meh its getting good press here as well as on a few other MMO specific gaming sites (rpgvault, hammer) The marketing hasn't kicked in due to the fact that we are no where near release. Besides which there are a large number of people who at one time played gemstone and dragons realm (the muds simu created and still operate) but dropped the games in favor of graphical MMO's. I think you will see a large number of those former players remember gemstone and DR fondly, and will if nothing else give HJ the chance it deserves.

Besides which I find sometimes trying to build too large of a community has.... adverse affects.... "zomg zomg I pwn u lol roflcopter n00b!!!!!!212112!! pew pew" <cough>

True enough, I could really do without a bunch of numb-nuts running around, but at the same time I would like HJ to be very profitable, so there is that give and take. I wouldn't even mind if Simu found a publisher (NOT SOE) to give HJ a big push.

well ill agree sometimes if you market the game TOO much .. you bring in players that might not have even really wanted to be there in the first place, and will start a ruckuss and negative tone within the communication between developers and players , when they feel they arent seeing things they want in the game, or just dont like the style of game it is and fight against it .....

but at the same time ... as beautiful as this game looks, as refreshing and relaxed as it looks, for me to subscribe id really need to feel confident that it would have an adequate following, so that in fact it would remain profitable for the developers to update and keep maintennence frequently...and release expansions when necessary...

but having started a thread in the general chat .. where  people listed their 3 most anticipated mmorpg's ... HERO's JOURNEY was one of the top games listed, as in it was one of the games people had listed the most in their top 3 ...

so this is a good sign

I hope this hasn't been answered yet, but I belive the reason it doesn't have the marketing and hype it deserves is look who is funding it.  Simutronics, look who is developing everything from the ground up.  Simutronics.

Whereas any SOE game released has millions of dollars of funds behind their back to put out the marketing, same goes with Blizzard, and any other top-game seller. Vivendi isn't poor ;)

However, the strong community is already forming.  I encourage you to check out Hero's Hall.  It's a Hero's Journey fansite that I own, and I am doing everything in my bones to make sure it has the best community possible.  Active forums, up-to-date content, IRC activity.  Everything.

    Enjoy!

Yeah,i'd like to add that a "strong community" doesn't have to be 8 million strong. In fact you're better off with much smaller numbers if you want a really stong community. I've played games that had millions playing,a nd some that had a few thouisand, and I would say that the games with less people playing had much better communities. WoW has the absolutely worse community on the planet, and they have the most subs of any MMO. I think the HJ comminty is pretty strong right now.

ah, the catch 22.  i like strong community's [ ones that work well, foster a good rp environment, and actually follow game mechanics and dev story paths without really having to be goaded by the dev's themselves, but by each other ] and i also like a lot of people being around.

i started playing dr again recently and find it very... empty.  any of the people there now say they like it better this way.  it just feels lonely to me.  makes me sad for the times i used to hunt and have to actually hunt for a room to hunt in.  it forced me to always meet new people as eventually i had to ask to join someone's room.  had many a great time with all the new folks i met and adventured with.  finding a secret little hideaway really felt that way.  now all i have to do is step one street off the main drag in crossing and im in a secret place to never be bothered by others.  its hard to feel like and thus rp im in a city, when there's only a handfull of people in it at any given time.  /me shrugs.

In my opinion Simutronics is doing a great job considering the fact that they are doing all of their marketing in-house.  They have essentially only spent money on marketing Hero's Journey/HeroEngine at GDC and E3.  All of their other marketing campaigns have been simply to push as much possible information and multimedia to as many media outlets as they possibly can.  It's a good strategic approach to marketing when you've got a limited budget.  Marketing an MMO in today's saturated market is no easy task, but they're doing it rather successfully and with little expense.

Will Hero's Journey get the community it needs to be a "massive" hit?  I doubt it just because of the fact that they don't have the budget or the franchise to back them.
