Nick is back with his tongue-in-cheek column all about how every theme park MMO is just a World of Warcraft clone in disguise. This time he looks at ArenaNet's excellent MMO, Guild Wars 2.

That and the literal disclaimer at the bottom stating point blank that this is meant to "not be taken seriously," yea.

Scot, he just said that you're not to be taken seriously, and some rude things about "yo momma" I won't repeat (1)

1: Due to endemic reading comprehension issues, this may be the wrong forum for "not to be taken seriously".

    Oh my gosh.

    -facepalm

Let me try this again. In spite of the column name and the disclaimer I cannot honestly tell if this is satire or not because frankly so many people express this sort of opinion and they're dead serious.

I guess I shouldn't try and post when I only have a few minutes between meetings and can't explain myself in detail.

Yeah, the GW series and WoW clone. Right. :p

(Amazing games, but I don't really like 2 as much as 1)

GW2's UI is enough to make me never want to touch the game again. Maaaaybe it's just the art style and animations....and the combat. I don't know, it just might be the whole game honestly. The mounts might be the only positive I can think of, funnily enough.

I actually knew what you meant, but still want to point at the bottom disclaimer and tag! Bwahaha....ha

City of Heroes predates World of Warcraft so it would be fair to say it's a CoH clone.

and WoW is a EQ clone....They dumbed it down, gave it cartoonish graphics, made everything for the masses, and had a company with billions at its disposal to market and hype the game like no one else ever could....It arrived at a perfect time and you have to give them credit for that....Maybe someone else should look at the games today and take the same approach?...Find a more hardcore game and dumb it down...maybe Eve Online or Dark Souls.

On a serious note, you could see the effect of WoW on GW2. GW was very much its own game, from a time when each MMO had its own approach to what was best about MMORPG's. WoW did not just usher in WoW clones, it brought in the idea there was a "best" way to make a MMO, that perhaps more than trying to follow WoW itself was a bigger handicap for MMO evolution.

Anything, anywhere tagged as tongue in cheek has a little bit of truth hidden behind it. What I find amazing is that 20 years after it's release, the mere mention of WoW clones still triggers people from both sides of the argument. Yes, we all know that WoW wasn't the first MMO, and we also know that it took elements from {insert your favorite pre 2004 MMO here}.

In some ways WoW became the "best" way to make a MMO because it put so much money into making the game (supposedly 63M) compared to previous MMORPG's. So trying to copy the WoW template with less money as so many did was bound to not reach the hights of the original.

ESO is quite WoW like, they spent a shed load and they have a really solid MMORPG, if you are going to try to copy WoW get your wallet out.

Wake me up when you do a FFXIV edition of this, so you actually have to play FFXIV, and then advertise FFXIV.

GW 2 isn't what it is because of WoW. ANet could've easily went with "GW, the modern engine version". But people requested the open world. People requested the ability to jump. People requested races(not as much as others, but it is there).

Would I like GW 1, the modern engine version? ... let me correct that. I would LOVE that. But it is what it is. And GW 2 is fair enough, just not really for me.

This post is ridiculous and very inaccurate. The fact that this person is even discussing dragons, shows you all you need to know. Years ago, we saw the end of dragons. I would love to see a new dragon emerge, to be honest, because we haven't seen them for quite some time.
