Pax Dei has, by all accounts, had a pretty smooth early access launch. This morning, though, the servers crashed which could wreck some havoc on player's graphics settings.

You okay?
It's going to get wiped. A few times. They have said this repeatedly. I played for 7 hours yesterday. We had a group of 5 that went East into the Wilderness and fought our way through a series of towers that were housing some members of what appears to be a cult called the Inquisition. 2 of them were fairly small (but still contained an amazing number of these folks). In one we found a named leader and when killed we found an intriguing Sigil and a recipe for a special Greatsword (don't have the resources to craft it yet) . We went to the 3rd tower which was more like a small castle, but it had even harder Inquisitors called Sentinels which we could beat but at great cost. We eventually retreated, went back home, stored our loot, repaired our gear, and went back out to a different part of the Wilderness which contained ruined complexes overtaken by "Zebians" that seem to be some sort of zombielike group, but they had many classes including some that were casters, some that had a life tap, some that had a horrific poison DoT attack. For the most part these enemies were stronger than the Inquisitors so we had to take it slow. One named mob, the Hivemaster (or something like that) dropped a recipe for pants. We elected to go back home and see what they did. We found that they were only cloth, so less armor, but they allowed the wearer to create a circle of consecrated ground which raised our defenses and increased our health regen. SWEET! Our first magic spell!
Overall we found 6-7 named NPCs that usually dropped something worthwhile which opened up new recipes or had some resource. And beating on these harder creatures certainly helped us raise our weapon and defense skills.
Also, the nature of the open world allowed folks to drop in and out as life dictated. If one person had to log out, they could always catch up to us later on. Plus there is something special about 5 grown men running for their lives because they didn't realize that around the corner were 10 NPC dudes in armor now chasing us down a hill and hoping at least one of us survived so he could rez the rest...
So you asked WHY? That's why. Do I think the game will have enough content to keep us all invested until it launches in 2025 or beyond. No, I really doubt that. But nights like last night certainly make it worth the $30 I paid... for me at least. And coming home from our adventures after discovering a new resource that opens up a different avenue of crafting, or building a new wing/level on our base... is just really fun. IF, and it's a big IF, you like these kinds of things.

I love the start of a new mmorpg where people are eager to get in, discussion on forums, rants, raves people in game. It's awesome.

These guys have, by FAR, been the best at communicating pro-actively that I have ever experienced. My Discord is pinged 5-7 times a day since launch that outlines any issues, what they think could be the cause, and how they are fixing it.
I think their biggest issue is simply going to be that the game itself needs more "game". There is no economy to speak of because there is no vendor, no auction house, and no currency. All that is likely to come in the near/middle future. Probably accompanied by a wipe (or two),
Let me ask you, what was the last MMORPG that you actually played that was bug free (and well populated) when you played it after waiting for a few years? And how long did you stick with that MMORPG? Just trying to see what game you visualize as the standard to hold the other MMORPGs against.

I would put forth that if a MMORPG is dead after a few years (and still low quality) it probably wasn't worth playing ever.
But Slap, you and your crew are gaming tourists, you don't stick very long with much of anything, yes?
Well not compared to me anyways, I've been playing 7D2D exclusively for over a year now, over 2200 hours according to Steam.

That's called a sandbox lol.
Lot of people rather create our own content.
Think about it, a theme park has every encounter curated and balance for the experience, be it easy or hard, the developer wants to deliver. A sandbox, however is the wild west. You're going to give players a toolbox and throw them into the open wild to go do whatever they can think of within the limitations, even pushing those limitations, of your game. I mean good luck, honestly. More than likely the players are going to do a bunch of crazy crap you never even imagined. They're going to find all the loop holes in your systems and use them to their advantage. In all of this you have to keep some sort of functional economy, things for players to do and achieve, and ultimately create an entertaining and fun experience for enough players to actually turn a profit and get paid.
That's a tall order, frankly. It's not something that should be taken on lightly, and explains why so many of these games fail.
We'll see where this one lands, but I don't think of sandbox developers as lazy. In my opinion it's a much taller order than a theme park game.

I just got home from watching The Fellowship of the Ring in 4DX. I took my son and daughter. For the 3 of us it cost $86.31. I also paid $53 for the "package deal" at the concession stand of 2 sodas, 2 popcorns and 2 candy pouches. $140.. for 3.5 hours. And don't get me wrong, it was AWESOME to watch the movie in a theater like this. But man... as far as value... yikes.
So yeah, we will likely play until August or so... and call it a worthy adventure to add to our list. Then peek back in during major updates.
Like I said, I'm just curious about Scott's comment. I genuinely am curious what the last MMORPG he played AFTER waiting for a few years after launch, and how long he stuck with it. Is this a case where he waits 2 years and finds the perfect game to play for the next decade? If so, thats awesome. But If we are waiting 2 years to play a game for a few months anyhow... I dunno... seems much less awesome to me.
To me the most important thing for an Early Access or Crowdfunded project is whether the company does what they say they will do. In this case, they were very straight about what the state of the game was (they gave us MULTIPLE free trials/tests), that it would have issues, that it has PvP, that they WILL wipe (repeatedly), and that they plan to charge a sub that is tied to land ownership. I have no issue with subs, but don't really like the idea of charging based on pixel property. That said, I bought knowing this is the plan... so if it becomes a deal breaker later, it's on ME.

There is no guarantee a fully released game is going to be less buggy or more fun. You only assume it is. I think the most important thing is to research the game you're buying and decide if it is worth it. I also don't think early access games are not worth it. In fact many are better than the released games. There is always a risk in both released and early access, just an artificial tag isn't going to change the condition of the game.
How bad was Fallout 76 or Cyberpunk 2077 when they 'released' were they better than an early access title?

What puzzles me is that you don't have anything that is properly launched to play, have you and your gang gone thorough that many games?
I am not yet a cult's Supreme Leader like Kyleran, but I have loads of bought and unplayed games, I can see myself passing unplayed ones on in my will.

I think another major issue many are taking with the game is that its a true social sandbox. You make the fun to be had and its meant to be based around a group or community. But this is the nature of gaming now. So many people want drop in, drop out, immediate fun, with little to no investment. My question is will Pax Dei stick to its plan or cater to this crowd to get numbers. This is why I am in the wait and see crowd.
If we are talking MMO-like (very lite) the most recent would be War Thunder, but I returned to that game this year because it the best of its genre in my eyes. I think the fact you find yourself with a "guild" of gamers to "feed" may account for a lot of the differences between us here, I can remember talking with guild officers about "the next MMO" but we sort of spread ourselves over a handful of MMORPG's rather than jumping ship. There was a push for "the new" though and I would guess that those who found us too slow in that regard moved on. Any guild reflects its members, we were quite happy playing it that way, you are reflecting yours and keeping them happy.
