lol they could give the team 10 more years and it wouldn't help.
I always look forward to seeing these shit tier indie "MMOs" crash and burn. Monsters and Memories next? What a dump.
The lesson I've learned from crowd-funded and indie MMOs is that only AAA studios can really pull this off. These over ambitious studios should learn to stay in their lane, develop something they can handle, and take baby steps to bigger projects.
Albion Online likes to have a word with you and yeah who doesn't like to shit on people attempting to do something against the MMORPG drought we're currently in?
Don't get me wrong, I'm also disappointed by projects like Pantheon etc. but to me this "I want to see all small MMO devs crash and burn" attitude sounds a bit like an offended child.
Personally I wish devs like the Monsters & Memories guys all the luck and hope they'll succeed.
Will I spend any cash on any MMO thats still in development? Hell no, I've learned my lesson a long time ago with Mortal Online but do I still have hope for another Albion Online success story? Definitely!
Btw. played Pantheon for a few hours and yeah I agree with everything that's been said before, it's more like an early alpha. The only posivite thing I have to say is that it ran quite good and that the new graphics style was a bit better looking than I expected. Here's to another 10 years ;-P
Did you think of Albion as an ace in the hole to prove that indie MMOs are good? It's the one outlier to them all. It isn't even a real MMO, but it is the one decent AA attempt out there and it took them years over their deadline to even get this close.
None of the others are any good. None of them are even worth the box fee.
Your delusion that these indies are an attempt to do something about an "MMO drought" is misplaced. You couldn't even name another real success or even a good one. Project Gorgon, Mortal, the lame CoH knockoffs, the Sagas of, the Chronicles of, the factured of, blah blah blah. All crap. Even Albion has only hit a niche success with an average of 10K players in the last 30 days according to Steam.
I'm not offended by anything other than a bunch of amateurs, in way over their heads, trying to sell their snake oil as the real deal. They don't mind taking money like a triple A studio with their hobbyist schlock. As such, they get the blowback that studios who push low effort go nowhere junk deserve.
Once these all finally fail, maybe we can get back on track to talking about real studios making real games.
Yes, Albion is not a real MMO and AAA devs are our friends. Purge them evil indie devs! Also, you don't sound offended at all

It's not like "non crowdfunded" MMORPGs are actually having any better of a track record are they?
I mean... maybe New World? Any other AAA MMORGs release in the last 5 years that was a success?
Albion Online is a success story, the problem is that so far it does look more like an outlier. Crowd funded MMOs have not been proven as even remotely reliable in producing a good game. But AAA is languishing as well, like you say NW is limping along.
The genre has needed a good AAA for years, the last being ESO in my eyes (some 10 years ago). We are going to see very few new AAA even over the next ten years. We will see several new CF MMOs in that time scale but its pot luck if we get another as popular as AO. I will point out that if SC is a huge success it will not be seen as a MMORPG success, even though it is MMO like as far as I am concerned.
The genre is in the doldrums, we just have to hope something down that line will change that as there is no better genre in my eyes.

Dead genre is mostly dead.
I think the days of the MMO where massively meant a lot of people playing together in the same place at once are slipping away. They're being replaced with smaller scale MMO's and co-op games. They might have the same number of people playing at the same time but not in the same "world" if you know what I mean.
Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?
Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.

I think dead genre really hits the nail on the head. For the investment in time / money / resources its just not worth it for an ever shrinking / aging percentage of the gaming world. Even this website was forced to expand its article horizons to make ends meet.
I am not into it at all but the future is gravitating towards mobile gaming and if that's where the money is that's where the investments go. While we have 3 computers in the house I know just out of immediate family 4 out of 5 brother in law households (of those 4 oldest 40, youngest 36) don't even have a computer in the house, their children's and their gaming is console or phone / tablet. School research is done on a tablet.
Also as far as that goes Forget an AAA MMORPG that was a released AND a success in the last 5 years have there even been any AAA MMORPG's released except New World?
According to wiki apparently Lost Ark is an MMORPG released in 2022 so maybe that meets the criteria? Camelot Unchained also shows as launched in 2020 so take that with a grain of salt. On that list you need to go back close to a decade to find some AAA MMOPRG's so its a pretty sad state of affairs.

The only joy I take from that is PC is growing, Console is shrinking. But Mobile - Cold Mobile - is master of them all.
i am not sure its just about convenience as I think people will game on what they have available and what they are used too. If the younger generations are always on the cell, don't use laptops, it makes sense that's where their gaming interest would be. They are spending $1500-$2000 on cell phones which is the cost of a decent gaming rig and i don't know many people without a cell phone these days.
in a somewhat funny coincidence I don't block the ads when i view this website so they get some kind of revenue but currently typing this i am looking at an ad for a Mobile RPG called Sword of Convallaria which graphically at least looks like a JRPG or something i would have played on Xbox / PS2 back in the day when i was younger.
