Have never installed this "game" during the entirety of its existence. I don't plan to start now.

My kids play Roblox. By in large they freeload because I refuse to let them spend money on it. The only times they've spent money on Robux (the Roblox currency) is when someone gave them a Robux gift card. Anyway, most of what I see on that platform is cheap knockoffs of other titles done in the minecrafty Roblox engine. A lot of them actually rip off assets from the games or movies they're copying. More than one game they had been playing has gotten shut down for trademark or copyright infringement. One has to wonder how much money they made prior to getting shut down, though.

I honestly don't understand why it's so popular. While it's largely free to play it's also largely complete shovelware garbage. I guess there's just that many people with no taste and will play any old POS game if it's free.

I can't fathom how it's business model works. It's known to be terribly unprofitable as this article states.

"So yes, Roblox is unquestionably “working.” Yet Roblox is also unprofitable. Very unprofitable. What’s more, Roblox’s losses continue to swell because its impressive rate of revenue growth has been outpaced by that of its costs. [...] Over the last twelve months it has averaged $138 in costs for every $100 in revenue."

It looks like Roblox is trying to use the Amazon model of lose billions until you become an essential service and become too big to fail.
Like Amazon, Uber, Door Dash and Netflix.

But those businesses provide services such as product delivery, food delivery and people transportation.

Whereas, Roblox provides ...uh ...um ...hmm ...a place for shady adults to meet kids?

Given the size of revenue that passes through the platform it is incredibly embarrassing they aren't profitable. They are way past the point of figuring out how to grow revenue and achieve profitability afterwards at their size and scale.

I don't play roblox and don't really get the appeal HOWEVER roblox is just a platform where others can produce games and such.

My son has been playing something called Deepwoken for a few years now and him and his discord friends really seem to be into it and it looks better than most other roblox crap I have seen.

The kind of things people have managed to lure children to do in this game , make my flesh crawl. They do not spend enough to keep children safe from predators.

Funny enough most of the peeps my son meets in roblox are mid teens and up so don't let the crap minecraftian graphics fool you.

Not sure if you mean that in general in gaming or not but roblox is not any worse or better than any other online game out there.

Kids aside, I actually go out of my way to block this game on the home network. There have been to many bad actors, and more importantly, criminal activities on the servers (very well documented). How did society repay them, gave them a IPO.... smh. Only game/service that I actually went out of my way to block like this. It has always seemed sketchy from the start.

My 6 year old has very much been eyeing this one.

Right now he's satiated by Minecraft but it's only a matter of time.

Just to give input, I was a tween/teen wandering the internet, and it was fairly common for me to try to milk the few sites I stumbled on - "second worlds," official forums for kids' networks, Neopets, Gaia, social media like Tumblr, you know. (My parents refused to pay for MMOs and I didn't quite have the allowance.)

It completely makes sense that kids hook onto Roblox, and especially a game or few, as a primary hobby. It's just ease of access. I probably would've been the same way.

The issue is definitely when the adults and kids linger on the same platform - which is an issue that's as old as the Internet itself, but also increasingly obvious, yet unaddressed, as platforms converge into major bigger ones.

Users can't police the internet, companies cannot either, it is one of the reasons I have come to the conclusion that our societies would be better of without social media. Forums are OK, texting etc but Twatter, Facepalm, games which are designed to be meeting places are too detrimental to society no matter the benefits.
