ArcheAge Chronicles, formerly known as ArcheAge 2, was officially announced and unveiled during yesterday's State of Play, and one aspect of the announcement has become a sticking point for interested fans: is it an MMO?

Because the very mention of a 'MMORPG element' might push console players away? What the fack?

Does the console audience actually feel this way? I mean pretty much everything these days has a live service function bootstrapped onto it, this reasoning seems like nonsense.

Console players are very fickle to try "new" things. So in short, yes.

MMO is likely the most misused term in gaming, so whatever.

What I mean by that is it would seem pretty self explanatory, that is it refers to an online service based game, that allows a large/massive number of people to actively play together. Although I've seen so many alternative descriptions, such as that it only means that there's a large number of people on the server, which would make a popular single player online game a MMO (ex: some still try to call Genshin Impact a MMO, which is a single player game, with a bit of optional multiplayer). Then there's those town hub, instanced dungeon games that tend to only allow about four people to play together, yet many people claim they are MMOs, because look at all the people you can see in the town hub. Except that's not an active play zone, the four player dungeons are, and four people most certainly isn't a massively multiplayer experience.

They're likely referring to Japan, which really love their consoles, but treat MMO as a taboo term.

Over there if you pay attention, online game devs make a point to not call their games MMOs, just look at official Japanese statements for Phantasy Star Online 2, and past Japanese statements for Blue Protocol. You will not see them call their games MMOs, but lots of people, or non-Japanese companies handling such games outside of Japan tend to slap MMO on them all the time. Basically everything that is an online game tends to get called a MMO by some people in the West, hence my comment above my response to you.

not only that, the term mmo is so vague that it will 100% anger someone.
for someone 100 people in one place could be considered an mmo while for the next guy it's 1000, you just can't please em.

safer to just call it a morpg or action rpg.

Here's Jake Song, the Exec Producer of the game calling it an MMORPG a year ago.

Might as well just go back to calling them "video games" and leave it at that.

It's MMO-lite, something like Destiny and Neverwinter. Gonna be dungeon/instance based for the most part, from the looks of it.

I loved the first few months of AA. It has a sense of awe and wonderment that I have not experienced since UO.

Even if I can get a few months of that experience in AA2 before it becomes more monetized I'll be quite content.

It's rare to have polished sandboxes that are graphically so impressive so I'll have to take a peek at what they offer.
  • ZandogZandog Member UncommonPosts: 123
Graphically impressive but then again what they can churn out in an online, single player focused action RPG game isn't the same as an MMORPG with something like Ashes of Creation where these graphics and combat mechanics just aren't ready prime time yet. I think people are confused on what Archeage 2: Chronicles will be as it seems very instance and story focused and less about open world player economy, politics and PvP. Since this will be a console release as well, I'm expecting a far less sandbox 'MMO' experience and more of a theme park one.

Every time Goonsquad/SA/DS post salt on Star Citizen, I spend more money on it. Every time a mentally disturbed former backer or Elite CMDR toxic emo comments, I spend more money on it. Every time they refuse to answer why they spend so much time arguing about a game they don't even like, I spend more money on it. Want to watch the world burn because you can't have your way? You got whats coming to you.

They have been known to shutdown their games before what makes you think they won't do it again, hard to put my faith in something like this regardless of what it’s called.
They wouldn’t be the first developers to shut down a game let alone several games.

one must play these things for the “now” not as an investment of time 5 years from now that might not happen.

If accurately describing your game is going to turn off your customers then you have created the wrong game.

I think it depends on your customers....

It's the damn definition, and dilution of what MMORPG used to mean. Those of us who have been around 25 years have a far different meaning than people who are getting involved today. Thing is, both sets of dollars spend, and calling it a lobby based, or MMO-Lite, or whatever probably appeals to a bigger chunk of people.

Us dinosaurs aren't near the majority anymore (if we ever were), and they realize we aren't likely to be core players of any of the new style or self styled MMO's, and such.

Then make a lobby based or mmo lite game.

If you lose customers by accurately describing your game, the issue isn’t the description.  It’s that you made the wrong game.

They want to attract as many people as they can. It's an algorithm thing. They see which words are the most likely to attract the most number of people to their game. It's not about accuracy.

So you would feel the same way if a company sold you a FFA PvP game but called it something else because they wanted to attract as many people as they can? They used an algorithm to see which words were most likely to attract the most number of people to their game.  That would be ok since it’s not about accuracy?

We did but as soon as we had they looked for a bigger player base, first solo gamers then console and finally mobile. They have never been loyal to any player base and will dump the priorities of mobile players as soon as something bigger comes along. Crypto MMOs are likely the next in that sequence.

I dunno.  Crypto games seem so far to be following the path of the 3D TV.  The next big thing… that wasn’t .

    Same with VR gaming actually.

The difference is you don't need special equipment for Crypto, the driving force is the never ending push for new ways for studios to make more money from games. So crypto must come, my real concern is will crypto end up like F2P where players start arguging that you can't make a MMO these days without "Insert new money making method".

Years and years back we reached the point where players were making the F2P case for studios, players had bought into the studio dogma totally. If we get to that point crypto will end up in nearly every online game.
