Let's all talk about the word "Potential"

DabbleDabble Member Posts: 1,043

There have been a lot of posts with this word in them.

I have one question:

Shouldn't that be a word used in the Games in Development forums? I mean, when a game is initially announced we can all say, for example, "Wow, that LOTRO sure looks like it has potential."

But people who praise this title use the word as it's main feature. If potential is the best thing about a released game, isn't that a problem?

And if you agree that is all it has right now, why try and convince people to buy it at this time? Because I guarntee you that they will feel much like I did when I tried to play this thing. Angry, aggrevated and cheated.

And that surely won't help your game grow. Rember, it is an mmorpg and it needs many suscribers for it to succed. If you get people to purchase this unfinished game under the premise that it is ready for the masses, you will only be creating more bad word of mouth.

And that can't be good for anyone, can it?

Nice post, and I really mean this.

    But ask yourself a question:
"What's a game that has no longer any potential?"

So even released games should strive to keep potential, to expand, to grow, to become better... Any game that has completely fullfilled it's potential is doomed to go under.

    po·ten·tial
1 : existing in possibility : capable of development into actuality <potential benefits>
2 : expressing possibility; specifically : of, relating to, or constituting a verb phrase expressing possibility, liberty, or power by the use of an auxiliary with the infinitive of the verb (as in "it may rain")

    Hi Ayat,

I realise that English is your second language (nevertheless, your writing ability is better than most native speakers) but I don't think you truly understand the meaning of the word. If you read the above, you will see that potential means "capable of development into actuality."

So then, as applied to the topic we are discussing. this game is capable of development into actuality. Therefore, as it is it isn't actualised. It is in infancy, if you will. Now that would be ok if it were in alpha/beta.

PS Btw, sorry I lashed out at you in all those other posts, but I just felt so victimized and enraged by this game. Now that it is over for me, I've calmed down a bit.

Ok a little joke for you guys concerning potential to loghten the mood (maybe not so politically correct sp please dont take offence anyone)

A son asked his father the difference between potentially and realistically,

his father said "go ask you mum, sister nad brother if thed sleep with tom Cruise for 10 millions dollars".

So the little boy did and returned to the father.

"So what did they say son' the father asked

"They all said yes daddy" replied the wide eyed son

" Ok son so potentially were siting on 30 millions dollars here ok"

" Yes dad " said the son

" but realistically son were living with two whores and a fag"

    DnL is jack of nothing.

But what you said still stands, they should have focused on creating the core MMORPG things before doing the more "fun" stuff

I think we are both right, in a sense:

    http://www.english-test.net/asvab/vocabulary/meanings/030/asvab-words.php#potential
    Meaning of potential (adjective)
forms: potential; more potential; most potential; less potential; least potential
    high possibility

    Example of potential
He had the potential at one time to be the best anyone had ever seen.

    http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=potential
    po·ten·tial (p-tnshl)
    adj.

Capable of being but not yet in existence; latent.

This is what I see and hope for when I look at DnL. And there are more good examples of the meaning of potential that denote how I read/used the word potential.
The difference with words the context it is placed (yes, it might be my Dutch background that hinders me with that) so I hope this clears up the posts I made.

Well i too was quite upset about the state of the game at first(and still am but i refuse to leave until my 2 months are up at least),not so much by the game itself (didnt expect much after SoG and the stress test) but the attitudes of some of the people over on the official forums happy that the game can only get better when quite clearly it must get better.( see my rant somewhere around here).

As for potential YES this game has lots of it, and as posted by Avayat it is however yet to realise it (and probably never will unless some of those reviews will get them moving). There are probably hundreds of man hrs needed by the Devs to fix this to the point that it will attract mainstream MMORPG fans, (and for some the damage is irreversable which is more than understandable).

I think for those around still that have accounts and are undersided the one good thing is the payment options by choosing the freedom plan or whatever its called you have acces to the game you can log in and see how its going but not pay a monthly fee. And as alot of people are still undersided than this is a good thing for them, as i can not really justify paying a monthly fee for a beta type game.

The big question again will it be fixed and when (thats a rhetoric question no need to answer it anyone )

I have a pretty thick skin so ill stick around see how this pans out anyways, if not anything else its fun to look at the forums :D

But the credits cost just the same as the monthly fee so why bother with the credits?
  • jarger22jarger22 Member Posts: 43

Wasnt it somewhere that you had a choice with your free months to get credits instead ?

you still have to buy the "free" credits tho. I dont recall seeing a choice given, wait, unless you mean the email they sent that said you had to register what type of payment plan you want by the 7th otherwise you wouldnt be able to access what you already paid for? Is that it?
  • jarger22jarger22 Member Posts: 43

No that wasnt it i dont think, im sure when they released the subsription info it said there was a choice included in the pioneer offer, you could choose 30 credits, or one month and 15 credits etc.

Ill have to go back and check that out in my old emails, ill be rather displeased if i cant.

"The Dark and Light team would like to thank you for your patience once again,
and offers you an additional month of subscription to Dark and Light, or 15
additional Game Credits in order to begin your journey in Dark and Light.
Thus, every Pioneer Account has either two months of free Dark and Light game
time, or 30 Game Credits to start off in Dark and Light."

there it is in one of the delay notes

ah yes, I recognize that. But alas, as it turns out, we paid $59.99, got an extra month but nothing else and even that extra month is only $15 when we paid an additional $20 so in the end, who got the better deal? It certainly wasnt the Pioneers.

Compared to the settlers, yes... Pioneers drew the short end  of the stick...
