the boxes the prospective customer wants answered. If you've got a live game as a service hosted in your cloud where you can open the hood and show other developers how all the parts go together that will get heads nodding very quickly and get contracts signed.
