Marvel Rivals has proved nothing so far. Its been what, a week or two. Sure its going to be a hugely popular release but what's the financials look like, the earning reports, etc....? We are a long way away from declaring it a rousing success. Popular, yes. Overwatch was game of the year in 2018 and now look at it.

As to Ybarra's point, yes the characters design and skills are a direct copy in some cases and directly influenced in others from overwatch. My 14 year old son who plays both and I had a long discussion and experimenting with both games and we are not industry experts. Its so obvious.

Netease is copying and re-skinning and Ybarra's right. Hypocritical or not does not matter to me but he is right. The similarities are so very close. But we cannot use the popularity of a game to say it will be successful, not yet. I think more importantly Rivals may change how gamers view seasons and battlepasses. Thats my hope.

It's better received early on than some recent hero shooters were, that's for sure. That alone suggests it may be more promising. If Ybarra thinks some sort of legitimate complaint can be brought forth they'd best get on it. Bitching about it won't do anything.

It is a legitimately fun game, and while yes, there are many things that are extremely similar between the two, Marvel Rivals has also begun to set itself apart with their own ideas, such as shifting and destructible environments, as well as hinting at potentially delivering on PVE modes, which Blizzard failed to do.

Then there's the part where the game was co-developed by an American studio based in Seattle under the direction of Thaddeus Sasser who has a 20 year long history of developing AAA shooters.

A fun game is a fun game, and most games take ideas from other games and iterate on them. that's just the way things go.

It's funny hearing someone from Blizzard complaining about another company copying ideas for a new game.  Dripping with irony and hypocrisy.

“Ybarra’s critique has backfired, creating questions about Blizzard’s own ability to truly innovate”

One could argue that all of Blizzard’s innovators were canceled a few years ago

Didn't Netease make Diablo Immortal for Blizzard? He must have forgot that. He also must have forgot that Warcraft = Warhammer and Starcraft = Warhammer 40k.

What are you blathering about? Does ripping their break out title World of Warcraft off lock stock and barrel from Game Workshop's Warhammer make them shameless copycats? Oh wait, yeah it sure as fuck does. Carry on. :D

Every single game they've made is a copycat of more original titles. They're fun games, but please.

Edit: Also, Blizz puts more effort into Diablo Immortal, for obvious reasons, than they do Diablo 4. Holiday events for D4 have been pathetic. Diablo Immortal at least offered a much more standard event.

And Warhammer ripped off LotR and Tolkien ripped off folk tales and mythology.

Starcraft is a Starship Troopers rip off, not a WH40K rip off.

Everyone has copied off someone else.

Just because they both have Star in their names doesn't mean its a rip off. Maybe an inspired by.

i always thought it was Ender's Game inspired myself. Just realized i haven't read that in forever

No one enjoys when someone else takes their good idea and does them one better so bound to be some sour grapes.

Also it's pretty popular here in the West to accuse any product made by the Chinese to be derivative and of lower quality, even though that isn't necessarily the case these days.

This new entry may just be another flash in the pan or eventually dethrone the current champion and take the title, only time will tell.

I was reminded of that last night. The show had a heroine who has to save the world she's dropped into. She meets various people and creatures and some of them join her as companions. She goes through different lands defeating enemies or solving problems and eventually gets the main quest: get a specific drop from a specific boss.

She does eventually defeat the boss and gets the treasured drop, now the ending of the main quest starts to play and (spoilers redacted).

This is so similar to so many RPG's that it seems rote by now. Unsung hero saves the world yet again by defeating the end boss, yadda yadda.

    L. Frank Baum wrote that, seeking to have a new, American mythology.  Along with the ten or so other books in the series.
