All, no way. Emulation, probably not. Just rose-tinted glasses for most i think.

Possibly, but there's not an old game that I have played that isn't superior to most of the games today.

Still, for me, the only canceled game that I'd like to play again is Vanguard and someone or several someones, are working on it.

And yeah, all canceled games don't need emulation unless there is an audience for them.

If done with great care and respect for it's source material, yes, very much so. But i wouldn't want to see it happen just for the sake of it.

What's the harm in keeping old favorites alive? The fact CoH is still around shows NCSoft was wrong to cancel it. Maybe that's the harm. Those in power don't like to be proven wrong.

That CoH can thrive when operated on a volunteer basis as a non-profit game does not in any way suggest NCSoft was wrong for cancelling it as a for profit one.

The two are entirely different undertakings with the latter having much higher costs and thus needing far more in incoming revenue to justify that expenditure.

I think they are dead for a reason.

In the case of CoH it was still profitable but not to the extent NCSoft was satisfied. Before the game was shut down entirely they briefly tried to offer it on a f2p basis with a cash shop presumably to see if that move would boost revenue sufficiently. As the game ended up closing anyway it apparently wasn't enough in their view.

I think what happened with City of Heroes is ideal, securing the blessing of the IP owners to operate and continue expanding on the game on a non-profit voluntary basis. That way the interests of the IP owner are maintained and those running and playing the game have the security that agreement provides.

Unfortunately most gaming companies are not that magnanimous like Daybreak with P99 servers and NCSoft and City of Heroes. Wish more companies that never intend to start up the old games would let others host it without profit and donations for operating costs.

There should just be some kind of agreement like Homecoming has. None of these MMO's that have been dead for years seem to have any feasible expectation of returning other wise. If people are willing to donate to cover the server cost and all... I doubt every dead MMO is going to have that ability.

All these games could launch classic versions, seasons or TLE's (if they had expansions). It's about all anyone does now and if they aren't even doing that with an IP they own... then let people run emulated servers where they can just accept donations to cover server costs. Just like anything else either there is enough interest to support a dead game or there isn't.

The Homecoming team truly cares about City of Heroes and that has caught the attention of fans and, Im guessing, NCsoft.

But, there is also a LOT that the Homecoming team would like to do but can't because they don't have the budget.

In the years they have been running CoH they have done a tremendous amount of work to not only fix CoH (Paragon did not leave CoH in a good state) but also add new content.

Not every team running an MMO private server is going to be that dedicated, put in that much time and effort for only donations.

I enjoyed CoH homecoming until I started getting dizzy while playing it (only game I have ever had that happen)....I also was told there isnt much to do once you get to level 50.

    Bring back Wildstar!

Wonder why no one mentiones Warhammer: Return of Reckoning as a good example how well it can be done. They got official permission and even add new PvE/PvP content with new zones and new battlegrounds. Got it perma installed and hope in from time to time.

I'd love for Vanguard and Wildstar to get the same treatment.

The vast majority of games would have, at best, less than a dozen people playing them. I don't get the point. If a game actually would have a decent enough population to make a server feel active, a private server usually does end up popping up already.
