A lot of questions for an MMO Player looking for new games...

Ok, I was horribly pissed beyond ever returning to SWG when the developers sunk the game into the ground but good (Me, there are 2 things I love to do in games.... Make/Sell items and Control Pets/AI... And SWG completely left both parts in utter chaos.) The AI scripting for Droids and other Pets was god awful (You tell a pet to attack, it runs off in some random direction.) So, I'm looking to get into an MMO game and wanted a few specifics things out of it...

  • Can anyone recommend an MMO Game that has an Auctioning System? (Something along the lines of SWG except NOT as bogged down by broken or crappy items.)
  • Any recomendations for games that have a Player Driven Economy?
  • Any recommendations for games that have DECENT, if not awesome, AI scripts/programming for pets you control? (I love Pets/Droids/Summoned Creatures/Etc.)
  • Any servers with player created cities (See, I love Star Wars Galaxies ambition... The player Cities in theory were awesome.... In practice they just dropped the ball on it.) I was wondering if any other MMORPG's tried this and succeeded at it.
  • Probably my most important question, any MMO games that have hardcore/mature role playing dedicated servers? (It's nice when players can treat an MMORPG like a real RPG.)

Any help with selecting a new game would be really REALLY appreciated

    not wow.

you could try uo (no auctioning system) & horizons (not sure about *pets* here); then there's ryzom (not so much on the housing here, you can just get an apartment to store stuff in, can't modify the apartments, yet. and not sure about *pets*) and shadowbane (for more of the player created cities and lots of pvp).

could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

You might have better luck posting on the General Discussion forum.

    Anywho ...

I'm not aware of any current mmo that will meet all your needs. However, you may want to check out trials for Eve Online (great player economy and market system, with some decent roleplay), and possibly The Saga of Ryzom.

    Bien suerte. ^_^

Isn't Eve Online a Space Sim with a starship rather then an actual character? I'm looking for more along the lines of a RPG that you can play a character rather then an object in.

Actually I'm having more luck here in this forum then the general one  But out of all the options, what does WOW have? (I know I'm not gonna find all of them in one game but which of these options I'm looking for does WOW have?)

if you like a class with pets, then WoW is good for you.  Hunters are great fun to play, but good luck finding a group with one, cause EVERYONE plays hunter

Warlocks are extremely powerful classes with pets, and the best DoT abilities in the game.  They are however one of the more complex classes to play in the game.  However, you don't sound like too much of a newb to the MMO genre, so prolly a great class for you to pick.  I suggest you go with Undead Warlock.  Their racial abilities are great for it and make more sense then any other race for rp purposes.

Crafting?  not so great in WoW.

    That's about it.

If you do this soon, roll on Demon Soul.  New realm where I am re-rolling an Orc Shaman

I've been hearing people go nuts over Warlocks (I've always had a Necromancer fetish since my old Evercrack days) so I've heard good stuff about the pets in WOW...... So, no auction system or anything? Hmmmm...

    Is there a RP-ONLY server?

Oh ya, sorry, there is a good auction system.

Auction Houses in every major city, and cross faction AH's in an NPC faction cities.

There are RP servers.  Even better, I think there are still a couple RP/PVP servers too.  RP servers in WoW are like PVE servers.  Meaning you need to be flagged to be engaged.  PVP servers you can be killed anywhere in a contested zone, at anytime.

Then how can Crafting be bad if they have Auction Houses?

Because the vast majority of items that you can craft aren't as good as what you can get out of drops or quest rewards.  Also, the at the highest of lvls, the materials to make items cost more than what you can sell the crafted item for.  However, there are a few exceptions here and there.

Alchemy does well in making money.  And engineering can be fun and give you great trinkets and devices, but you can't sell any of it cause you need to be an engineer to use it.

Enchanting is a profession that is entirely independant of auction houses.  However, you can sell materials for good money.

Eve has some truely great concepts, so I'd still suggest giving the 14 Day trail a go. Just keep in mind, the first few hours can be boring.

'Space Sim' is an extremely broad generalization. Eve has a bit more to offer than just flying around in your ship, such as crafting, manipulating the player based economy, and player politics.

I find WoW more of a game, than an experience (such was offered in pre-NGE SWG or in Eve). If you're into deep character development, WoW may not be the game for you. That's just my opinion though.

You can find RP in WoW, but you'll have better luck on an RP server, like Emerald Dream. Even on those servers, I'd recommend seeking out an RP guild. Other than a GM, there are no mechanics to enforce RP.

Crafting in WoW is not the game's strongest element, like you experienced in SWG. The recipes aren't complex, and you never have a chance at failing or creating a unique version of the item. Having said that, crafting is still enjoyable, and it's really fun having a rare recipe.

WoW does have a player driven economy. I like the Auction House model, but I'd wish you could list items for periods longer than 24 hours.

WoW has it's issues, however overall after almost 2 years I feel that I'm getting my entertainment-dollar's worth.
