Why I Left EverQuest II

Nikoz78Nikoz78 Member UncommonPosts: 910

I have recently closed my EQII accounts (I had four). I will say that this MMORPG has awesome graphics (if a little cartoonish) and absolutly wonderful controls and UI. But, in the end, I realized that I had fallin in love with a pretty chick with a really lame personality.

The things that drove me to leave:

* WAY  too many zones/instances'. The game always felt small to me. Having to load every 5 min got real old real fast. For an RPG this ruined the immersive feel. A huge seamless world would have made it much, much more interesting.

*  It's just a forced-grouping game designed to level in. That's about it.  You spend all your time grouping/LFG, and leveling. Boring.  As an MMORPG player I want a virtual world I can live  in not just level in. The RP aspects were just too slim, and despite a great Roleplaying community on Antonia Bayle (RP server), it just falls short.

* I am a player-housing geek. The housing system flat out sucks.

* A RAID-oriented endgame. /yawn

* Recently SOE dumbed down the game even more in the persuit of WOW-like profits. This attracts the kind of gamers the EQ community detests.

*  Absolutly zero fear of death. "Oh, you died? No worries, just hit the revive button!" The price of death was a joke...

* The world (or zones, I should say) is too linear and static. Might as well go play a console game.

* The kiddie aspect of the mythos. You could not possibly make this game anymore poltically correct. The NPC dialog was grone-inducing.

And I'll just end it there. Many folks have their own reasons for leaving, but the above are my own personal reasons (and just a few of them at that).  Ofcourse these are just my opinions, but I thought it was worth sharing as I spent a good chuck of my time and money on this MMO.

I have moved to DAoC. It is far from my ideal MMORPG, but a hell of a lot funner IMO. Looking forward to Vanguard....

sorry for going off topic, but I would to ask why you had 4 accounts? thats 60$ a month, isn't that a little expensive for one game? and why would you make more then one account, do you really need that many char slots?

Still though it seems he's quitting because SoE is trying to make EQ2 more of a casual game than hardcore. I think the game still has some hardcore elements in it. They are trying to keep it balanced so that both casual and hardcore gamers can enjoy it.

Going to disagree with one of his points, he mentioned the game is too linear? It's not to me, you can run around and do anything anywhere. It's nothing like a consule game.

for me i left for a few of reasons

    1. got really tired of my class being so useless.  i was a shadowknight for a year and end up realizing how unimportant they were.  just when i got a great taunt spell, SOE nerfs it.  that just pisses me off.

    2.  got fed up on missing out most of the content avaliable because it was under group only.  since i had a hard time getting groups because of my class, i just couldnt take it any more of hunting solos day in and day out all day everyday.  often wished SOE were to make the same content avaliable for grouping, making it soloable also to give people a choice.

    3. i played for a year for EQ2 there are other games i wanted to play instead of eq2.  since i like to play new games i just decided to drop my subscription with SOE.

Have played: CoH, DDO EQ2, FFXI, L2, HZ, SoR, and WW2 online

What did you do, just run around zoning all the time???. For me once im in a zone i stay there for a bit.  Every 5mins is a bit of an exageration on your part.

Forced grouping, yeah sure.  Ive soled 99% of my time up to lvl 63 on my main.

I like the housing system, plus what you can put in them, decoration etc.  Why does it suck?? Back up your statement with examples.

No different than any other mmorpg.

I felt the same way.... it felt to me so closed in like even though the land was travelable you were still herded down a certain path.... I never actually played EQ but I used to watch my friend play it and that world seemed huge and much more interesting.

He may be exagerating but there is something to be said for large seamless worlds such as every individual planet (except the new ones) in SWG.

    *  It's just a forced-grouping game designed to level in. That's about it.  You spend all your time grouping/LFG, and leveling. This may be true now, but is it really a good alternative?  It wasn't when I played, grinding in groups were much better ways to level than grinding by yourself.... if its changed that is good.

    * I am a player-housing geek. The housing system flat out sucks.
I like the housing system, plus what you can put in them, decoration etc.  Why does it suck?? Back up your statement with examples.
I think he, as I would have preffered non instanced housing that could be placed in certain sections of certain zones like Antonica.  The decorating system was very nice and I enjoyed it much more than SWGs.

    * A RAID-oriented endgame. /yawn
No different than any other mmorpg.
Not all games SWG, EVE, WoW, all have many alternatives to WoW, as does DAoC

Its true, the game did seem more WoW-Like when I came back to check out the revamps. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

    *  Absolutly zero fear of death. "Oh, you died? No worries, just hit the revive button!" The price of death was a joke...

You raise some valid points but they are found in most mmorpg anyhow .

I will not touch on all points but this point seems to intrest me most.

Now EQ2 does not have the worst penalty for death ever which i thank the lord for.Going back to EQ1 old days death penalty is a bit harsh with my work commitment.

But its by no means light. Its harsher then DAoC!

Play the pvp server, you die you get looted, you lose fame, you get exp debt!Thats right exp debt for dying in pvp and since its open pvp you can get killed by someone 10-? levels above you depending on the zone and still get exp debt!

No such thing as to many instances.  Thats like saying the game has to much to do and if thats the case, good. As to zoning, cope with it because its why there can be a ton of players on the same server and not kill it. Try playing wow with a limit of like 2k people because they got one gigantic zone and the lag/disconnects drops you every 10 minutes.

    *  It's just a forced-grouping game designed to level in. That's about it.  You spend all your time grouping/LFG, and leveling. MMOs are a grouping experience but you can also solo and small group in EQ2, more so than WoW these days. Besides you got 4 accounts, what else for except to 4 box and make your own group.

    * I am a player-housing geek. The housing system flat out sucks.

It's better than anyone I've seen before. Besides just saying it sucks why not explain why?

    * A RAID-oriented endgame. /yawn

    This is an outright lie.

    * Recently SOE dumbed down the game even more in the persuit of WOW-like profits. This attracts the kind of gamers the EQ community detests.

    Again outright lie.

    *  Absolutly zero fear of death. "Oh, you died? No worries, just hit the revive button!" The price of death was a joke...

Armor is damaged, you get exp debt. Again lie.

    * The world (or zones, I should say) is too linear and static. Might as well go play a console game.

You haven't played EQ2 I am guessing. Wanna see linear go check out WoW. You have to do MC, then BWL then AQ... thats the progression.

    * The kiddie aspect of the mythos. You could not possibly make this game anymore poltically correct. The NPC dialog was grone-inducing.

Mythos? There are no gods right now. What are you talking out of?

I don't get why people think their needs to be harsh death penalties. No game has ever instituted harsh death penalties until EQ came along. You lost days of hard work. One lame pointless game has harsh death penalties, and people think it should stay that way for some reason.

EQ2 dumbed down?? Please give examples. I never found the game hard.

I do agree with some of your other complaints. Like ZERG raiding. Wow, talk about a dumbing stuff down. Raids are a joke of an end game. Let's take 40 people to kill this 1 thing. HAHAHA WE PWN.

Although some of the points people replied with are valid, others are based on personal opinions and experiences. For example, YOU might have solo'ed up till level 63, but have you ever tried playing a priest? Past a certain level, you're no longer able to solo anything and you HAVE to rely on a group to gain levels. On the plus side, every group wants you, so it works out. Another thing is the death penalty. Some of you want a harsh death penalty and others might not, but that's just a personal opinion. Faulting a game for its death penalty system is like buying a hamburger and complaining it's not a hotdog. Just because you don't like hamburgers, does it mean something is inherently wrong with the hamburger itself? Something to think about...

Of course they are.  But in the case of this OP, he talks out of a hole in his ass, offers no examples just bashes.

If people dont like the game and leave, fine, if your gonna post about it, fine, just make it constructive and provide examples and dont make it a SOE bash fest like these "why i quit" posts usually are.

I along with many others are getting sick of the whiners who offer little more than "this game sucks".

I wish i could find a game with true ZERG raiding, full on zerg wars are extremely fun IMO. Wow is more like, heres onyxia, okay tank go, wait wait wait wait, 5 sunders, okay dps!!, stop dps, okay dps!!, onyxia dies. Required was a video of somebody else doing this encounter and getting 30 to 40 people of the right classes to work together(which is the worse part of wow) to duplicate the strategy. Rinse and repeat weekly, Ladies and gentlemen, there you have the WoW raiding experience!

thats why you choose a class thats decent at soloing if your looking to solo if you really really want to play a templar, inquisitor, mystic, defiler, guardian then either put up with it or choose another class!

There is the prove that u didnt get to high lvls, where a death can mean like an hour of solo-killing to recover de debt, plus the price of reparing the high lvl equipment can really get expensive, sometime i spend like 20g only to get my equipment back at 100%.

Truth, im not afraid of death on EQ2, it just pisses me off a lot, but the prices i think is the right one

  • ArremusArremus Member Posts: 656
Man, death means less in EQ2 than it does in WoW, and that's saying something (bad).
I used to harvest in Lavastorm with my Warlock, then jump in the lava to get a quick port to the docks, so I could run straight to SolEye etc.
That's pathetic that death means so little that you can strip off and use it for travel.

The reason I quit? Well one of the major ones. Because of situations like this:
    http://eqiiforums.station.sony.com/eq2/board/message?board.id=39&message.id=32186

Stealth nerfs to key class abilities, with no explaination until a couple of weeks after when one of the CS fucksticks gets on and says it was "a broken game mechanic that needed to be fixed" etc. A year or more later. Uh huh.

I quit mainly due to the fact that SoE are a bunch of social fucking retards.
