360, PS3 MMOs

ok so this is my question to the PC MMO public

With the mad rush to put MMOs on the 360 and PS3, do think PC gamering would move to the new systems and play MMOs there? On one hand the console systems wont have the large upgrade and maintance cost that a good PC system does, but the console MMOs might not be as easy to interact with other on even though you can use a USB keyboard on the 360

The hardcore MMO players will always be bias towards a PC.  They can upgrade it piece by piece, manipulate it as they see fit, listen to music through it, chat with friends, check e-mail, etc...   my $0.02

Ive always felt that the nex gen systems for console gaming will be more like a PC and less like a toy.Already the 360 is demonstrating this.Already it can perform many of the functions of a PC.

XBOXLIVE is an indication that online gaming is truly set to explode. All they need is a really good mmo that is cross platform.Add a keyboard and wireless mouse/device and you will have many players jumping ship imho.

    Want to ENJOY an mmo?

Dont start a guild and dont be a leader or volunteer to be coleader or captain.

    Just play the damn game:)

Actually you can do all of those things except for the upgrading (which shouldn't be needed, as it should perform optimally out of the box), on the 360.  You can check email, chat with friends with keyboard, or voice, and listen to music (whether it be on the 360 HD or streaming from the PC).

There are still limitations though.  But so far, it's not as bad as you think. :)  I'd love to see some good mmos hit the 360.  I tried FFXI on it, and while it's a horrible game to me, I could see I'd love to just plop down on the couch and grind out some levels.  Sure you can do that with a PC also, but it's a tiny bit more complicated. :Pa

I would play. Phanasty Star Universe is comming out for 360 and I plan on getting it for that instead of PC cuz it would lag up.

First I'd just like to note taht Phantasy Star Universe technically isn't a Massively Multiplayer Online Game.  It is a single player game with multiplayer facets.  The multiplayer system is very similar to that of Blizzard's Battle.net.

When FFXI came out for PS2 I figured I'd never touch it, but I was shocked at how much easier it was to play on PS2 than PC just because of the way the user-interface was built.  If an MMO were released on both console and PC than I'd honestly have to sit back and try both versions before I could rule out the console.

There are benefits to both sides of the coin and I'm confident that one day we'll start seeing MMO's developed exclusively for consoles.

well I know that marvel online goes to 360, DC online goes to PS3. WoW has stated their desire to head to consoles as well as PC. 360 is getting a car rally game with over 3600 sq miles of driving and events for their players. Something was also said about making huxley a MMO for 360 as well

I think we need to draw the distinction between "online," and "massive online."

I agree that XBox live was good at showing the potential for "online" games.  Games like Madden, Halo, etc.  But trust me, if the internet people and Microsoft weren't interested in grooming a market for internet phone service, we wouldn't see nearly as much emphasis on online games.

But "massive online" games are different, and I have yet to see a 24 hour virtual world succeed on console.  I mean, this is the platform of choice when it comes to "solve in a week" adventure games, or driving games, or offline, turn based RPGs like Xenosaga.

The hardware is the easiest part.  The more complicated matters are in the design, quality control, customer service, and most importantly, changing the culture of the consumer of console software.

I could go into greater detail on the real difficulties with making massive worlds work for console.  Suffice it to say that success in peer-to-peer Madden NFL, or Unreal Tournament does in no way translate to success in porting a massive, perpetual, open-ended, recurring charge, game service that offers no offline playability.

waste of time and money in my opinion. First of all, there would be a lack of buttons, meaning they would sell you keyboards and cheap 'extra button' pads $.$

Second, there would be more little kids, meaning more 'OMG GIMEM MONEY!!1' spammers, therefore a terrible community.

Just stick to the console that was the best from the beginning, (no not commodore 64, silly) THE PC.

Yes, when I found out FFXI was on the Ps2, I jumped off my crappy computer system to a no lag environment. Games like GuildWars and such, that require a lot of no lag situations, moving it to a console where it's built to not lag would be a haven.

    But,......we'll seeeeee.

I thought PS3 was getting Marvel and 360 was getting DC.

BTW Any new feedback or screenshots of these games yet?!

  • baffbaff Member Posts: 9,457

The new Marvel game is supposed to work on the PSP also.

Adoption of new platforms will be geographically specific, countries without strong trade bonds to the U.S. will never adopt X-box, countries with poor ties to Japan won't adopt Playstation.

Everybody has a PC already. Who would buy a console for £100+ to play the same game they can already play on their PC?

I don't think adding keyboards to consoles will be an exceptionally big seller, everybody already has a keyboard enabled device.

I think it will however introduce a lot more children to MMO's. I'll get my son a keyboard for his Playstation if it means he will get of my PC for once.

Having a keyboard is much better....

My first love was EverQuest Online Adventures on the PS2.  I thought it was a fantastic game that not many people gave a chance...amazing world.  Anyway, it was almost no different from playing WoW on my PC.  Just plug in a basic USB keyboard.  The controls on a console are actually in some ways better than on the PC, especially for macroing and the like.  In fact, if my account had not been hacked (fuck you whoever you are) I'd still be playing.

Console MMOs can work, and have worked (played FFXI too.  It was fun, but I didn't have enough time for it.  when I did later on I bought it for the PC and the controls were ATROCIOUS).  Companies just need to try and capitalize on it.  And I think they will, especially companies with some money to throw at it (like Blizzard and WoW, for instance)

I dunno if its just me but my computer runs on the same hardware as moden laptops around £700 and the only game ive experienced lag with is SWG so i dont see how lag should be a factor personally plus computer graphics have the potentionaly to be alot better than 360 or ps3 because every day a new graphics crad is realesed lol

As long as the MMOs servers on that particular platform stay so it supports only that platform then i see no problem with that and I would be happy to play MMOs on my 360.

But if it was made so XBOX and PC users log onto the same server then I believe it would be a dreadful idea and wouldn't support it in the slightest.

How does that work? arn't there any major disadvatages between each platform, surely a keyboard and mouse give the player quicker reaction times and more accesability then a 10 buttoned controler?

I believe that in the case of FFXI it was actually made for the console. Then ported over to PC. That is why it works so well. I think that because of this, it has an awkward setup on the PC version.

I don't think that I would enjoy playing MMOs on a console. It would entail buying extra peripherals for just a single game? A keyboard is necessary for MMOs. The new MMOs are always pushing the limit graphics wise as well. I wouldn't want to end up with a toned down version because the hardware couldn't handle it. This also brings up Joystick + Keyboard vs. Mouse + Keyboard. Where the Joystick for all consoles, except maybe the Wii, is two handed.

I also read somewhere that the MMOFPS Huxley will have a console version [xbox 360]. The console version will actually play as another race/species that plays against the PC players. I'm not sure how this will work out. On one hand I think that it is cool, and they are able to take different approaches to how you play the game for each of the races. Then, I think about the number of people who play MMOs on consoles compared to the number of people that MMOs on PCs. It's going to be lopsided for sure.

This goes for all the other kiddie comments as well.  According to The Entertainment Software Association:

    For Console Gamers...

    • Forty percent of most frequent game players are under eighteen years old.
    • Thirty-five percent of most frequent game players are between 18 and 35 years old.
    • Twenty-five percent of most frequent game players are over 35 years old.

The majority (60%) are over the age of 18.  Sorry, I just hate seeing the stereotype of console players all being 12 year olds.

Agreeing with you there. I got oblivion on my PC when it was 1st released and played it to death. I bought an xbox a month ago and bought oblivion on that as well mainly because i got to lie in my couch and play on a bigger screen
