Silkroad Online

Anyone out there currently playing this or has given it a shot?  I'd never heard of it until about 15 minutes ago.  What's the gameplay and community like?

TIA for opinions and thoughts.

its free, you should try it out for yourself. The way they plan on making the money for it is to offer "premium items" that you can purchase and have active for X amount of time, like gain more experience and other nice stuff like that.

I know it's free.  I just don't want to waste the time to download it if it's nothing more than another Lineage-esque Korean grinder or if I'm going to be the only english-speaking player on the server.

That historical era is good for me, but if the game's just Lineage set on the Silk Road, I'll pass.

Don't waste your time Crash, it's a million times worse than lineage it's a typical asian grindfest coupled with, never being able to log in, terrible character movement system, bad questing system, no customization, bad graphics, and bots/hackers/farmers galore, but it's your decision::::02::

its actually a good game, the only thing that will make you quit is the grinding and the lag. Every other mmos also requires grinding so I think nothing much is new here when it comes to grinding, I like the skill system where you can choose a weapon and a force (element) or you can choose all. There are three jobs here (trader, theif, hunter), a trader trades with other cities, a theif robs the trader and a hunter kills/arrests the theif. This kind of idea has never been done in an mmo before. This game still has a potential (at least for me) they just should fix the exp rate (so much grinding) the graphics as is is great. The game still needs more polishing but as is, the game is already good not to mention its free.

Im sorry if I ask this but why are most people not only here but in almost all forums hate asian games? Its like racism or something but please explain to me what is great about western mmo that an asian mmo fail to have.

Asian games can be a little masochistic with their levelling rate, you can get pretty badly translated games and some of them are very lineage like whereby its not like WoW with so many different abilities, its more like click attack with some. Having said that I thought Silkroad Online was unusually good, though to be honest I'm not a grind fan.

I tried a lot of Asian MMO and what I learn from them is: there is no UI options, quest are pretty much inexitent, control usualy use clic and move and can not change it to anything else WASD, GRINDING, i know there is grinding in every game, but when you do it for a quest you feel like you accomplished something instead of just standing and wait for the next lvl. They have a lot of experience in console game so they don't know how to use a Keyboard, so this is why the control suck.

Just download it over night, you won't even notice it and you won't waste your time.

But to answer your question, I think it can be a good free MMO to play once in a while but not full time, community is not bad, easy to get a group. Graphix are not bad even for a free MMO. Still system is very nice, you choose what you want, it is still base. You can change the control (finally they realise we hate the clic to move). But it is grinding, lagging, hard to connect at peak hour, but remember it is free.

The current article gives me the immpression that there are more then just the asian characters/classes, that there are also Islamic, and Western characters you can play as? I know that wasn't in the beta, and I don't see any reference to that on the official site, is that something they're working on?

    I'm liking it so far.

Yes, it has high d00d/dumbass numbers, but they're easy enough to ignore.

The controls suck, but you get used to them pretty quickly. The graphics are above-average compared to most games of this ilk, monster and character animations are fairly decent. I like the game world personally, it's a well-done medieval China, IMHO, artwork, mythology and all.

Logging in can be problematical at times.

Quests are of the kill a billion of these variety. Nothing special there.

Advancement isn't well explained. You can assign skill points into anything and there's no real way of knowing if you're gimping your toon except by trial and error, or boning up on it from a fansite. There's no classes or schools or whatever. You can use or cast anything so long as your levle allows it and you have enough skill points there.

Still, you get what you pay for and I can't complain. It's free and when it gets old as I'm sure it will, I'll just leave it installed and come back to it when the mood is upon me.
