Protect Guard Intercept Question

miccavmiccav Member Posts: 33

A friend and I are fairly new to DAOC. We have a Warrior/Healer duo thing going on. We're having problems with aggro control during healing. Typically in EQ1 (thats what were used to), tanks get a taunt skill and you spam that. From what I'm reading, DAOC has /protect as the taunt. It says that you need to target the groupmate you want to off-load aggro from. So my friend (Lvl 14 Warrior) has made a /protect hotkey. Does he just click me then click /protect one time then that's it? Or are there certain circumstances or something I'm missing. There doesn't seem to be any text in chat or indication that it's active.

I'm also wondering if /guard and /Intercept work the same way (for classes that can use them).

Thanks!

Yes, he just selects you and clicks on Guard or Protect or Intercept.

Guard: He has a chance to block a melee attack against you from the mob.
Intercept: He actually takes the damage that was intended for you from the mob.
Protect: He draws some of the agro that you would have drawn by casting a healing spell or such.

These are all random, meaning they don't go off every single attack. He also has a melee style, level 6 or 15, that adds extra aggro to his attacks and helps keep the mob focused on him instead of running off to pound the healer. If he's using Axes the style is named "Plague", level 6. For Hammer it is called "Provoke" and is level 15. For Swords it is also level 6 and called "Draw Out".

    Hope that helps some. :)

Thanks for the info! Just want to verify, there's no text that comes up in chat that says, "You are protecting soandso" or something similar. Also, does the tank need to do this every time we zone, or just once and we're good for the whole evening?

He should get a message, been a while since I used it though so I could be wrong. However there should definitely be a buff-like icon up in the Effects area that shows he is guarding/protecting/intercepting someone. :)

And you should also be fine across zones if I'm not mistaken, but like I said, it has been a while since I played my Warrior so I could be wrong.

Perfect! I just want to thank Mythic for DAOC. It's brought back the feeling I once had in EQ1 after years of playing the newer MMOGs. DAOC has that special something, I don't know what it is, but it's what a good solid MMOG is about. Since my friends and I left EQ1. We've never been truly happy. I can't believe I've never tried this game before now, and I live about 30 minutes from you guys! Thanks again.

It's like the white stuff in the twinkies.

In fact, it may just be the white stuff in the twinkies.
