Can you help me identify this MMO?

My memory is very hazy, but I can't seem to find any record that this game existed anywhere!
It was a pre-rendered game in the style of something like Baldur's Gate, with a fixed camera. The setting was low sci-fi — I remember there being cornfields and flamethrowers, definitely not fantasy but also not advanced sci-fi stuff.
The game must have been released sometime between 1998 and 2003 or so, due to the house I recall living in while playing it. I doubt you could go much lower than 1998 and still find similar graphics.
That's about all I can remember.

You sure it was a mmo? Even Everquest and runescape were new in 1999.

Don't worry, I'm here to help you figure out what game is stuck in your memory!
Based on your description, I'll take a few guesses:
    1. Syndicate (1998) - a sci-fi tactical game with pre-rendered backgrounds and a fixed camera.
    2. Fallout Tactics (2001) - a post-apocalyptic RPG with turn-based combat and pre-rendered environments.
    3. Arcanum (2001) - a sci-fi RPG with a mix of fantasy elements, pre-rendered backgrounds, and a fixed camera.
If none of these sound quite right, please let me know and I'll keep searching!

It was absolutely an MMO, I'm well aware of games like Arcanum, and it's not that. I even recall downloading it from their launcher on my 56k internet.

You sure it was a mmo? Even Everquest and runescape were new in 1999.
There were plenty of MMOs around by 1999-2000. e.g., Lineage(the original, not 2.) Going to guess it was a Korean game.

Given the info you provided, I cam up with two possibilities:

    Infantry and The 4th Coming

I may be way off but I enjoy looking. :)

Elidien mentions Infantry, so I'll give you a link so that you can see whether that's it or not:

Can you go into some details of what you remember doing in the game? do you remember if you had to create a character? Do you recall anything about what the enemies or people in the game where like?

I mean, from that time period, the one game that really comes to mind that i played a TON of was Neverwinter Nights with the online modules-  lots of those modules felt like their own worlds and very much had elements that mimicked mmorpg elements.

I will think on this some more, but if you have any details about the game itself, even if they are small details, that would help.

Wow, I did not know it was still around and on Steam even. I just found it looking at the parameters. I am not sure about fields but I bet it has flamethrowers. :)

Nope, none of these games are it. Appears I might be doomed to never figure out what it was.  :(

It was definitely not 3D, but pre-rendered 3D art similar to games like Baldur's Gate. All I remember is it having a setting that would probably be now referred to as "dieselpunk". I just recall there being cornfields, enemies with flamethrowers. And it was absolutely an MMO.
It has been at least over 20 years so I can't remember much beyond that.

Definitely had to have released before 2004. Going to guess it was probably around 2001, but really anytime after 1998 and before 2004.

Infantry was originally developed by Harmless Games, which shut down.  Sony Online Entertainment picked it up and hosted it for some years, but eventually shut it down.  After that, people were able to pick up the pre-Sony version and run it the same way that Sony had, though I'm not sure if they got (or wanted) the changes made while it was hosted by SOE.
