"Swimming is a nice addition, and it’s weird how something so simple can transform how I travel a region - now I just swim across rivers or small bodies of water instead of having to pick my way around them."

I love how people would twist themselves into knots making excuses as to why AGS didn't add actual swimming, then they finally do it anyway. Simply put, swimming wasn't in the game for as long as it was because AGS was lazy, so people can bury all their theories and 'lore reasoning' in a nice big pile.

I do feel like console can briefly turn it around since a lot of console players are starved for another mmo choice and honestly I'd play New World over BDO on console, but its more of a preference thing.

"If combat and the overall combat presentation are why the developers are pushing New World: Aeternum as an MMO ..."

Er, I thought they were pushing it as an ARPG?

"Despite Amazon’s insistence that New World: Aeternum is an ARPG now ..."

    Er .....?

So the last major content update was October 2023? Was that when the expansion dropped? Now its a year later when this drops but it adds nothing to PC. Fast forward 6, 9, 12, or more months until we get new content so maybe 2 full years without anything new except "We launched on console".

The article indicates the entire game is built on players and population. And there is none and nothing here will bring them back. Is AGS counting on there being enough console, new player interest for the game to return to its former state? If so, thats a bet I would not take.

Yea, that was a typo. It's fixed now. It should have said

"If combat and the overall presentation are why the developers are no longer pushing New World..."

Thanks. I hate to be a stickler on stuff like this, that's what 50 years of programming will do to you. That missing "not" operation has plagued me before :)

We will never be mad at people pointing out typos and stuff. We're all human - I knew exactly what I meant there and my eyes glossed over it in the edit. It happens.

Are they going to charge for this new release? I bought the original game when it first came out and didn't get hooked. I might try it again with the new stuff added, but not if it is going to cost money. It sounds like it's pretty much the same game for PC.

If you own the base game and the Angry Earth Expansion already on PC, your existing version will just update to this one at no charge. You'll only need to buy it if you don't own those (or are starting on Console)

They literally want to milk the console players with an already dead game.
The same old shit, now with swimming and console peasants... Yaaaayyy...

It will be interesting to view (from a distance as I don't plan on returning) how the population rises with the re-launch and how quickly it dips after. I mean, I'm hoping it doesn't dip and that the devs actually start to put in regular content. That just seems so unlikely this far post-launch with how many issues they have run into historically and without an experienced MMO dev team (other than what they may have learned from NW itself).

The PC game will be new. Think of it as New World: A Real Reborn but you get it at no additional cost if you bought New World and the DLC. It is more of change than what adding another update to the first game would have been but haven't finished downloading it to get a better idea of the extent and manner of that changed. As soon as it's done I'll be checking it out.

the one thing I don't like is the stupid archetypes they took the best feature from original game and made it worse.
@lotrlore I like your idea it's a ship wreck just have a crate of weapons wash ashore. I prefer the flail and don't see that option maybe I missed it. so you can still level anything then?

From what the article says, archetypes essentially just work as a guide point and I suppose more veteran players can choose which ever combination they want. Admittedly, I haven't tested Aeterum to know for sure.

I got 180 hours out of New World, far from perfect but I got my money's worth and haven't even tried the expansion yet.

That is correct they are just a starting point to help people get going. You can still swap out weapons at anytime, and respect at anytime. They don't do anything other than change your Armour at the start and help new players get going.

I like the game and enjoyed it during the console beta more than I thought I would. Hopefully it does well with that crowd. I will play it

Well, it is a buy to play game. They do not really owe you any content. That being said, they did handle it badly. Original game had no mid-game content and a horrible watermark system. Most folks quit shortly after release due to server ques and not much to do after lvl 30ish. This is why only 50% of players hit lvl 30 and only 20% lvl 60. Hopefully that is all fixed now. Console players are a different sort from PC. We shall see....

I'm looking forward to trying out the beta with my kid. I loved New World even with all it's problems. If you look at review on steam a lot of them that are negative have 1000s of hours.

The games not perfect but for $60 a 1000 hours is a great $/hr of entertainment even 500 hours it is.

With ESO going down hill and never really played BDO this will be an interesting addition to the ps5 and xbox.

I read the article I was just confused as to the weapon part I made it past the first intro boss during the console beta or whatever it was. I thought it looked really bad on my xbox but the watermarks they had may have made it look bad.
Im guessing there is no way to pick your bonus for crafting other than taking the ones you want even if its a combo you dislike.

If they want people to keep playing their game, then they owe the playerbase some new content.  Otherwise, well, they get what they get and right now its servers with sub-300 players in a game that once had 2000+ per server. My point is do not expect your players to hang around (or come back) if you give them nothing new to experience.

"Or better yet, pull an Elder Scrolls Online, which has a room in its tutorial sequence where every weapon is laid out for you to choose from."

This 100% - although the weighted drops and crafting bonuses kinda will need to be adjusted if you change weapons/armor I'd think...
