Nintendo is far less concerned about shutting Palworld down than just getting a piece of the pie. Something tells me what they really want is to just get a license fee, preferably annually, and call it good. It will not surprise me if this settles out of court for an "undisclosed amount".

Surprised to see such a low dollar amount being sought, wouldn't think 65K would be worth the effort unless Nintendo is also seeking that Pocket Pair pay their attorney fees as well.

They are also seeking an injunction that could possibly shut down Palworld permanently.

Also, the patents were filed in 2021 and then renewed in 2024.

And the patents are complete bullshit. One of the patents is taming a creature then riding the tamed creature as a mount in a virtual world.

Oh no! Maybe Nintendo will come after Albion Online and Guild Wars 2 next.

That is complete bullshit; how the frick does one patent a fairly common video game mechanic....?

Also how on earth can someone expect to license/patent the very act of doing something?? That's like some jackass trying to charge someone when they pick up a stray cat and pet it, it's absurd.

I have been told Nintendo goes after anyone infringing on their IP's, but this does follow the golden law of suing for patent infringement, you wait until it is a success, then you wait till it is a really big success, then you sue.

It just means Nintendo is grasping at straws and stretching it a bit with this lawsuit. It probably won't go anywhere and just settles out of court.

If you look at previous lawsuits and other current more recent ones, like that youtuber. The damages amounts are way higher.

I just see this lawsuit more like a symbolic one, with Nintendo trying to make a statement of some sorts.

This has been debunked already. Just some overzealous angry Pokemon fans that spread it at the time.

Either way. The AI train cannot be stopped any way. It's coming and you can bet that large Corpo's like EA, Ubisoft and TenCent will be at the forefront to make use of it, if it means they can fire more people and put more cash in their investors pockets.

Maybe with AI we can get game out in less than 15 years with a 5 year EA period and still have bugs

AI can make it cheaper to mass-produce bad artwork, but if you try to apply it to fixing bugs in code, it's going to create a lot more bugs than it fixes.

I'm sure the main patent they are suing for it basically the patent to have a player character launch a fighting character that fights. Which means any copycat that has a similar feature to pokeballs is not able to be used by anyone.below is the patent I'm talking about held by Nintendo.

STORAGE MEDIUM STORING GAME PROGRAM, GAME SYSTEM, GAME APPARATUS, AND GAME PROCESSING METHOD
    Publication number: 20240367050
Abstract: In a first mode, an aiming direction in a virtual space is determined based on a second operation input, and a player character is caused to launch, in the aiming direction, an item that affects a field character disposed on a field in the virtual space, based on a third operation input. In a second mode, the aiming direction is determined, based on the second operation input, and the player character is caused to launch, in the aiming direction, a fighting character that fights, based on the third operation input.
    Type: Application
    Filed: July 18, 2024
    Publication date: November 7, 2024
Applicants: NINTENDO CO., LTD., The Pokémon Company
    Inventor: Kazumasa IWAO

I remember hearing early on it was the capturing with a spherical object that was the crux of the argument. They have to be narrow in their complaint because as others pointed out, capturing an animal and turning it into a mount, is basically most games in existence (RPGS).

This is a bogus patent that can't hold up in court and Nintendo knows it.
And they only try to file it this year ROFLMAO!

What about the Digimon and Persona games? They go back as far as the earliest Pokemon games.

What about TemTem?  There are plenty of other Pokemon copy cats out there.

Is Nintendo now planning to go after all of them? Good luck with that!

Bottom line is. Launching a fighting pet/character in battle is nothing unique.
We can go back as far as First Edition Dungeons and Dragons, which predates the first Pokemon game by 20+ years.
And from that all modern (MMO)RPG's are derived from D&D's RPG system.
Necromancer, Summoner, Hunter, Warlock, etc, etc.

It's seriously one of the most idiotic patents I have seen so far this year.

It's a Japanese patent with a lawsuit filed in Japan against another Japanese company. I can't find an instance of Nintendo ever losing a patent suit in Japan ever. Nintendo holds more social and and cultural value in Nintendo than does Pocket Pair. PP will get rolled.

It isn't fair and it shouldn't be this way, but I'd put good odds on that outcome.

Word on the street (reddit rumormill) is that this is particularly about an opportunity for Nintendo to take a shot at Sony. I can't find evidence of that, so it's probably total bull, but also there is no love lost between the two of them.

Too bad about this because I like Palworld. I like Ark and this was like Poke-Ark.

Digimon is also Japanese and came out in the same year as Pokemon. 1997.

Persona franchise is also Japanese and even older and the first computer game also launched in 1997.

So Bandai and Sega should also be concerned if Nintendo is able to win with such ridiculous patent.

Especially Digimon most closely resembles Pokemon, with succesful games and trading card games.

I also completely forgot about Yokai Watch, which is a popular franchise in Japan and is also be considered a Pokemon clone, where fighting characters are stored in medals.

So again, even in Japan this patent should not be possible as its so generic, it applies to any RPG game that has a pet class.

There are multiple sub patents off the main which go into much finer detail on the actual mechanics which narrows it down to the throwing of sphere shaped objects to capture pets. (Along with some other gameplay mechanics)

Other games get around this by using other geometric shapes and so far haven't been sued by Nintendo.

Then Palworld can, in worst case, just change the shape of their spheres. Lawsuit over.

Remember, Palworld releaed in 2023 and this patent was filed by Nintendo just months ago in July 2024.

So it really is, what you could consider, a harassment patent and Palworld studio can use that in their defense. Since Pokemon is 27 years old, so is Digimon and Yokai Watch has also been around for quite a long time as well.  TemTem is 5+ years old.  So why file the patent now and not many years ago, if Nintendo was so concerned. That should be their defense.

I agree. Game patents are bad and stifle the industry. Also, don't forget Dragon Quest.

"This is Sony. Please buy our PS5Pro because we gotta recoup Concord! FUuuu.......!" Hahaha

Palworld's launch on PS5 is topping the charts beating Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero and ReFantazio.

It shouldn't be possible, even in Japan! Since there are other franchises like Digimon that are just as old as Pokémon.

Game mechanics like this should not be allowed to be patented. It's ridiculous and would set a horrible precedent and stifle game development.

Just imagine what would happen when behemoths like TenCent started filing patents like this.

That would pretty much be the end of Indie game development. As no small developer would dare developing a game anymore, out of fear of being sued!

I like Nintendo, but with these sudden patent filings this summer... they are going in a wrong and dark direction in my opinion.

PS. Again, if you look at all the competing games out there, then no one can deny that TemTem would be the worst defender as it literally is a carbon copy of Pokemon, with 3 starters, gym battles, etc.

That game is over 5 years old now and Nintendo didn't bat an eye.

I'm sure the main patent they are suing for it basically the patent to have a player character launch a fighting character that fights. Which means any copycat that has a similar feature to pokeballs is not able to be used by anyone.below is the patent I'm talking about held by Nintendo.
