    My god...
The only concern the devs have is free up names used by inactive players rather then making new and original content for the pve mode that is loosing many players.

Just another reason not to play if this is their version of caring about the existing players. They are basically saying: Play, or else... what next?

This isn’t something new. Game companies have done this before.

Why should someone log in a few times and keep the same their names forever if they are not expected to come back?

There's no technological reason to do this. The amount of data your character's name takes up is microscopic and storage space is cheap. Every human being on earth could have ten characters all with unique names and that amount of data would take like a couple of gigabytes to store uncompressed. They're just being twats. Anyway I'm sure Iliketospooge will be upset he lost his character name

It's not something new but it's always been extremely stupid and thus why it has mostly fallen out of practice, btw the "in awhile" is actually in 6 months.

Agreed, so here's my roast. While it's been done before, it is very rare and players go apeshit when it happens and rightfully so.

It's an mmoRPG. In an RPG character names and personas mean a lot. Maybe not to weekend casuals, but for hobbyists and fans of the genre, it's the thing stories are made of.

It's an online game. Names and friends lists are how we keep in contact. In some online games, names even carry weight and social recognition. When name resets happen, it tells me the studio was too incompetent or lazy to build a robust naming system; and it also tells me how little they care about the integrity of their RP experience and the players who have supported them.

What this tells me personally is that I won't be buying a license on Xbox and won't be returning to the Steam PC game either. They built a stupidly restrictive naming system in the first place. Now they're taking that out on their players? Nah. buhbye.

Well, I disagree, I think it's fine after a reasonable amount of time. In my mind that would be a year but it's their game.

As far as "no reason to do it because names don't take up a lot of space;" that's not why they are doing it.

It's to allow players to claim names they might want but that someone who doesn't play has taken.

It's ridiculous to think that a player who logs in a few times and then quits the game then claims that name forever.

Adding another potential "quit point" I see.

Crazy to think someone who has not played in 6 months when a game has little to no updates for longer may want to come back for an expansion.

May hats off top good sirs. I did not have that on my bingo card.

Let's see, clueless devs, shitty game play, chaotic and pointless development schedule, and now penalizing the players they ran off with their own incompetence. BINGO HERE!!

Thank you dumb ass NW dev staff for finally giving me ZERO reason to ever patronize your pathetic game again.

These morons could try the patience of saints.

Well they don't claim that name forever unless the devs have everyone on one single megaserver.

Maybe we should all copy right our online game names/personas so then if anyone else dares to use them we can sue.....

I find this situation to be hilariously ironic, because I am sure someone at AGS thought that by implementing this, it would get people to log on more.

Cryptic uses "megaservers" and they solved this problem a long time ago. It's just another rookie misstep by AGS. Death by a thousand cuts. But, let that sink in for a moment; Cryptic has their shit together more than AGS. If that isn't a lulz moment.

These guys built a beautiful game, with a great soundscape, and excellent melee combat. But they run it like a bunch of first time crowd-funded rookies, and I just don't get that.

I honestly think the only people complaining about this are people who don't play the game. If you haven't played in six months or longer, who cares. You shouldn't get to keep your name. I haven't played in six months, I'm indifferent to this.

If you cared enough about the game to play, you wouldn't have a six-month absence from the game, even if you are waiting for content. Because that means you haven't logged in ONCE in that time period.

What are the studio and new players actually getting out of this? I can't see the studio getting anything unless they think this will entice old players back. Does anyone here believe that will happen because I don't? New players are just more likely to get a favourite name. Only more likely because you still have the last six month players and anyone who gets in before you on console. If you don't get the name you want (and many gamers are not even bothered about what name they have) you can just pick another of your favoured names.

Once again as has been mentioned already in this thread, the main issue with New World has always been the mismanagement not the game itself. But the management is not going to change so the game is stuck with this Achilles heel.

"OMG! I better reinstall and play it now! I'll buy something from the cash shop while I'm at it!"

Is this really what the devs think is going to happen?

It is a buy to pay game though. So a lot of folks are going to quit once they finish current content, then return when new content is released. I cant understand this stance. Then again, i cannot understand how anyone can play this game consistently for the past 6 months either.

I guess I've just never been so attached to a name or felt like I was so uncreative that I couldn't alter the spelling to make it phonetically similar that I was just going to not play a game because I couldn't get a name. Seems silly to me but I guess it's a big deal to others.

I know certain games people book names by creating several alts with the top popular names. Then they sell rights to the name . I suppose enough people complain that names are wasted by players who stopped playing so they ask for the names to be freed for use.

Well for that to have happened here and be a good reason to do this AGS would have had to investigate the names with 'no log in over the past 6 months' and see if they were "popular names". Considering how little management they have done that has ever been applauded do you think they did due process?

How did they solve it and if it’s by account (and players can share the same name) how do they differentiate from one legolas to another?
