I mean since the release of Aeternum the game has averaged about 20k concurrent players. That's a pretty healthy number if not WoW numbers (but what is?). Seems like they've done something right. Whether the population numbers will hold over time remains to be seen, but this is the first 3-month steady block of players they've had over 10k average players since the game launched. I don't know that we can say they're out of the woods, but seems like the game has managed to come off life support at least. Serious but stable condition we'll call it.
This article assumes that AGS still treats NW like a proper MMORPG with an ongoing development cycle and regular content updates.
I believe the rebranding towards "ARPG" means they consider this game "finished". It'll now receive life-support with seasons (kinda like Diablo 4, Division 2 or Destiny 2). With a bit of luck, we will get another paid expansion every 2-3 years. But that's probably all we can expect until the inevitable mobile re-re-release.

In the old days a MMORPG could come back from getting a bad name at launch, like Anarchy Online, today that is very difficult to do. FFXIV managed it, but they rebuilt the game from the ground up, NW has just tweaked and added and seems to depend far too much on crafting of one sort or another in my eyes. Expect to see Aeternum Unchained at some stage, its sad really as it promised so much and we will get the next AAA Western MMO who knows when.
Once again another MMORPG that is killed not by the devs but by the community itself. It’s the same formula every. Single. Time.
Small group of high play time. Elitist top end players are the most vocal. They are the ones who get listened too and thus the game gets shaped and destroyed to cater to the 1%
Just look at the roadmap. It literally doesn’t cover a single problem that the average player faces in NW. not a single one.
All they are doing is making the echo chamber even smaller.

Oh, it is totally Amazons fault. War participation has been a hot topic since the beginning. Eventually, just like the legacy servers, all the wars/territory will belong to the same 4 or 5 companies and the new servers, if that. The only way to fix it really would be to do away with the system completely....other than that, i really dont have good solution. Wars in new world are pure esport now, and the warring companies think it is the best thing ever. They obviously never did relic raids in daoc. To each their own i guess.
I was a tester for New World and have played off and on since. I have over 500 hours in game. I have played every major evolution, launch, release, etc.... of the game since the beginning. While the game itself is in a better state now (story, flow, etc...), the community is full of the 1% elitists unlike anything I have seen except for mythics in WOW. Trying to find a guild on one of these new servers has been comical. Every guild is an elitist PVP'er guild of elitist raiders. They want daily logins, and treat it like a job. Meanwhile, casual everyday players are left with nothing and then leave. On some servers one guild holds almost everything. These are broken systems and have been since launch and AGS knows it but they do not know how to fix it (or fail to completely misunderstand their playerbase that they are either ignorant or blind).
The recent update is like a shot of adrenaline into a dying man - the end result will be the same, it will just take longer to get there.

Like…. You kind of just proved my point. I brought in myself and 3 other friends. We have the type of friend group where I’m usually the one who’s like yeah guys let’s try this.
So we all went.
I’ve never even done a war. Never asked to do a war and neither did a single friend of mine. We all left recently and quit.
Out of our group we never spoke about wars once (in other words it’s not a problem to us). We have a huge list of other complaints though.

Why don’t the casual every day players form their own guild?
Heck you can form one, invite people who will help out and just keep it chill.
When you have highly motivated and ambitious people you have to expect that they will want to play with the same people.
Then the problem is that the casual players aren’t usually motivated enough to make a casual guild “happen.”
You need to get several casual players together to do the minimum amount of work to make “something happen.

I only had one shorter MMO experience than New World and that was FFXIV (15 minutes was enough of that).....My nephew didnt even last 2 hours in NW before quitting.

IMO you both did yourself a disservice by quitting far too soon. I spent $20 on a Steam sale and got a good 6+ months of entertainment before deciding long term it wasn't going to be for me.
I enjoyed leveling up a couple of characters, gearing them all out but after completing the first expansion / seasonal pass I could see the game wasn't going in a direction I cared for and moved on.

They do, I was in a casual guild which tried to take on challenging the established guilds in PVP but the attempt was almost comical in its failure.
The try hards totally dominate in NWs PVP design model and IMO there really isn't any room for the casual PVPer, unless something changed with the latest expansion.
Contrast that with DAOC where I could more casually benefit from the zerg's protection while occasionally interacting or supporting the efforts of the 8 man power groups.
There's nothing like this in NW, no keep taking to access so our realm could access Darkness Falls, which the power gamers actually needed help from the more casual players to take over on a regular basis.
EVE Online eventually set up a similar co-dependence in 0.0 between the warriors and the Krabs.
We PVE'ers would stay behind to maintain the sovereignty settings in the home worlds while the warriors were out on the front lines fighting for "peace in our time."

Never had bugs really. I can understand them being there though. I've only really played heavily just shy of the revamp. Hard as hell. Never had invites, or even a conversation. So I'm only solo. Max level, but stuff 10-15 levels lower insanely hard, even with bought ah gear and good skill levels. Revamp though made my graphics so much worse, and just logging in and seeing them pisses me off enough to dc.

Yeah my nephew quitting took my desire to play it solo down to 0.....I tried for another 2 weeks or so but just wasnt fun solo....Also the towns were so laggy I could barely even move....It was frustrating for me to have people just sit around town and doing nothing....It made me think there must not be anything to d oin end game because they are all here doing nothing.

There first seasonal server is a PvP one. Perhaps if that goes over well they'll make a PvP server permanently available.
