Moral to the story is to pay for better cheating. Blizzard sponsored cheating.

A figure made more staggering when you realize that figure probably only represents a fraction of the total number of cheaters, many who don't get caught.

Seems like a good use of this fancy AI tech we have now. I'm sure someone is working on it if it doesn't already exist, but it seems like AI could run server side and heuristically watch for suspicious behavior such as repeated "lock on" aiming or a person's uncanny ability to follow opponents around from behind walls. You probably wouldn't have the AI actual boot players and issue bans but rather have it flag accounts as suspicious for humans to go review replays of the match as well as a few silent screenshots taken by the client to see if there's any telltale signs like extra rectangles being drawn around enemies especially when behind a wall or other visual obstruction.

And it can match wits with the AI that will soon be making and running the bots.

Modern gaming, you do sometimes think studios have their priorities wrong. Even more so in a game which I think now has PvP.

Eh an AI generated aimbot would be very derivative of aimbots written previously. Just like AI art and AI music and AI text. How obvious is it when some bot drops on these forums and spits out some word salad response generated from Chatgpt? It would produce the same predictable behavior a human generated aimbot would. Thing is since your anticheat would be running server side there would be no way from the client to know what benchmarks it's even looking at to flag suspicious behavior.

I use to love Overwatch but the cheating runs rampant. This is a small bandaid and it won't take long for new cheats to go around the new system (probably already has).

But of course no one cheats in these games....you just need to "git gud"...

What's the point of cheating. You KNOW you're cheating and then you win. It's not a surprise to you and you know it wasn't your skill. It's just more of being in an interactive movie at that point except you know how the movie ends.

that is probably just the tip of the iceberg....im guessing these games usually only capture a small fraction of the cheaters.
  • cheyanecheyane Member LegendaryPosts: 9,416
If that is a small fraction I would hate to think what the real figure is. Must be staggering.

I'm gonna be that guy and ask....how do we not know these figures are being manipulated by Blizzard themselves? The head of Blizzard admits to running carry groups when he plays wow in his free time and I still can't stop thinking of a much older story of EA employees selling Fifa cards for real money that they would just create and send to people. A more 'realistic' view is that 500k isn't really a whole lot in terms of a f2p title of this type. Doesn't seem unrealistic that someone would make an account just to put a bot on it and party up to park it during a match to help matches go more 'smoothly' vs grouping with pure randoms.

Because they want the veneer of “being good.”

It doesn’t matter if they’re not good. All that matters is that people who think they’re good.
