For those of you who think this game will be mainly instanced

This should put an end to that line of thinking.

I refer you to the post by Deodatus (GNH Community Manager) on the GNH forums:

"The other major issue, as I mentioned, comes in server costs. Since more than 80% of our game is non-instanced, that means that we're talking about 26, 1 square kilometer non-instanced zones that we have to support and keep stable for thousands of players at any given moment. While we do have the lead designer of Diablo II on staff, our server system is dramatically different than the "meet-in-a-lobby-and-connect-to-a-game" type of play. "

Ahh, thanks for pointing that out Iron. 80% of the game being non-instanced is quite a bit. Im not sure where people are getting their false ideas from.

Yeah it's kinda funny really because from what I understand it this game is going to be one of the biggest MMOs around in non instanced land mass. A lot of other MMOs currently coming out are going smaller and smaller.

I prefer 10% instanced or less.

Non-instanced in worlds like UO where the mobs were random drop was fine.. but in instances where boss mobs drop a certain items or you need a certain instance mob to complete a quest..give me instance any day. I had enough of EQ1's camping and kill stealing. Waiting 2 weeks to finish one quest because it was constantly camped literally around the clock.

You can't really measure it like that anyway, it depends how big the 90% or 80% of the non-instanced areas are, hearing about how big the 80% is I think it wouldn't matter how much was instanced.

Also I think G&Hs is making use of instanced areas in quite a few different ways, it isn't just instanced dungeons, there's the arena instanced areas and camp instanced areas.

/Agree. If an instance makes sense and is actually useful (drops an item or two you want or need) then Im all for it. If its there simply as a camping area, fuggedaboudit.

By camping area, it will be the place where your minions are housed. Thus the instanced camp. Sorta like a house. And as you would eventually have (possibly) more minions then you could carry in a group (something like 18 maximum different minions), it would give you a place to change to the ones you need/want at that time, so kinda necessary or otherwise ya have tons of minions just milling about eating resources.

The other thing to keep in mind is the fact that we don't use instances for the sake of having them.  We use instances to tell the story.  There are a lot of major events that happen in this game that affect the world and because of that we felt that allowing 1000 people all doing the same quest at the same time (e.g. killing Medusa, or something equally as significant) detracted from the experience.

Thus, we decided to instance areas and quests that would detract from a player's experience otherwise.  You don't have to follow these quests, and you don't have to follow the story.  Heck, you don't even have to go into these instances if you don't want to, but honestly, you'd be missing a significant portion of what we have to offer you.

Just know that the instances are in no way detracting from the non-instanced areas.
