I ignored the attacks on this site.  To be honest, I've seen to many people attack games merely because they weren't "their" game.

After playing DnL for a week, I think I realize that the reason so many here are upset is because "This was going to be YOUR game."  But like a loved one that betrays, the pain of a love lost is greater than anything (sorry for being over-dramatic).

This could have been the next great game.  But it isn't, nor will it ever be.

5+ years and almost zero content.  But I kept hearing that in a few weeks, a few patches it will be the best game on the market.  Sorry, I've been computer gaming since 1978, I'm out of koolaid..

I remember playing games that were text and the entire graphic content was:

[ - _  / L I-- This was the "walls" of the dungeon

0 -- This is you.. the hero

! * + -- Various monsters

$ -- Yeah Loot.. maybe a +1 dagger..

I'm not kidding, and I'm sure some old farts remember those days too.  Sadly those games were far more immersive and had more content than I saw the last week in DnL..

I too am deeply disappointed that a game that might have been great was so badly botched.

You all aren't haters, at least not in my book.

Yay, man. I am playing computer games for 20 years myself, recalling well text adventures I myself typed in from listings from C64 mags, heh. Yeah, those were the days.

I feel quite like you. I didn't want to listen to nay sayers, who I feel often with their aggressive way to express things damage their reputation. It went just the same way for me then you.

How did ya get your money back? When I wrote to C&B they just wrote me to unsubcribe I must write DnL.

Yup have to agree with you. SOO many problems it's just hard to pick a place to start.

After todays patch though, it was wierd. None of my characters could get any exp and mobs were insanely tuff so I created a new character. Also, I changed the engine mode from 6 to 1. I made a half Troll and you wouldn't believe it, no more lag! Of course, there weren't many players near me and the Half Troll town isn't as heavy duty as some of the other beginning towns, but I just played for a couple hours with no lag and got to see a glimpse of what the game could have been or maybe even could be and it's pretty sweet.

I found one balloon that wasn't bugged lol and must say the balloon ride is pretty kewl.

I took this balloon on the left,

To this one in the center.

Definitely if you're going to play this game, use engine mode 1 and you can turn up the graphics to full and it looks really nice. It should still be in beta though so don't pay unless you wanna pay to beta test a game with lots of serious UO type potential.

    Ever played Zork?
I think I enjoyed the whole time I was playing that.
Cannot say the same with D&L though.

Catch what I am meaning there?

Most people feel this way about the game. I used to be a strong supporter and then they decided to release the disaster that is also known as: SoG.

I bought into the information that was up on the stratics site for DnL. I feel bad because I told some people about the potential the game had and they bought a Pioneer pack. I did not purchase the game because I had gotten into SoG and near the end I was able to play the DnL stress test which was the final client minus some patches.

I posted a player review over at gamespot today so some may want to look at that for a real opinion of the game. I was one of the people that wanted this game to make it, but I seriously doubt that any amount of coding can fix a game that has been in development this long. You would hope by now (6 years later?!) things would actually be working properly.

Anyway, I just signed up for this site tonight because I want to rate this game where it should be.

"Zork" was originally MIT hacker jargon for an unfinished program..

Nope.. Can't say that I do.

The first screenshot anarchyart put up is all right, nothing spectacular. The second shot is horrible. This is the groundbreaking landscape they've been talking about? Those hills in the background are pathetic. The lighting is completely hosed, either that, or there's some serious soil erosion taking place in those hills. The city, is that a city or a carnival? isn't anything to gape at. Maybe the rendering distance shouldn't be so far. It looks good close up, but long distance views aren't so hot.

my terrain is better. I made it with Terragen in a matter of 10-20 minutes each.

I've never really cared about graphics..  Yes they are nice to round out a game and help with emersion, but they are way down the list.  Perhaps it is growing up playing those early games like Zork and Wizardy I..

I like to feel like I'm progressing, even if (and better if) it is a challenge.  I play Hardcore on Diablo II, because I do like to have a consequence for bad play (I still feel Diablo II is perhaps the best balance of all gaming factors ever made.. my opinion).

But I don't want to play a game where they give you a pocket knife and tell you to defeat the US Army; then when you fail say you have a bad graphics card.

    I can live without that..

Yeah, no doubt, that's impressive terrain.  But, let's be realistic.  You would need a supercomputer (or perhaps an über gamer machine) to play a game with that level of detail in real time -- and that's without all the other detail (avatars, buildings, mobs, etc.).  Even faking it with good bump mapping would require a high detail level in the game engine to render.  Terragen rendering is for still images, not real-time gameplay.

Zork was first puter game I ever played, did  most of the Infocom ones, also did most of the Scott Adams Adventures all on a Apple II. First dungeon crawl was by some high school kid named Lord British called Akalabeth.  Those were the days 30 bucks for a floppy in a zip lock bag and photocopied sheet of paper for a manual.

Exactly! I never stated that those screenshots are in-game shots or that I have a game that looks like it. I stated that those are terrains I made with terragen. In comparison with NC, they posted a bunch of images and other "facts" and "features" about D&L that "supposedly" are implemented and working but arent really there... and yet they charge you for that. thats the only difference between my shots and theirs - i never deceived anyone that you can play with the detail level of my screens.

Spiffy. I'll have to see if I can find Terragen to screw around with. Though what I really want to screw around with is BigWorld, but to let you use it they want something called "money". Blech.
