Is it still an MMO if your population is playing an online game together in person? Here's a look at one example.

Back in the day I was part of a DAoC guild that was largely located in close physical proximity. We would get together in person at the guild leader's house and do pool parties on occasion. It was nice, and made it all the more bitter when they ruined the game with the ToA expansion and the guild fell apart. I've met several guild members in person in other games over the years. I'm always open for in person contact. Putting a face with a name makes the connection that much stronger. I know people worry about what could happen meeting a stranger in person, but I've always had a positive experience with it. I'm sure part of it is I'm a 6'1" 260lb man and while I do have a dad bod at 51 most of that isn't flab. Not saying that I'm the toughest guy in the world just that folks looking to mug or rob someone typically take a look at me and choose an easier target. I'm way too old and ugly for anyone to want to sexually assault me other than my wife bless her heart. If I were a 20-something female I'm sure I would have a very different attitude just out of safety concerns, and I appreciate that.

I agree with you, I'm a 1,65m and 53Kg female, I have a lot of concerns. Fortunately my boyfriend is big and he goes with me.

Odd that you won't "wax poetic about the Metaverse" but will wax poetic about Pokemon Go.

I think if MMOs do make it out into the real world, it will be with AR/VR HMDs.

Massive gym battles certainly do feel like an MMO experience, but I don't consider Pokemon Go to be an RPG, so it utterly fails by that metric.

A better example would be the epic multi-table games of D&D (or, theoretically, any TTRPG) that sometimes pop up. I seem to recall a nationwide game of D&D one time that offered rewards based on the aggregate results, but I could be dreaming.

I can't see it taking off - maybe a few niche LARPers will take it up as a hobby but the majority of people prefer their gaming sessions from the comfort of their homes. Look at how many MMORPGs have started catering to the single player content - WOW even has 'raids' you can do by yourself to finish the story. I'm not convinced there is a large base of people who want to connect with random strangers these days. The world is becoming increasingly divided, where people find more comfort with those they know and trust.
