  I thought this was a single player game where you could interact with other players through things like selling and buying and that collectively you could affect the game world but in reality you were all solo?

  It has a lot more interconnectivity than that it is MMO like, but you can play it completely solo as well. It is one of my paid for but not played games (I even have Odyssey). Maybe someone who has played can expand on my answer as I may not even get round to playing this in 2024, too much to play!

  Haven't played in a few years but the game, it was suppose to have an offline mode but that was canned, has a solo mode where you play in the same verse as others but you wont see other payers and can't pvp, this is called private mode.
  
  It has open mode where you connect and can see all other players, can pvp etc etc. It's all in the same "universe" however. As for the universe itself they used to have events you could join and fight as a collective and if certain goals were reached it unlocked "stuff" that everyone could then buy to use and such.
  
  Now I dunno if anything has changed but it has been a long time since I read about anything being done that is interesting by the devs, jameson was my fave spot cause of the discount on buying ship parts etc.
  
  Having this being attacked, via an event by the devs, sounds fun especially since they seem to be making it into an old school event where people can fight the thargoids and hopefully if enough players join to hjelp in the war jameisom will get fixed and maybe players get access to new stuff to buy and such.
  
  As for it being a mmo...well it is HOWEVER the universe is very wide so you can easily play and not encounter that many players depending on where you are and what you are doing. You tend to encounter players at event hotspots or popular trade routes and station hubs which is where yo can get interdicted and pvp etc.
  
  Also the scope of the ship and feel/look of the game is VASTLY different when using a VR headset when it comes to flying the ship and combat. If you are into ship combat there like no going back to flat screen once you played it in VR. I currently don't have a proper set up for my t16000m stick and only have one stick, if I had a second stick or throttle I would jump in for sure to play this!
