My Perfect MMORPG

1) Skill system instead of level system
I'm tired of the trend going around where all the games consist of you gaining levels. I'd like a game like Ultima Online, except better. More like SWG before NGE. Sorry, but I prefer games that rely more on your skill of playing than how long you've sat at your computer wasting hours away.

2) Housing and housing items UPFRONT
Communities in games that have housing seem to thrive better. It gives players a sense of having their own place. It also encourages guilds to interact.

3)No experience for quests
Most games now have it setup where quests yield more experience than killing mobs. I really think it shouldn't be that way. I think having items for rewards is just good enough.

4)Items can be stolen off corpses and/or lost when they decay
Adds some suspense to the game.

5)Graphics = great, but gameplay>graphics
Graphics aren't #1, but they're pretty close to it.

6)Events are held by moderators not npcs
I really like it when events are held on a certain day at a certain time. This gives you a sense of accomplishment and even prestige. Having npcs that give the event quest to everyone for a whole week just isn't that exciting.

7)Faction controlled towns
Another fun thing. Although you shouldn't be required to join a faction. But if you don't like what their doing, join the opposing one and try to change things

8)Developers who care more about the benefit of the game than money (never will happen)
As long as we live in this world, there will always be people who care more about money than anything else. If I had the time to make this greatest MMORPG out there for you folks, I would.

I'm sure I'll get some disagreements on this, but I'm posting it anyway. Hopefully someone else out there at least sees some of my views.

    1) Personally, I would prefer all skill to be player skill related. Aside from that, I enjoy a hybrid like AC1 offered.

    2) Nice but necessary. I would say guild halls and other guild prestige items are important though. Gives guilds more of a meaning than a group of people who raid for items together.

    3) Experience for quests wouldn't even be an option if the offered a skill system. But in the case of a level system, quests feel much more rewarding and much less monotonous than grinding creatures.

    4) I assume you mean player corpses. There's a certain balance needed here but I agree there should be an actual penalty for death. Either that or make death light but make mobs a challenge. I hate losing braincells playing MMOs.

    5) Good graphics and clone gameplay is jus so much easier though!

    6) I would definately agree. Hell I could care less about spending time making static quests. I'd rather a game dedicate a few people to running server wide events every day.

    7) Guild controlled towns imo. But faction controlled towns is better than Battlegrounds...

    8) Most developers too. But most developers don't have $50 million to fund their dream games. Publishers are businesses and businesses exist to make money. They have a responsibility to shareholders and their employees to do so.

And how many times does it take to actually get the game?

Have you checked out Darkfall? Apparently that's going to be centered almost exclusively on PvP. Now, I don't know about the other things. The only game that meets your criteria, as far as I can tell, is Meridian 59. Although you can instantly throw graphics out the window on that.

I enjoyed the game thoroughly. It was nice how the server was divided, sort of. There was Murder Method, an infamous PK guild, and then there was White Tower, a guild dedicated to eliminating PKers. Items could be taken from corpses, there were (capturable!) guild halls, skills improved with use, and the combat was almost twitch based. The game world's a little small and the community rightfully so. And I mean small. Very, very small. I'm talking 60 people on at once small. But it's fun. Limited item choice, which is nice in that you won't ever find yourself with a Short Sword of Crappy Adjective against the Godly Haxxor Halberd of Pwning. Absolutely excellent game  if you can stomach the RIDICULOUSLY dated graphics. Pixel shock warning.

edit: I forgot to mention the friendly community. The admins are also AWESOME people, and events happen every so often. The Uh.. Frenzy events I think they're called, happen once I week I believe. The skeis turn red and it becomes COMPLETELY open PvP. Apparently they're fun. XD

I'm pretty sure they also host other events. I remember one, but not what it was called. It's been years. . .

This is CreativeName's fancy schmancy sig. Let the 'ooh'ing and 'ahh'ing commence... Now.

The trueth of the matter is that, useing the Gain level scheme is a way to monitor the amount of time wasted way working ones ass off to see progress... personally if you want skill games then require a more direct kind of skill then you should try more FPS kind of games.

The online RPG scene not only allows players to develope personal Gaming skill, Like the ability to summon insomnia at will and the other genral LANing apps. Just laning at home.

Although you have some good points in your wish list. but as stated its been Asked before and never completely resolved.

I hate to be repetitive, but this almost sounds like ASHERON'S CALL to a T.  Granted, Asheron's Call doesn't have awesome graphics and they are dated, but like you said in your OP, Gameplay>graphics.  Turbine does seem to care more about the benefit of the game then they do money as they continue to put out monthly content and updates for the players.  If they cared only about the money, they would just leave it alone, never update it and take in the cash until it died.

Yes, it does indeed seem that the old classic "Asheron's Call" has most of the features and elements that you say would make up your perfect mmo.  As far as the faction controlled towns, hell simply play on the Darktide server.  Allegiances fight in towns all the time for control or the right to be in that given town for the time that they are there.

A beautiful expansive relaxing game world, player run so a dependency on non combat classes to do the daily jobs associated with running a kingdom/city/village whatever...Open classes so as to not get pigeonholed in to any one philosophy, a lot of character customization, the ability to build, destroy, upgrade anything in game be it cities, churches, transport, clothes, bridges you get the idea, also with the architecture you should have sub-classes like architect/engineer/artists that are a necesity if you wish to build, decorate, repair your possesions, so if you have a big guild/org and you want to have a new guild hall you will need to hire an architect, basically a lot of scope.

i think the single most important aspect is the world and how imaginative and expansive it is, i don't like boundaries, if you want to go out for a walk and you delve too far in too the woods, there is every possability that you could get lost, you can harvest/live anywhere treetops, fields, crypts, woodland whatever takes your fancy, if you want a pet you have to go to the trouble to find an infant/egg which could be very difficult for rarer creatures and care for it and raise it. that's about it for now... something like that.

copy paste, there are other things i'll come back later.

Nice dream MMORPG I like your ideas and that would be a damn good game. Although I would say getting experience for quests just not a lot of experience to make one want to do the quests instead of fighting mobs, but also not making it dependent on fighting those mobs. I like the idea of having things stolen from corpse or the item getting lost after death, i beleive there should be some penalty to death. Events that are heald by moderators also sounds like a good idea it sounds as if it could be alot more fun then the events held by npc's. I like where you're going with the faction thing as well.
