DnL terrain graphics are great

ZorbaneZorbane Member UncommonPosts: 529

I realized something (which some of you may have already...)

The great graphics that the fanbois and others are referring to is just the terrain

I personally think the terrain graphics looks awesome

However everything else is buttugly

Case in point here

http://darkandlight.net/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=4031

Put your hand over the toon and the buildings on the right

Looks gorgeous huh?

Now look carefully at the toon

OMFG ugly

I guess we all know why the terrain is good at least

Yea, the terrain/world graphics are about the ONLY thing I liked about DNL.

    Currently Playing: DAOC Uthgard

Previously Played: UO, DAOC, Shadowbane, AC2, SWG, Horizons, COX, WOW, EQ2, LOTRO, AOC, WAR, Vanguard, Rift, SWTOR, ESO, GW2.

I'm completely baffled by people on those messageboards. If you look at the post about Best MMORPG launch..by far its amazing what people are saying.

Sure the graphics are nice but there isn't a damn thing to do in the game, nothing works. How are people getting a head start with the game when there isn't anything to do for a week??? What are they going to do? Memorize the world map?

Next people are going to praise the developers and have huge block parties when actually fix something in the game.

Personally I think the whole game is bland and butt ugly. But hey, that's just my opinion. Hopefully something can be done with this game in the future.

Obviously those people haven't played many mmorpgs. Anyone who has played at least a couple of mmorpgs in the past would never say something as stupid as that. Not only that, but how can you make a comment like that less then 24 hours after release, when only a small portion of the playerbase can even play yet?

Distance graphics are good. Up close the textures are muddy and blured.

theres still severe aliasing in the terrain graphics

thats a pretty nice screenshot though, nice and high res.. but I have to ask why is there aliasing in it?  at high res that should get rid of a lot of it, but it still looks very dated due to this issue.

in every screenshot I see I can see the jagged edges, this one is not as severe... the ones I saw released yesterday of the "official released" DnL look horrific.

    is there no anti-aliasing setting?

I know its less than 24 hours, I only say this because they are making posts like its the best and complete release ever.

I would no0t take too many of those posts too seriously. Developers/employees have been known to make posts posing as fans to try and put positive spin on chunks of excrement.

The terrain graphics are the best part of the game, and the only part of the game NOT developed by Farlan. Go figure.

The terrain graphics would be excellent for a flight simulator. But it sure does seem like a couple amateurs took the terrain engine and slapped a half-assed game on top of it.

Wow, I have been pretty much anti this game. But that screenshot looks amazing. I may have to pay a little closer attention to this. I'd still be a little apprehensive as Turbine is making it. But we'll see.

It was most (likely) a terrain engine to begin with & there was a lawsuit about Farlan "stealing" it, nothing happened though.

From what I have seen of D&L-screenshots the art is totally worthless, reminds me of cheap "how you learn to paint in 7 easy steps"-books.
It is very easy to see that characters & buildings do NOT match the terrain graphics, most crappy games are consistent in the art department at least.

THe Terrain Techmology was VWORLD Terrain by _pix_. There was no lawsuit , as yet anyway. There are only assertations of the true ownership of the developed technology wherein Farlan/NP3 claims it when in fact _Pix_ had developed it long before he even spoke with NP3/Farlan.  _Pix_ left NP3/Farlan fiasco in 2004.

And yes it does look like some paint program for dummies was slapped on top of it. The Art Director also left NP3/Farlan fiasco in 2004.

That tells you why the terrain and distance is the best there is in the game. But the art after the other Vincent left definitely left a huge hole in game development. They apparently did not fill those positions with competent ppl. So at least since 2004 nothing has been done except a simple paint program for dummies slapped on top of a technology they have no idea how to use (yet claim to have developed) as evidenced by the now :off the list: of weather affecting armor as well as the Druids ability to control the weather (a selling point) . Per their own statement, they were "unable to get into the code" for it. hehehe SO you may add too that _Pix_ developed a supersecretunbreakablecode that perhaps many security companies could benefit from . hehehee

That lorimage looks a little too cartoony and WoW-ish to me. No thanks. It's nice, but something about it is just too cartoony.

LoTRO is using a modified version of the AC2 engine, so at least it is stable and will deliver good performance. As far as the cartoon stying I suppose that is a matter of taste. I also like Warhammer Onlines graphics, but they are also cartoony. I liked WoWs  graphics, but it's gameplay bored me to tears after 3 weeks. Until the 7900 GTX is a low end $100 card I don't think they will be able to make realistic graphics that perform well in a MMORPG. Spare me the play dough hair of EQII and Vanguard if you don't mind. Those barbie doll charaters just turn me off completly. Again each to their own and matter of taste etc etc.

You may want to look into this one though it uses the Crytek engine from Farcry but it is still pretty early in it's development so who knows

Pirates of the Burning Sea has some awesome graphics. How they will run on the average machine is still to be seen.

Yap Bionatcis have greate textures that are use in DnL and VWORLD terrain -> http://www.bionatics.com/ they realy did great job

As for DnL you can clearly see why there was so many delay's ... a partner left ( Pix ), lead gfx designer and probably few other people.

As for DnL graphics here are some of my SS:

    and

    and

    and

I agree character models (and some mobs) would need some polishing.

p.s. I dont have everything on max settings ( game have sirious FPS issues that should be priority one  )

we have already seen the tired ss's.

As far as the delays -- Important team members -- that werent replaced with any kind of competent replacements is quite evident. Does that excuse the piss poor game? No. Is it the customers problem? No. Is it the fault of the company. Yes. In every respect.
