Can't Wait For This Game!

OldManFunkOldManFunk Member Posts: 894

I can't wait for Darkfall.
  • 50,000 players per server
  • 20+ mounts, including flying ones
  • No harsh death penalties like stat loss or full loot
  • Underwater adventures
  • 3D graphics
  • Sounds

Jonric: Is it your intention to have one large gameworld or multiple smaller ones? Do you have a target server capacity?

Erik Sperling Johansen:
For starters we're going for one
large server cluster, with all users living in the same gameworld. The
design of the server permits scaling to an unlimited size, but we will
meet practical hardware limits giving us a theoretical max of about
50-60 thousand simultaneous users. Until we get this properly tested
that number is just an educated guess though, if the server can handle
30k users, I'm satisfied, if it can handle 40k I'll be happy.

Q: In AO, we were introduced to vehicles. These were not
independent things that could be parked, stolen, sat upon, etc - they
were very lame morphing of the character into the vehicle (i.e. man
becomes car). In SOL (EQ) this will be repeated. In DAOC, their
vehicles amount to buy ticket and sit on horse till it gets to the
destination (whereupon it disappears) or jump off enroute. Will your
game have vehicles? Will the character models 'morph' into the vehicle,
be forced to only go along vehicle routes or will the vehicles be
completely separate from the characters?

Claus: Our game will have horses (actually we have about 20
mountablemonsters, including flying ones), wagons and ships. And no,
you will not morph into a War Galleon :)

Q: What are the death penalties? Will you lose experience? Skills? Items?

Claus: We are still very much debating this. I think we have to
testdifferent penalties to find the right one. Right now there is no
stat loss, and you keep all items worn and wielded, but you loose
everything in your backpack.

<Brannoc>
*Chloe* It was said that
players sometimes have the ability to fly, either by spells or by a mount. How
high will a 'flyer' be able to go? And.. if you are implementing underwater
stuff, which I'm not sure if you are or not, how deep can you go? Which brings
up, how will the seas be handled with air to sea combat, piracy, etc.

<BjornTore|Dev> Within reasonable
limits, You can fly Very high :-) As for underwater cities, dungeons and sights
- definetely.

<BjornTore|Dev> We aim to make very
athmospheric and challenging underwater adventures

What more could you want? Beta!

GB: It's been nearly two years since we talked
to you last, so can you give us a quick summary of where you stand in
the development of Darkfall?

Claus: We have come a long way since the first
Gamebanshee interview. Back then we had the four guys in a basement,
now we have a team of 20 people working hard on finishing the game. We
also moved country, from a basement in Oslo, Norway to modern offices
close to the Olympic stadium in Athens, Greece. We all have a nice tan
now.

Darkfall is entering closed beta testing in September this year.
The closed beta is fully playable, with most core features implemented.
We will be adding features and content during closed beta, while we
gear up for the next beta stages.

Nefastus: Is there any ETA on additional information regarding beta being released?

Brannoc: I expect we'll see something this week

Nefastus: Cool, nice.

Brannoc: but I don't think anything major will happen before mid-oct

Nefastus: Still, I doubted anything would happen for months, so even Novemember would be better than nothing

Brannoc: it'll happen before 06

Jonric: What is Darkfall's current status, when do you expect it to
launch, and how much has it evolved during its extended development
period of more than four years?

Tasos Flambouras:
We're preparing for beta testing as we speak; you can apply on this page of our website. It's a huge job, and we want it done right. The start
of the beta is affected by multiple variables, and not just development
ones. The same goes for Darkfall's launch date. Once we have a date
that we're reasonably sure of, we'll announce it immediately. The
additional time taken to work on the game was a decision made in an
effort to make Darkfall directly competitive with the largest MMOG
titles out there. Nobody is going to feel they've stepped down by
switching to Darkfall, or play Darkfall as an alternative to their main
game.

I could wait forever to get into Darkfall beta.

This game is unbelievable.

I admit that I had some doubts
before.

The E3 information made me understand just what kind of game Darkfall is.

I'm your biggest fan.

I hate to burst your bubble but you are looking at some very old info there.

    1.  The last thing they said about players per server was 10k+.  10k+ is a lot of people(WoW has what, 1-3k per?), but it is nowhere near 50k.

    2.  They took out the original racial mounts but later added in new racial mounts.  I wouldn't expect more than 7 types of mounts including horses, and I seriously doubt there will be flying mounts since the devs have since stated that they took flying(at least personal flying spells and the like) out of the game due to balance issues.

    3.  There is indeed full loot.  It is a core feature of the economy and game.

    4.  Yeah, underwater adventures.

5/6.  3d graphics and sound just like every other normal MMO.

Darkfall is an excellent game regardless.

Yeah its old, but its still pretty funny to see all those beta quotes together =)

Jesus 50k people on one server would be nuts. I dont think there is a feasible way for a company to handle that many people on one server. WoW can only handle a little over 10k and that gets pretty laggy at times.

  • DecimatusDecimatus Member Posts: 41
Well, the devs(Erik I think) have stated that their server technology could theoretically hold 200,000 subscribers.

The last quote we have on the matter is that they are hoping to put 10k+ people on one server.

So, if everything works out ok, 10k people.  If the server tech is the best thing since sliced bread, between 10k and 200k.

I am just expecting 10k people, and if they fit 50k+ I will enjoy being thoroughly surprised.

10.000 is a huge number to have on a server. 200.000 sounds quite amazing and IMHO impossible.
If their servers are really that good, I'd say 20.000 on the server max.

But hey, what do I know? I'm always open for surprises.

I don't know about their IT guys, but I do know that this game will be the best thing since sliced bread! *Firm nod*

    Apparently, servers have evolved.

They can now connect different servers together, creating super server :)

    like eve/dnl(hopefully)

SaintedOne, your sig looks eerily familiar (thinks of an elf rogue running around with other elves...)

Lemme know what server you choose when the game goes up, me and some friends'll join you when this bad boy comes out. If all goes well, that'll be at least 2 people, at most 5.

Yeah I have to agree, this game looks fantastic! But there are some small issues I have with the screenshots they have posted here; in terms of some of the shading and shadow effects not looking right. But apart from that the actual game spec looks pretty awesome. I'm going to sign up just for the 20 mounts!

People don't realize it and will probably never admit, but it is true that most gamers care about graphics for the first 2 - 5 hours they play a MMORPG. If it looks somewhat decent, they could care less since it's not the graphics that make a great game, but the gameplay and the people they play with.

  • lysandinglysanding Member Posts: 154

WISH talked alot too.. till it got into a real beta..

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware

"Yeah I have to agree, this game looks fantastic!"

based on what? a few screenshots and videos that look like nothing more than an early alpha?  after 4 years no less..

i love it when people hype games based on what they might be and not what they are and probably will never be.

Dream crushed? the people who don't like pvp death penalty's and such have big companies developing games for them, where you, the pvp kids, get your game developed by a really small company with about what...20 developers? I'm afraid you will be the one who will see your dream crushed, as an mmorpg can't be made by a small team.
  • KamadrionKamadrion Member Posts: 21
what's with all the hating in here?

It doens't matter if it's a small team. It is fairly possible. If you don't have anything better to do than complaining about this game, then you must be really bored.

We will see if the game is any good once beta testing has begun. Till then chill out and do something fun like playing a game...?
