imageNew World: Aeternum's Lack Of Cross Progression Is Incredibly Frustrating | MMORPG.com

As New World: Aeternum made its debut on consoles earlier this week, one glaring stood out to Bradford as he booted up the Xbox Series X version: leaving his max-level character behind thanks to a lack of cross progression.

I feel the same way and sadly most of my friends that have also came back to play, have jsut started new console characters which we are having lots of fun with but our old PC characters probably wont get any love anytime soon.

I played last Winter, and only got my character up to the point where I could run one of the expeditions - if I recall it was a mine. So, for me there is lots of unexplored content and I'm not overly attached to my original character.

I had this issue with ESO at some point, though, and don't know if I had the option to link my PC account with the Console at the beginning - possibly user error on my part. However, I know your frustration from that experience.

I can't imagine playing a MMO on an xbox or PS. This is an issue I think most pc gamers dont' remotely care about it and it's probably not worth their effort to implement.

Didn't PC version suffer from dupes exploiting and such? Why would you want those characters on consoles? Fresh start for everyone even playing field is what im looking for and hopefully fewer blatant cheaters in game. Pretty sure console will have different version running than PC anyways

So it's interesting that you say this.

Cross play servers are a thing
PC only servers are a thing
Console only servers are a thing

You can't currently transfer because the console and cross play servers are all FRESH START servers. Eventually you can transfer to them.

I'm playing again, having a blast on a crossplay PC, PS, Xbox server. It's so alive.
Console players can be /very/ dedicated to their games. I think this is a good breath of life.

Imagine playing an MMO with zero cheaters...

Anyways, even on the legacy servers, all that hoopla about the economy being janked due to duping is old news. So easy to make money now anyways.

I also rolled a new character on a crossplay server and am having a blast. It is weird seeing players everywhere i go, from starter to end game zones.

New World had a very rough beginning, going from one issue to another at a rapid pace. Legacy servers exist for people that want to continue with their NW characters. For those that want to start fresh there are NW:A servers for that.

Steam charts are showing healthy numbers for this game right now and I assume that doesn't even account for the console players. Might be worth poking my nose back in just to see the game fully populated again.

I'm playing on a cross play fresh start server for my xbox character and it feels ALIVE. I really just wish I could pick that same character up on my PC when I swap chairs in my house.

It might also make me revisit my level 65 character on El Dorado if I could do so on my console as well. Though that server feels dead by comparison now.

I fired up the game last night and started fresh on a cross play server. The newbie area was definitely popping! Lots of people playing and starting new characters. Only changes I noticed were that they have you choose an "archetype" to start which appears to be totally meaningless given you can just pick up a different weapon and do what you want. The other thing is that now you get partial XP on your off weapon just for having it equipped as opposed to having to actually switch to it in order to get XP for an encounter. That's a welcome change. I'm doing an oddball build with void gauntlet and flail+shield because why not? Seems way more effective than I would expect especially given I'm going full focus on stats. They either significantly buffed damage for tank/healer types or it'll slow WAY down in a few levels. The latter is my bet. Anyway, having fun with it, but the leveling experience has been fun since they did that first major overhaul to leveling. The problem comes in the grind of end game. I'll probably pull the ripcord when I hit that, but I'll enjoy the ride in the meantime.

Archetypes also start out at 50 in a select gathering and profession.  For example, a new Mystic character will have 50 harvesting and 50 alchemy, i think......

I imagine archetypes are a way to give certain players a map in order to help them make and grow a character.

Maybe similar to Elder Scrolls Online’s system that helps them make builds.

Yes I agree that the purpose of the archetypes is to help someone used to a class based system to come in and have some guard rails to get them started. That way they aren't pairing two weapons that have totally different scaling stats and would be problematic at end game like trying to do a fire staff and great axe build just because they thought it looks cool and don't know any better. Once they play the game for a while they can then experiment outside of their original archetype choice when they better understand the rules and how things scale in the game. I can also confirm the archetype choice gives you a 50 point boost to 3 crafting skills. Nothing stops you from working on others and bringing them up. Hitting 50 is pretty easy, so it's a minor boost. Anyway the archetype thing isn't a bad idea, it just isn't super necessary for a veteran of the game to start new. They haven't changed any core mechanics that I've seen.

The lock-on thing is meh. Maybe it helps with a controller but I don't use it at all with KB+mouse.

I have been playing again and enjoying it. The servers are lively, that is for sure. However it is a mix of new players and seasoned vets and we have company's our our server that only want hardcore PVP'ers who have leveled to 65.

99% of the changes are in the early game and leveling. The story is good and I enjoy it a lot and that is why I came back. I studied history and love the mytho-crypto-history on which the game is based.

There is not much for the end game (a raid) and maybe having players again is nice. I think many players are re-rolling on console and will let their PC characters wither.

As much as I want the game to do well and succeed, I see nothing to keep players engaged and playing. Many will leave when the population dries up again or when one faction owns an entire server (our server is green except for one zone or when the PVE endgame repetitiveness wears off. Kudos to AGS for the changes but if they are expecting to keep the population rebound in place, they will be sadly disappointed. The fundamental issues with the game are still present.

At least at this point there are plenty around, that's for sure.

The significant value of archetypes is their starting profession skill bonuses. If you know what you will eventually want to craft it is a good idea to choose the archetype that boosts the related skill. Archetypes also determine your starting armour type if that is something cared about.

The introductory quests on the beach replaced the sole NPC that used to be there with a pair of different people that I found meh in comparison. A bunch of new cinematics were added to boost the story telling aspect. The quest that used to require a group of three despite being buried in a solo quest line no longer does. Those are the main things I've noticed so far. The XP boost to the off weapon was a nice addition.

All of the AGS games are like this, T&L as well. It absolutely sucks, I want to play on my couch sometimes and others at my desk, or maybe even on my steamdeck/laptop while travelling. However, I need different characters on the SAME SERVER. They're also losing out on the sale of the game twice.

Who ever had this idea needs to be fired.

The fact that this game and Throne and Liberty didn't have cross progression is kind of unacceptable in this day and age. It's literally a game where the save is kept on the server there is no reason why cross progression shouldn't have been there day one!

I am currently loving the game, played on pc, but have now moved to Xbox. Having been sat at a pc during the day at work, i'm loving the fact I'm sat my couch playing on a big screen tv using a wireless K+B, to me no different to playing on pc but with the comfort :)

Yeah I agree. Hard to think of a technical reason your PC save couldn't be loaded on your console given they clearly store the same data. It's confusing.
