Originally posted by Tonks Its pretty epensive to buy and you pay every month, so i was wondering if its worth the money? please answer ^^
If you don't like soloing and you like forced grouping then this game is for you. I bought it a couple days ago and already cancelled the account...It's getting chilly where I live...should have just used that money as fuel for a fire instead of wasting it on FFXI. And people it's my opinion...don't come and try and gripe and whine at me if you like the game. If you like it, fine, I don't, the dude asked for opinions...not flames.

Both of those definitley is in the game. You certainly get more exp in grouping, although it's not forced. I really don't understand whats wrong with that, i mean if i wanted to solo i'd get a single player game. But all in oppinion. I enjoy FFXI alot so far.
With only 2 somewhat effective solo classes [red mage and bard [not too sure on bard but I heard they are good soloers]] it kind of forces you to group but grouping is SOOOOOOO easy. making a large group with all english speaking people is SOOOOOOOO hard. Get ready to macro Japanese phrases. gamefaqs.com has a whole phrase dictionary.

Most of the japanese are higher levels so not too big of a problem. If they released the game at the same time as the japanse it would be mass chaos so im glad they released it early to them.
I've played the game for a month and a few days, and I saw maybe less than 5 Japs in my party, just put English in party options, you'll be fine, even if you are without it, but in case ^-^
Do they have a trial system? most games seem to offer free trials for a few days or weeks or even a month, if it does go gove it a try. While people will give their opinions your's in the only one that counts right? Some people (well my bro) said i was a retard for playing Lineage, due to various reasons i didn't listen and turned out to be my top3 favourite games ever.... give it a go, it might be your fav.

I have played many differen't MMORPG's. Including Everquest, DAoC, SWG (including beta), Ultima Online etc.
The reason I have played so many is because I love RPG's, and I have been personally hunting for one that grabbed me. Out of all of those listed above, only EQ came close, but I think it was because when I first started playing EQ, I invested $100 bucks into the game and all of its expansions. So with that kind of money involved, I played for awhile.
So here I am still searching, a couple of weeks ago I finally took the plunge and got FFXI. Yes there are a few things I would do differently, but this one grabbed me and pulled me in. I am personally having a blast with it and I am finally glad I was able to /cancel other accounts. The only catch with this game is its not a "1 player" game. You will have to socialize with other people, group with others, and ultimatly make friends. If that poses a problem for you, then I would pass. This is not a game where you will make it alone in the world, and if you try, you will not have fun, nor will you really get anywhere in the game.
This is a hard question to answer for me. When I first got the game I loved it and played it a bunch. I got several jobs fairly high level and tried to see as much of the game as possible.
I really like the 3 kingdom approach, the races, the graphics, the weaponskill chains and magic bursts. The auction house is an inspired idea and the best way to sell and buy stuff I have seen in a mmorpg yet.
The problems are many though. The ui and controls are pretty bad but you can get used to them to some degree anyway. Targeting is always a pain even once you have the interface down pretty well.
The thing you need to be prepared for is the fact that you will fight the same 6 creatures through 90% of your time playing all the way from level 1 to 50 at least. Im pretty sure that trend continues all the way to 70 though I havent gotten past 50 with any jobs yet.
I found this horrible lack of variety started to wear me down on the game a great deal. In fact Im not really sure why you would ever want to fight a little pink ball named so and so leech once, let alone 50 levels of them. There are approximately 30 creature familys though many of the creatures are too rare or spread out to fight often leaving you with the 6 or so I mentioned above. Even with the one expansion this is the smallest selection of monsters I have seen in any mmorpg and very few of them are inspired or even "neat" and make the fights seem a little less exciting.
Putting everyone on the same servers was a disaster as well. Though you can communicate in some limited fashion and occasionally have a great mixed language group now and then, most of the time 40% or more of the servers population will be unavailable for you to group with.
This game has so many good points I hate to shoot it down too much, but lately the problems it does have are bad enough that I have lost most desire to play it.

I think the game is more then worth the money. I bought my friend a copy just so I had someone to play with. The only downside to starting though, is that you cant pick what server you begin on. Instead you have to use the World Pass system. I personally hate the WP.
Another thing I've noticed lately is that most MMORPG's are becoming more and more like a HUGE chat engine with something to do (level up) while you talk to your friends. I want more of a game that is like im playing, and that talking to my friends is more of an added feature and not the THE feature of the game. Like Ultima Online, before EA Games got ahold of Origin... but thats another story.
{edit} City of Heros looks like that might be the next good MMORPG for the masses IMHO {/edit}

Entirely true. The game can sometimes be very frustrating to me but the game had alot of effort put into it and it's fairly enjoyable most of the time.
I just can't help think what the game would be if they changed a few things around... (more monsters, better UI, Japs and english servers separate, and especially make soloing possible)
hmm rathma you make a good point but that is why i play DAOC, i was thinking of investing in final fantasy one of my friends was playing it and said it was cool, funny his name was rathma too and had same avatar hmm...
Is it worth the money? For one, that depends on you, because you got to have a reason to BELIEVE. Well if you honestly ask that question then for me yes because the game is worth it because I play it with all my heart and let me ask you a question. Did you enjoy the other games that were out previsiouly, because if you didn't then you will definitely hate this one as well but anyways, that is my opinion, thanks.
Final Fantasy XI is certainly a, well, different game. It has a very large and dynamic system of crafting, leveling, and questing/missions. All of these 3 seem to play a pivotal role in the whole experience that is Final Fantasy XI.

Finding a group is not very much an issue. The longest it ever took me to find a grp was 30min, and that was only 3 times out of about 50 or so times iv grouped thus far. And iv made not only a red mage, but also a monk and a thief with out any troubles finding a group with them. Grouping is not an issue. However in the latter lvls, thats 20+, grouping is almost necessary as soloing at this lvl would simply be a waist of your time, not to mention difficult. So if you like soloing, Id suggest not considering this game. But grouping is well worth it, xp and social wise. And like many people in previous posts have stated, the people are friendly, unlike the poor social atmosphere of most mmos in the market today.
Understanding the interface and the controls took me some time to figure out, something that needs a lot of work imo. A lot of people say that using a game pad works better, I have yet to try one out.
It would be best to find a Link Shell asap, a Link Shell is like a guild, simply because there will be people in it that will help you out along the way, thus speeding up the time it takes too learn all the curves and the ins and outs of the game.
All in all, id say this game is worth your moneys. Its not a bad game by all means, yet there are still a few problems that need to be addressed. Id give this game an 8/10, simply because of its style of game play, and how well the game is balanced, which is extremely rare of a mmo.
A good, light, mmo to pass the time until EQ 2 or WOW comes out.

but soloing is useless once you get high lvls. You really would want a group.

I dont think there's a trial system. I'd give the game a 6.5 or 7.0 It's an ok game...but Ive played better.

i dunno , never played it , it costs 80 $ to import the game where i live , but from the movies i have seen the game looks like good quality !
i haven't played many mmorpg games but i did play alot of rpg games !!!
