I was thinking yesterday that it would be nice to have a place to send
those who are considering playing an SOE game so that they can inform
themselves on what they are getting into.
So I started a blog site called
The Informed Gamerand I want to post a definitive record of what the users of SOE and SWG
in particular have endured, and I am not only talking about gameplay
but also customer service and technical support issues as well.
I
don't like writing pure opinion, I would like to back it up with as
much evidence as possible. Any articles or even customer service
tickets, stories, and what not would be appreciated, it can be posted
here, pm'd, or later when I register an email address for this purpose
I will include it here.
Also if anyone of you would like to contribute to the project please let me know.
SWG RIP

Personally I think people who are so rabidly anti-SOE need to seek serious psychiatric help.

I have had issues with SOE, but only playing Planetside.
I haven't played SWG, I was about to, so I read the forums, and they were all exploding with complaints faster than the mods could delete them. Something about CU
At which point I decided not to.
I played planetside when it first launched, and having come from an Ubisoft game previously, I thought the support and attitude, plus the game quality to be excellent and the server was local. All as it should be for a premium priced game with a subscription free to boot.
Later on I resubscribed, and this had all changed. They wouldn't even bother looking for faults, the server was lagging even though there weren't many players left, and when someone found the fault for them, instead of getting on and fixing it (buy making one phonecall to their ISP), they started blaming everyone esle and saying there was nothing they could do. 10 days of my subscription was wasted by lag. I don't mind subscribing to play on a decent server and to get 24/7 tech support, but when I am still paying to play on a laggy server with no support I become very angry indeed.
Then they added BFR's, and the beautiful balance that had always been the high point of my praises was blown, and all they were left with was a tired old game with poor support, few players and deteriorating gameplay. All for, you guessed it a greatly unreasonable premium priced subscription fee.
Then of course, I read about how Smegley is sending thousands of doughnuts to his mates, and I realise why it costs so much to provide so little.
I still can't help feeling that Sony's Station Pass is a rather good thing. Even after all that.
The only thing you really need to know when buying an SOE game is that for them, it's ALL about the money. they produce some top rate games - they break new ground time and time again (EQ was the first major 3D MMO, SWG was hailed as the game Star Wars fans had been waiting for for decades, Planetside was the first real MMOFPS by... still counting) but...
they'll be rushed to completion with only half-assed beta testing (having played in a couple of SOE betas the 'public beta' is essentially a publicity tool, they don't actually fix much then). they pander to the majority - or the vocal minority, ignore any bug or issue which effects less than about 5% of the player base (hacks and exploits included). they strip the dev team down to nothing after the first few months and employ too few and often inept CSRs who have little actual power. After the first six months if it doesn't add a bulet point to the box or an article on Gamespot, it just won't happen. I'm not saying the staff they have don't do their best... but it's all about minimum outlay for maximum return. YES, that's what running a business is but it's still farly short-sighted. WoW is a perfect example of how profitable taking care of your players can be (just not, in my opinion, a very good game ).
Hey, i'm still playing. PS is a great game. I still /report and /bug when appropriate (that latter at least doesn't get used much nowadays), just not with any particular expectation of a response. By all means, buy an SOE game. just know the score.
Also, Cumbom:
You're a welcher. don't use that stupid form flame, please. Last i checked (five mins ago)... well golly, the SWG forum IS a seething mass of anti-SOE vitriol! i'd much rather this forum DIDN'T degenerate into the same thing. i played SWG for quite a while, through both 'revisions', so i know why you're frustrated, but as i mentioned above i still like PS, and i think others will too. I'd rather any curious wanderer happening across this sleepy little board wasn't scared off by fifteen big flaming 'SOE ARE EVIL' threads.
It's not funny, it's not clever, and it WILL break if you play with it.

Planetside isnt too bad in terms of gripes - Its obviously neglected but its more a case of people are too tight fisted to pay for an mmofps and a bad business model than anyones bad decision.
I had a major problem with the SOE TSRs recently - I couldnt connect to the update servers and couldnt play for a week and not a single TSR I spoke to knew what was going on and spammed me with bollocks like 'check your firewall'. Turns out a node was down between me (& the whole north of england lol) and SOE and the TSRs decided to 'investigate it' the day it was fixed - much use that is rofl. It was a bit uncomfortable because I also couldnt log in to the account section where you can cancel your sub :P If you wanna look that up the ISP is UKOnline and there are about a dozen forum posts in the EQ2 technical support section mentioning the problem and ISP by name - none of them have a reply til the last one on the day it was fixed.

Note: PlayNC will refuse to allow you access to your account if you forget your password and can't provide a scanned image of the product key for the first product you purchased..... LOL
heh. took me nearly an hour to figure out how to unsub from SWG - Doesn't help that the official FAQ sends you in completely the wrong direction. if they could do the same thing for every player all at once, o'l Smed might do it himself...

Well PS has a part time production team, because it saves money, so not much gets done, the latest WASP adition was a Mossie with AA, pointless, unbalanced, silly.
SOE don't come up with good ideas, the creators who get sucked in with promises of good money do.
Anyways PS has so many problems now mainly due to SOE Devs that I give up.
To the man saying this isn't a SOE hate game, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? 300 main long-term players on Werner, me being one, threatening to un-sub due to hacking issues *STILL* unresolved...the game is fun, but SOE screwed it up.

To unsub you log into the patcher, hit account and hit cancel.
It's just that simple.
