So many aspects of the linked article have already been proven false such as the mass layoffs of 100-150 people not to mention that CIG will hit an even higher milestone of funding this year. Yes the game has taken too long and been managed poorly many years, but to make it sound like the game is in trouble based on that article or that they do not want the anything to come out to receive unlimited funding is just sensationalism for clicks.

    So ..delusional.

Not having miss management on a ..what? 1 billion in free cash is hard to achieve. Especially after years and years of .. delays.

Anyway! I saw the ..2026 trailer release for S42. What a hot garbage of .. at least a trailer. If the game is anything like in the trailer, will be a beautiful mess. And I will be happy, because if S42 will be a failure, SC will be too ...when released........in ..... 2036.

If this launches and that's a big if. I wonder if after 12+ years this can meet any of the fans expectations. Chris has hyped this game up for so long I can't imagine it will ever in reality be able to be anything more than an average FPS. What I'm looking forward to is seeing people like Mr. Bacon doing mental gymnastics attempting to justify the mediocre and outdated gameplay. Or maybe that effort will be placed on trying to explain why it is delayed to 2027 haha.

I can't wait for them to release SQ42 then a month later saying they have to end SC's development.

I think they'll make the release date - They'll release it in "chapters" as a part of the coverup. We'll get a 2 hour chapter after "only" 14 years - with the hopes of bringing even more funding in with the sale of imaginary ships going at several hundred dollars a piece.

even gamers aren't dumb enough to keep funding a game for 14 years. Of course it was going to dry up eventually with this vaporware never seeing the light of day. They wont make the 2026 release date and pretty much everyone knows that. This SC saga is actually pretty funny at this point. This is beyond even derek smart and duke nukem forever territory now. I feel bad for folks that actually put real money into expecting a finished product at some point. If they enjoyed what they got then good for them i guess. As much as i'd LOVE to see a wing commander type game these days....even if this releases in 2026 i'm gonna pass just out of principle.

Not really. It took DNF 15 years to release so that gives SC another 2 year window.

Not really. It took DNF 15 years to release so that gives SC another 2 year window.

The problem comparing this to Duke Nukem Forever is that DNF was not in full active development all those years.
It was being developed by 3D Realms for 7 years then either had a skeleton crew or no development at all for 6 years then Gearbox bought it and finished it in a year.

A good comparison is that DNF was taking so long because 3D Realms co-founder George Broussard became obsessed with new technology and had no clear goal for the game's development.

I'll go out on a limb here and predict the launch window for SQ42 will slip again. The employees who are forced to work overtime without pay will wait at least 3 more years to get their time back, if they are still employed and the company doesn't fold before then.

CIG likes whales, but to their employees they are a stingy little minnow.

It seems like every year they say it'll be out next year. Eventually, people will stop donating money for something that seems like it will never happen. I participated in the original Kickstarter, but I've long since given up hope that this thing will eventually release.

    Here's my take:

They have ZERO financial incentive to "release' Star Citizen, as if anything it might cause their funding to slow.  But SQ42 is different as it's a single player game and it doesn't have the ability to buy/sell hundreds of pixel spaceships. It originally came bundled with SC but since has been spun off to be it's own thing.  I think this represents one of the few NEW revenue streams for CIG.  This is also why Max was talking about console versions of SQ42 (puke).  When they launch it (or in the months leading to it) they will potentially see a groundswell of interest and income.

You can't really be a SQ42 whale.  As of now I do not think you can even buy the game.  I envision them doing a huge PR push as this gets closer and starting to sell this again so they (CIG) have an actual financial stake in getting it to launch.

Three years to polish A "feature complete" game is pretty ridiculous honestly. I already discussed my reaction to the trailer and gameplay in Bacon's separate post.

It looks nice but gameplay trumps visuals for me and so far it looks mediocre in that regard. I also really didn't like how the game starts(before the battle).

It doesn't look like a "Dream game" from what was shown.

Yep. I am a big fan of Chris Roberts, but he really is his own worst enemy. Proven again and again.

He needs to hand off management to people that are good at it and stick to game design. That's what he's good at.

He needs someone at the top above him, who smacks him down, forces deadlines and limits features to get a game finished and out of the door. That's how his Wing Commander games got out of the door and released in time back in the day.!

Get a base game finished and out of the door. Then you can add more stuff later on.

Both Star Citizen and SQ42 have suffered endless feature creep and Chris Robert's obsession with perfection.

The perfect game doesn't exist! That's why he needs a competent manager above him who reigns him in.

"They have ZERO financial incentive to "release' Star Citizen, as if anything it might cause their funding to slow."

When a game releases then there are expectations....Stay in alpha forever, you always have that excuse and there are no expectations.....TO me, they are just creating a bigger and bigger Frankenstein and I dont see how they would recoop this money if they released it...It pretty much has to stay as an alpha or beta.

Here is the beauty of the schem...err I mean business model.

There is nothing to recoup except the money they borrowed from their investors, which it looks like they'll be selling SQ42 just in time for when the bill comes due.

They'll launch Day 1 basically debt free, so any money earned is pure profit after day to day operating expenses and the 3B's are covered.

They could decide to reinvest in further game development or they could just milk it dry slowly over the years.

There is an incentive to get server meshing working on a large scale so they can license the one of a kind tech.  And the only way to demonstrate it works is to get it working in SC.

It's the usual click-bait journos unicorn drama article to make the jaded masses who are too ignorant or lazy about game dev to have a chance to circle jerk and feel less empty :D

Meanwhile the truth is that SC keeps getting major important updates, Squadron 42 is shaping to be the best modern Wing Commander game one could ever dream of while CIG is on their way to break yet another funding record. Good times. Rinse & Repeat.   B)

Unlikely. Server meshing is a combination of lot of different techs, and many of them only work with a compatible server. RSI might be able to detach some small parts of their tech and license those, but detaching server meshing for licensing isn't realistic, they'd need to license their whole server.

At this point RSI's server is really exotic combination of different techs that only make sense for a very specific type of game. Also it's had more than a decade of additions by devs who have been designing it to work only for their use in their own game, which would it make hard for anyone else to use.

I doubt RSI has any intention to try to license their servers or server meshing.

Tech can be licensed and adapted to similar projects, even if they were themselves to develop a new project. SM is more akin to the logic of the game world being formed by containers and streaming tech as players move, which is where the base of SM kicks in to use those to also transition a server simulation hand-over.

But yes for an in-house engine, it will always be developed to the specific game needs, so it only is useful if it can be re-used for similar goals. And doing any licensing would also imply support & maintenance, which would require dev resources to maintain. Which is why I think this will not going to happen unless it's CIG themselves developing/publishing a new title.

There is one example of licensing that was done years ago, the web platform stuff, the Issue Countil (issue tracker) was licensed by turbulent, it's used in some games including an ubisoft one.

Well… either I FINALLY get to play my dream game in 2 years, I FINALLY get to kill all hope because it’s hot garbage, or I get to hear Babs give more excuses because they yet again miss the date.

We will see. 1 in 3 chance from my point of view is not too bad odds.
