Crowdfunding MMORPGs seemed to be all the rage back in the 2010s, with multiple projects spinning up over the years. What about a certain project compelled you to back the game in the first place?

If it's a smaller studio making a game that I feel looks interesting, I will give it money, but generally only if it comes with early access.

I've only given twice and never more than $35.

I have only ever crowdfunded one game and it was because I was so excited with the game, the devs, the company, the legacy, the setting, classes, everything. Let's just say that dumpster fire is going on 11 years since I supported it, had my money refunded, and been in beta 1 for 6 years now with absolutely nothing to show for it.

    First and last time.

People seem to think they need to justify their reasons for backing a corwdfunded game....however it really simple at least for me.....

If I see something I would like to play that really interests me and I have the disposable income then I might back it in the hopes if bears fruit. Key words is "disposable income".

    That's it.

    I've backed two.

Camelot Unchained - Not because I was keen on playing a successor to Dark Age of Camelot but because, at the time, there were so many players who wanted this game to "be" I decided to help out and at the same time give it a try.

Pantheon - I didn't back the kickstarter as my basic rule, which has served me well, was to never back a project unless 1, I can see actual game play, 2, there is a reasonably experienced team or people behind it, 3, the people involved have at least released one game.

With Pantheon, the original team seemed fine but they showed NOTHING. It wasn't until I saw more game play that I thought it would be an ok bet to back it.

And of course, I always know that when I throw money at any crowd funded project it's "gone." I don't expect anything back, I don't expect success or failure, I merely give the money and hope for the best but ok with the worst.

In any case, all my crowd funded projects were successes except these two.

I've backed 3 and all have turned into duds/foreverware. I think I just invented a word. Anyway here's my walk of shame:

Star Citizen - I bought in because I believed in the original vision. I loved the Wing Commander games and was hoping for a modern day version of that. MMO features would be a bonus. I never expected that 12 years later we'd still be in ALPHA.

Chronicles of Elyria - So funny story a bunch of people in my Star Citizen group saw this one pop up and bought the smoke and mirrors that this was real. I bought in because they were convinced that this game would come out before Star Citizen and I didn't want to be left behind. Thankfully, I bought one of the cheaper packages on this one because the joke was on all of us.

Camelot Unchained - DAoC is one of my all time favorite MMO's. I have a lot of fond memories of that game prior to them killing it with the Trials of Atlantis expac which decimated the pvp player base. Anyway, a modern DAOC which focused purely on the PvP aspects? Yeah you bet! Sadly more foreverware. Again thankfully I bought in at one of the lowest packages. Like $25, so I'm not losing sleep over a refund or anything. Mark can keep it. It's fine.

Bottom line though: NEVER AGAIN! I don't care how sweet or pay to win your earl adopter packages are. Show me the game. Then I'll make a purchase decision. Until then, skeptical cat is still skeptical (my avatar).

I have backed 2 MMOS. Pantheon and Ashes.

For me I got sick of the MOBA trend. MOBAs got so much money, game developers started making MMOs into MOBA style games. The saturation of P2W and cash shops just started to break what made MMMOs great IMO. I saw Pantheon as a way to get an MMO style I had missed. Ashes at first was also that same thing. Tab Target EQ1 class system, not the trinity but Tank, DPS, Healer and support classes. Pantheon and Ashes both promised this and also stated no P2W cash shops.

Pantheon I dropped $50 bucks twice. Once for me and once for my wife. Ashes I dropped $100 pledge twice again for my wife and I. We got the early in discount so we each put in about 80-ish bucks. Later we paid $50 each to up grade to A2 access.

So it came down to two things. MMO market was no longer making games I wanted to play. They had forgotten what made them so big to start with. 2nd, the entry fee seems like small and worth losing if it did not pan out. Looking back, I would do it again. Even Pantheon. Not sure if I would back another.

Doesn't matter, I wouldn't back another mmorpg project, its too stupid. Last one I backed was Pantheon and we already see how that's turning out. I'm not saying crowdfunding can't pump out good games, but the last good crowdfunded mmo was Albion I think? And even that was floundering ALOT until it switched to f2p. For the most part, crowdfunded mmos simply can't work long term even if some of them make it across the finish line. You get pass the finish line and say you have a p2p model? How fast can a small team pump out updates to make the sub feel worth it to people? Just too many variables that a game with a smaller scope doesn't have to worry about.

I'll back a crowdfunded project just as soon as it has launched in a state that I want to play it. No sooner than that. At that point, I no longer care how it got its start.

Never backed one, probably never will back one.

I only pay money for games that have value right now. If I pre-order something, which is rare, it's usually a series im already familiar with and we're only a month or two from launch, with plenty of evidence that the game has been built and (mostly) works.

I am a fan of Kickstarter.  I have backed a lot... too many projects.  Mostly, I'm happy, but there are a few cases where I wasn't.  I know the risks, but there are perks to KS that you don't always get at retail.

I won't back a software project though.  Software is very complicated and MMOs more complicated than average software.  I've worked in software development (not as a coder) and projects always missed target dates and almost always were more expensive than initial estimates.

Only thing I won't stomach is someone telling me what I should not support. Long as I'm not hurting anyone, leave me be.

After NCSoft made the decision to shut down City of Heroes, I contributed to a kickstater for a replacement game. I never expected it to be made and I forgot what it was for. I just wanted to send a big FU to NCSoft.

Never will back any game. I figure if they jump straight to crowd funding for the game it's because no investors believed in the project.

The first screenshot from Mortal Online in a small article about the game had piqued my interest, mostly because they promissed a game like Ultima Online in first person powered by Unreal engine. This idea combined with a rather dark and gritty look was very appealing to me.

Some time later I attended to Games Convention (predecessor of Gamescom) in Leipzig and met the Mortal Onlines devs in person. They were extremely enthusiastic and friendly and this kinda hyped me even more so I backed my first (and last) game with one of the biggest packages, which fortunately was 'only' 80 or 90€.

The game turned out one of the worst pieces of software I have ever installed on my PC and I was quickly cured from any backing-fomo to ever occur to me again.

I've never backed an kickstarted MMO and almost certainly wouldn't.  The genre is filled with MMOs launched far too soon as they ran out of funds.  Kickstarted MMOs always ask for much, much less than they actually need.

Early access I have backed. Crowdfunded as in kickstarter so far no.

I threw some money at Crowfall years ago, and almost Camelot Unchained. I won't do it again. Steam Early Access is the closest I'll get to crowdfunding now.

EDIT: I forgot to add the reasoning behind backing. It was devs from previous games I liked. That idea doesn't hold as much weight with me now, getting burned a few times on "blind faith" ruined crowdfunding for me.

Never backed crowefunding or EA with the exception of Larian for BG3 because I knew the company and I was almost certain they would deliver
    And they did
    Larian is the gold standard.
