Survival games can be a big hit, if you find a style that is not already being served and focus on serving that well.

If PvP is your jam, then Conan Exiles, Rust, Ark had that covered with their own unique and well developed systems.
FV's problem was it wanted to pitch a dungeoneering Pve Style game but mesh it ontop of the usual PvP shenanigans without anything new on either side that was not already being done elswhere.
Their building system had promise but that is about it, their most unique feature, spiral staircases.
The setting had legs to go down the route of a secretworld/Once human otherworldly setting but they leaned too much into the "players are the content" scheme and what ever their pipeline for development was, it was way too slow.
Survival games that dont stand out when they first launch, even in early access, simply get lost in the crowd.
Shame, they had some nice concepts but didnt really execute any of them well.
