Has anyone tried or went back to Asheron's Call because of it's availability now on Direct2Drive.com

I was just really curious how much www.direct2drive.com offering the latest release of Asherons Call for $19.99 has helped the subscriber base of AC? Has anyone here rejoined AC or tried AC for the first time because of it's new opening on direct2drive.com?

If only there were a few more new players to Asherons Call, I think that ACs new digital download option might possibly bring this old classic back to life. Even if it could double its current 20k or so subscribers, that in itself would be a great success and would also make me want to go back and play it again as well.

Great news!  I honestly think that if you do give it a try, you will love it after playing it for only a short time.  Once you get into the tinkering and stuff, it will really amaze you at how genuinely deep AC is, and how much it has to offer. Remember when you go in however not to be turned off by the old school graphics.  Remember that gameplay is much more important then eye candy.

It is still very fun, but it is still a grindfest. Unfortunatly, Asheron's Call's old "faults" were some of the things i loved most, and Turbine has "fixed" them all.

No more twitch based pvp (still better than most games, but nothing like it used to be).  I remember pvp fights that would last for 30 minutes and start in Ayun and end up in Qbar.  Dodging war spells, jumping onto rooftops, slidecasting.  AC's old school pvp was the most fun I have ever had playing MMORPGs.  Granted, a person could LS recall right before they died, so many fights did not end up in a kill.  However, for me it is the fight that is fun, not just the victory.

Global chat channels added.  I hate global chat channels. I mean sometimes there is some funny chat argument, but rarely does it have anything that adds to the game.

I came back to AC. It is still a blast.  The main downfall is the low population, and the fact that most everyone is over level 100 now. Luckily, AC is not a game that really requires grouping just to level.

Haven't played for a long time, but my old and formerly considered "high-level" main (Aaahahaha!) Archer would now be a mere punkbutt newbie nowadays.  The rest are mules and one slot is open for a new character.

Antique graphics and very low player population would be negatives, something I noted last year when I reactivated my old account and migrated over to Turbine to play the free trial.

On the up side, the housing which previously nearly always full is now available in huge amounts -- you can get a house practically anywhere you choose.

Frankly, completely updated graphics, motion-capture animations, particle effects, etc., would go a long way in restoring the game to some semblance of its former glory.  Problem with that is that if you wanted to spend that kind of money you might as well make....

(Telepathic, subliminal, Jedi Mind-trick message now inserted for Turbine)

Asheron's Call: The Prequel (but with a more exciting name).

That would be a game *hand-wave mind-trick* where the original concept game mechanics would be honored to a greater degree than (ick) AC2, keeping the "look" of the original Dereth (albeit updated), and staying true to the skill system, the allegiance system (needs tweaks to avoid "xp-chains" and exploitation), as well as maintaining the evolving story-arc which Turbine did so well.

This would be a prequel where *wicked strong mind-trick hand-waving* you would be able to use the lore already created for the gameworld and get to see Asheron (although he would be so young, the Mage Council might be better), Bael'Zharon, Lord Atlan, the Frore Undead, the Shadows, etc., in the history which is already written.

You could actually play characters of the Empyreans, the Dericost (I think) Undead, the Shadows, and perhaps one "neutral faction" for anyone not interested in PvP.  Shadows, Empyreans, Undead (or whomever) could be set up in various starting areas of the continent and would create a natural RvR/PvP dynamic -- with outposts and towns in the Direlands (high-level lucrative area) as the battlegrounds and areas to be fought over for control.

It's a dream I know, but sometimes that's all we have.
