During a recent press trip to Amazon's Irvine studio, we had the chance to check out the new PvP zone coming to New World: Aeternum. And despite not being a huge PvP player, Bradford came away excited to try it more when the MMO relaunches on PC.

Gotta be honest, doesn't sound like very much fun at all, and I know it's to an individuals taste.

I had just over 630 hours into it when I put the game down, and the early PvP was amazing. It was faction versus faction, it was an absolute blast fighting over certain areas, it was chaotic, it was just plain excellent. That carried the rivalries over to fighting for the towns, and so on and so on, those were some of the best parts of the game, the biggest being how it fostered community. That the good part, and some of the toxicity, the minimization of one faction, and some of the other things you typically see in a PvP-centric game.

Going to a zone for total PvP? Not quite sure how that builds community, and I suspect it's something that will be cool for about a week, before people don't bother much with it, because it really won't add a ton to the game.

Faction V Faction (Realm v Realm) is the best PvP there is, once you put an PvP arena/zone in you damage that badly. It will depend on the rewards, if you can get quicker or relatively better awards in the arena then Faction PvP will die out. There is the caveat of Guild/Company control to consider, if that is even still a thing in the game?

Likewise if you have an arena and you bring in quick PvP matching (you sign up and get teleported to PvP scenario map) that will kill of the arena if the rewards are not balanced.

We have seen these gameplay problems so many times its old hat. They seem incompetent at Amazon Games because even if they have realised this (not at all certain they have) they think the benefits of the arena will outweigh the negatives which long term has never panned out.

It’s a shame Amazon still decided to keep males only as a gender option in this “remake”. (sarcasm…)

Territory control will still be a thing in NW:A.

The current game allows anyone in a faction to opt in to open world PvP but I don't know if that will carry over into NW:A.

    I've got to agree.....

I've always been someone who loves PvP, loved the PvP servers in WoW, loved games like DAoC, and for me, UO, where even post Trammel, was part of a few guilds on a couple of shards that would regularly get together for some "scheduled" PvP from Minoc to Yew and back.

For me, PvP was at it's best when it had "meaning" keep's, towns changing hands, faction versus faction. That always felt community building or enhancing, you knew the other side, you could adventure when not in PvP, you had rivals, and enjoyed the spontaneous PvP that just occurred in the game.

While I enjoyed early WoW PvP, it was a very different sort, and I was never an Arena guy, I know it had it's own community, but games that were designed around it (and WoW never was) just had a different feeling.

For me, that's the biggest reason I find this new part of a zone not even remotely interesting. Amazon had a game that ended up being niche, but it scratched an itch, it had a definite PvP feeling, and "end game" (and I admit, I set the game aside as the server community died out, and one faction ended up so overpowering it ended up with pretty much every city). It wasn't perfect, but for people who wanted that community PvP feeling, it was one of the only mainstream choices. Amazon doesn't seem to understand that, and never really worked to improve one of the bigger things that made the game stand apart. It feels like they wanted a much bigger audience, to earn more money (and I can't blame them) that most of their choices are about mainstreaming the game for a bigger audience, and in turn, that cut out a large chunk of the people who did enjoy what it was. I hope it works out for them....

Putting "meaning" in quotes kinda indicates it does not, in fact, have meaning. I do agree that large scale faction PvP is my favorite PvP model, and upping the ante by giving faction wide bonuses for controlling territory sweetens the deal and makes me want to dive in and help out. Random open world ganking with no purpose other than to ruin someone's evening has never been a motivation and I steer wide of those models. While New World had guild vs guild PvP it kinda crossed the line too much into the open world realm in particular with having an open chat channel. Global chat quickly deviled into 24x7 childish trash talk and in-game politics. It quickly soured the whole experience unless you muted the channel. However muting the channel made you feel disconnected from the populace which seems like the opposite of what an MMO is trying to accomplish.

It's like New World built a community based on the biggest online dumpster fire in the world. I don't really miss it nor do I feel compelled to join back up.
