When D&L goes live in a few days, you'll see DDO's numbers dwindle to the point of extinction... And D&L will be released 70% complete...

D&L? I appreciate what they're trying to do, but if anyone thinks that game is going to steal people away from existing MMO's like DDO in large numbers...oh, soooo wrong.

I saw D&L at E3 and was part of a two-person team that interviewed the devs. D&L is too complicated, too huge, too...everything that's not remotely popular in MMOs these days. I'd love to see them succeed, but to think that DDO's population will dwindle as a result of D&L is seriously deluded. ::::12::

The article from our visit to D&L at E3 is here if anyone's interested. And I covered a bit about it in a recent blog, too.

I agree with both your last two posts...  It is all conjecture on the DDO population.  Thoes who dislike the game will tend to lean towards the low population figures and those who like DDO will tend to look towarsd the high population figures.  And the only ones who know the real population figures are not talking.  For what ever reason.

And I am not sure D&L will steal players from DDO.  That is something that no one will really ever know.  Even if the DDO population falls off big time, it may or may not be because of D&L.

The only other thing I would say is this...  Reading your Sig...  Are you not a little biased toward Turbine and DDO/LotRO?

You'd think so, yeah. And thanks for noticing. ::::20::

But seriously, I pride myself in being UNbiased. If you read a few of my editorials on the DDO site, you'll see that I can be objective (even critical) about the game. That's my job--to call 'em like I see 'em. Evidence here, and here, and here. Ten Ton Hammer is a network of community/news sites, not necessarily "fan" sites.

I'm not biased against D&L, either, though. I have no reason not to like the game. The devs I met were great, and very enthusiastic about the title. After seeing it, though, I just don't share their enthusiasm. I hope I'm wrong about it, because I'd love to see the game succeed. I just have a feeling it won't; at least not in North America.

I am glad to see it...  I use a few different Ten Ton hammer pages.  I think they have very good info on the games I play.

As far as D&L...  I have never followed it and never really looked into the game...  But I was so looking forward to DDO.  And so dissapointed in it.  I really hope it survives, but I have serious doubts that it will.

Strange thing Shayalyn but I may be one of the ppl that D&L steals away from DDO.  I paid for a pioneer account (yes I am a moron) and will definitely activate my account after it has been out for a month or so.  If the game is any good, i.e. lives up to half the expectations that it promises, then I may well stay.

With regards all the subscriber nonsense previously discussed in this thread, perhaps people do not realise that DDO has done more to bring mature PnP players into online gaming than any other recent game (accepting that EQ and DAoC etc  would have brought online those already interested in MMOs).  The sad thing is that I introduced two ex-PnP friends of mine to DDO as a first experience of online gaming, one has "completed" DDO by getting his character to the cap and the other is struggling to get groups.

The numbers are really starting to dwindle if you look at the anecdotal evidence on the last page of the Server Population Count thread on the DDO forums.

    http://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19540&page=11

Post #215 has a large sampling of numbers across many times and servers, and includes the Memorial Day weekend.  The server population in this sampling never gets above 810, and generally hovers around 450 - 500.

Bruce's numbers are always the best he can do based on the information he's given by the vendors.  But in this case his "confidential source close to the game" has to be either a dreamer or plant.  There's no way DDO has a 90K subscriber base.

Maybe they did at one time close to launch, but not now.

Interestingly, if you choose assume the 90K number is accurate, then according to the Market Share graph that number gives DDO 0.7% of the MMO marketshare.  ToonTown Online has 0.8%.

Wow... I'm really surprised that it has 90k subscribers already... that's pretty impressive.  Whether those subscriptions survive or we see a sudden drop (like AC2 had) is yet to be seen, however.  I'll be interested to see future updates by SirBruce to see how it trends out over time.

But for Turbine that's a huge pluss.... IF they can keep those numbers up they will be able to pay off DDO fairly quickly.

I could believe that there are 90k Subscribers.  What EVERYONE forgets is that there is an anonymous button so that you can stop people from seeing you.  From my experience at least HALF of the players are anonymous.

Earlier you were saying there were probably around 40k subscribers based on in game characters...well guess what?  Times that by 2 for anonymous ones and you get pretty close to 90k.

I never said any such thing :)  I said that, based on box sales, and based on how many people responded to polls that it wasn't worth subscribing to that it was probably between 40-60k.  So I was off a bit because the polls obviously aren't as accurate as they would be if I had insider numbers but guessing at 40-60k and seeing 90k is certainly not THAT far off, statistically when we're talking about making an educated guess based on only 1 factual number :)

... then again his numbers are from March.  We have yet to see what the numbers are now, in April/May/June.... They could be significantly different.  Like I said... I will be interested to see how it trends out, and to see what the numbers are NOW :)  I suspect they've come down.  But I honestly don't know.

also 50,000 people is still pretty successful for a mmo.

Did not. Man... over 300,000 after a year or so.

theres no way this game has 90k any more. i doubt it has even half of that. they will be needing to release alot more content and faster to even think of retaining 40k subs. oh well. think they realize what this game has become and already shoved it over on the backburner. they best hope lotr will bring in the needed numbers to bring them out of this mess. i personally hope lotr will be good, i will sub to it if it is. would be awsome if they can pull it off
