Please oh please let this game be good. I've already been let down and sorely disappointed with other MMO's still in development. LOTR is now the only MMO Im following these days.
Games ive crossed off my watch list...
Vanguard - SOE, nuff said
Age of Conan - many were excited by the game and setting but there were a few reviews out there saw a bland boring WoW clone.
Star Trek - one faction, stuck with starfleet, level-based, and no pvp....snooze
Roma Victor - I love crafting and non-combat roles (which this game plenty of) but this game is so painfully ugly to look at. I cant even bring myself to continue beta testing it due to the really bad graphics
Fallen Earth - as you can see by my logo, Im a huge fan of Fallout games so this MMO grabbed my attention early on. However I learned recently it will be a FPS and not the classic rpg combat so no thanks
Dark and Light - broken promises and an empty shell of a game.
If LOTR is even halfway decent I'l be happy. I have no choice anyway. I just wish we could get a developer out there to design a game that appealed to folks like me...sandbox, skill based, non-combat roles (NOT a secondary skill) and a huge non-instanced world to explore.
I think I read somewhere that LOTR will be 1/3 the size of WoW. Thats disappointing because I always felt WoW was too small and confined
Comments
While I have my hopes set on LotRO I do see a few other games that look like a lot of fun.
Vanguard - Yeah, SOE kills it. Could possibly still be good but I don't want anything to do with SOE.
Age of Conan - From what I've it looks to be nothing like WoW. The combat, if it comes out right, could be incredibly fun. Not to mention the player built cities and seige warfare.
Star Trek - Haven't looked into this one.
Fallen Earth - Same.
Roma Victor - I'm with you on this one.
Dark and Light - Vaporware. Ungodly horrible.
Warhammer Online - Here's one I'll be keeping an eye on.
But here's the problem. The type of game you want isn't what LotRO will be. LotRO is level-based, adventuring based (not a sandbox), and crafting is a secondary skill everyone will have access to.
LotRO will be 60% the size of WoW at launch. But if you take into account that a lot of the space in WoW is taken up by race starting zones then it really isn't much smaller.
Lord of the Rings Online certainly looks like it will be a great game. The developers seem so sweet compared to a certain other unnamed company *cough*. This is the game I look forward to most.
Pirates of the Burning Sea is very intriguing.
Vanguard geez those guys are so enthusiastic about their game. I always root for the underdog. Since I found myself in a recent SWG thread plotting a triumphant return on a (fantasy) Pre_Cu server....maybe I'm weak and I'll slink in on this one anyway.
If any of the above is satisified in a online rpg, I will probably lose all my friends and drop out of school.
Wow dude, you make the saying "Don't judge a book by its cover" seem like nothing! You have crossed all those games of your list to even consider?
Vanguard - Not retail yet, but because of the whole "I hate SOE bandwagon" you're not even going to look at it. Real origonal.
Star Trek - The game is in pre-production IE: Not even in alpha testing.
Conan - Yeah, because all game reviewers (Especially for MMORPGs) are 100% acurate. You even said yourself there are a 'few' reviews out for this game that doesn't even have any kind of public beta yet...
I feel sorry for Developers, Authors, Directors, etc... who have to make entertainment for people like you 0.o

Tested: SWG, Sims, EVE, CoH, RO, Darkages, Neocron, AO, Lineage 2, ATITD 2, AC 2, WoW, MxO, LotRO, Armada Online, VsoH
Playing: WoW
Waiting for: StO
But I haven't seen a beta for it or something, so I don't lost my hope in this game.
Another game I've an eye on is The Chronicles of Spellborn, it got pretty unique graphics and style. That one looks very promising.
Which MMORPG will win the battle to be my next MMORPG .
who knew

Actually its called ethics, something i believe in and something SOE lacks. SOE is banned along with all Sony products from my house. I tossed out all my dvd's made by them. I wont go to any movie made by them, no matter how much I want to see it (including the Davinci Code). SOE stole my money, lied to me repeatedly, and secretly developed a new game with my money. They can go to hell.
Star Trek - The game is in pre-production IE: Not even in alpha testing.
And your point is ? I see all I need to know to make an informed decision to avoid this stinker. Now if Perpetual were to get smart and make some changes then yeah I'd come take a look. If they announce the romulans are a playable faction, pvp will be meaningful, and I can play a sandbox style independent class and not be locked in to the federation and led by meaningless quests I'd be glad to play. But as of now, no Im not interested in playing another IP game from some company trying to cash in on the name.

I read a review from a few independent sources and I also got to chat with a buddy (Frat brother) who attended E3 about the game. His take basically was whats all the excitement about ? He didnt see anything new or impressive about the game. Most of the hype he attributed to the conan name and NOT the game itself.
I feel sorry for Developers, Authors, Directors, etc... who have to make entertainment for people like you 0.o
Age of Conan like WoW? Well I've never played WoW so is there some kind of trial thing for it? I hope LOTRO will be good as well but I still haven't been invited to the beta testing yet! I'm also waiting for Warhammer Online to select me, I've been waiting for ages for a place in the beta testings.

Nope, in the end all the money climbs the corporate ladder and into the hands of Sony. They hired Smedley. They allow Smedley to do his dirty deeds unpunished. They let Sony BMG plant stuff on our computers. Their all just as bad.
It would be like telling me its okay to shake a murderer's right hand because it was the left hand that did the stabbing. Sorry but it all comes from the same evil head.
From what you are describing Conan seems most like what you are looking for. It will be the most sandboxy of the new MMO's I believe.
Also SOE is only publishing the game and distributing it. They have no say whatsoever on the development or release of the game. Although I can understand your boycott of anything Sony, in this case, they really aren't involved with the game except for making sure its on store shelves.

As if Turbine is aby better? Turbines ineptness is allmost better documented than SoEs.
Oh I agree, Turbine has a lousy track record.
I'm thinking that Turbine's past failures might be a factor in making LOTR a better game. Over at http://www.mmogchart.com/ there's a review on LOTR from E3. The guy running the site thinks since DDO was a failure, Turbine is sinking more money into LOTR. They simply cant afford another major IP failure.
Trust me, Im no fanboi of Turbine. Im crossing my fingers they do justice to this license.
I don't know, LoTR seems like kind of a tough sell for Turbine, tougher than DDO. With DDO they had an IP that they still have a bit of freedom in dealing with. With LoTR they are relying on maybe the most rabidly-loyal-to-the-books fanbase out there. They're also dealing with a world that has been pretty much completely explored in the books and a story that's already been completely told in the books. I do not envy the people who have to develop the content for this game.
All the same though, my two cents is that WAR looks awesome, but it's also pretty far away.
I'm kind of interested in playing Gods and Heroes.
I don't know why but SOE aside, I have a bad feeling about Vanguard, and about Conan as well, though I can't really explain why.
Pirates of the Burning Sea looks good, and it may be the next to win my dollars, but again, it's a little far off.
less. They'll release the rest of the space in expansion packs,
expansion packs that actually have content thank god, instead of those
guys at SOE who put out a new expansion every 2 weeks it seems like.
LOTR ftw
Well... if its sandbox you crave i really see but one choice, EvE.
Funny, how no one here mentions the most polished and fun looking up and coming mmo... Tabula Rasa... guess you guys just want your goblins and your dice lol...

I don't know how anyone could be excited about a game brought to us by the same people that couldn't do a D&D MMO justice. I mean, that's almost as inexcusable as botching a star wars MMO Seriously, if the game is at all like DDO it is going to suck.
I think the comment about AOC being a WoW clone is pretty ignorant. You surely haven't looked at the game for more than a few seconds if you believe that to be the case.... Beyond being massively Multiplayer, I really cant come up with any similarities to WoW. The combat is different, the PvP is different, the PvE is different, the classes are different... seriously, how is AoC a WoW clone... in any way at all?
As far as not buying vanguard because of the SOE involvement.. I think it would be silly to buy a game published by someone who has ruined a few games you played in the past, and basically treated you like crap when you were a customer of theirs. I can certainly understand and respect anyone deciding not to give SOE their money, just like the people on the WAR forums who won't deal with EA... I have never had a problem with them myself, but I wouldn't suggest someone was "jumping on the bandwagon" if they didn't want to deal with them. I have read all the bad things about them, just like SOE... There is certainly enough evidence out there to lead me to believe the person complaining about them just might be telling the truth.
