As a former critic of this game I will say D4 is in a pretty good place now. I'm up to level 83 which is significant in that I could never get past 70 before because the game was just so boring. The fact I'm closing in on 100 and still interested and looking forward to playing means they've addressed a lot of what was wrong with the game previously. Is it perfect? No, but it's now, in my opinion, actually fun to play and keeps me engaged which is a huge improvement. It's going in the right direction.
The game is OK. I've played less this season than last as last season I did the full journey then. This time around I stopped before doing any of the final step of the season journey.
I still find the game to be soulless. And I'm not really excited for the expansion. At least not from what I've seen.
I still stand by my opinion that this game is perfect for creating alts, story gameplay etc. Once you start grindin, it quickly devolves into nonsense.
Ok I think I've put my finger on what I find more engaging about at least this season than my previous attempts at approaching this game. It's because the primary source of leveling past level 50 is farming the blood maiden boss during the helltide. This activity has a number of synergies involved that make it the #1 way to level.
1. It's an open group activity meaning any number of people can join in and get the full reward. This means there's often higher level players helping out which makes things go much faster than it would solo. I've not once needed to do this activity solo.
2. It sends wave after wave of demons at you granting piles of XP and gear in a relatively short amount of time.
3. This activity is also a task for the tree of whispers and often fulfills others bounties such as clearing demons or cultists.
4. This activity also drops piles "mother's gifts" which is the seasonal reputation currency allowing you to progress in rank while getting leveled up.
Previously, or at least in the first season, the primary way to level was grinding nightmare dungeons which is an apt name because they quickly become nightmarishly boring. It's slow and pure grind. Takes 15 minutes sometimes to clear one and you'll get a quarter XP bar toward you next level and raise the glyph of your choice by the same amount. I always started doing the math on how long it's going to take to hit 100 and just gave up. Now I can bypass a massive portion of that grind because I can craft a nightmare key for level 100 enemies which is tier 40 or something and get a massive chunk of glyph XP per run.
That's a big wall of text to explain why the game is more enjoyable to me now than before but there it is. Maybe it's helpful to someone.
How nifty of them. I'll get to their patch when I feel like playing.
I'm not all that thrilled with the current season theme so I didn't bother to purchase the sold version. If I do anything it will be advancing my eternal characters when I'm in the mood.

I still think they need to add sets.
