AMD files a patent for quantum computing

"A team of researchers with AMD have filed a patent application that looks toward a more efficient and reliable quantum computing architecture"

As the device sizes get smaller and smaller, we are running into a brick wall in MOS semiconductors. At 3nm geometry, a wire is about the width of a handful of atoms. We can't get much smaller than that. So quantum computing looks like a possible future. AMD is already moving in that direction.

And it could bring us closer to the quantum computing revolution. A team of researchers from AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) filed a patent for teleportation, though Star Trek fans shouldn't don their plastic Spoc ears in celebration just yet.

Retro Bowl is, easily, one of the most downright enjoyable American football games of the last few years.....

    That makes no sense whatsoever.

Quantum computers can solve special problems which are really hard to impossible to solve with conventional computers.

But they arent better conventional computers. Quite on the contrary they are non-deterministic, since quantum states are so uber fragile and very likely to break during computation. So you have to double check the result and repeat the computation if the quantum state was destroyed before the end result could be measured.

So no, quantum computers cannot be used to speed up regular computing.
